DIAGNOSTIC TESTING FOR LYME DISEASE: BEWARE OF FALSE Lyme disease is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted mainly via the tick vector Ixodes pacificus in British Columbia. In the past 40 years I have worked in medical offices, the emergency department, hospital wards, and in medical administration. In each of these settings I have been fortunate to have worked with colleagues whom I’ve valued in many ways. However, when asked what I value most, I needed to do some serious reflection. Studies show that women also have increased rates of burnout compared with male colleagues. The pandemic has had an extra toll on women, making all of this much worse. RE: MANAGING VULNERABLE PATIENTS I was interested to read the April 2021 article, “Management of vulnerable adult patients seeking to leave hospital: Understanding and using relevant legislation,” having had just such a conundrum during my shift the previous evening. Unfortunately, the article did not specifically address a certain common situation. Any insights from the authors would be much appreciated.
