THE HUNTERS LEAN-TO
The Hunters Lean-To. How To Make a "Whelen" Tent. by Steve Smith, 3/5/04 . Early in the twentieth century, Colonel Townsend Whelen, noted hunter and outdoor writer, designed a tent he called the "hunter's lean-to". Colonel Whelen was a minimalist. He desired to be as close to his natural surroundings as was possible. He generally considered anything short of -20 degrees or severe bugs hardly BACKPACKING GEAR WEIGHT CALCULATOR OUTDOOR GEAR WEIGHT CALCULATOR is a tool for calculating total weight of one's backpacking gear. Therefore, constructing bags from the lightest material available is the best way to go to shave ounces (or pounds) off your pack weight while at the same time maintaining a high level of durability. Now, after several years, that coating has become sticky, probably due to some sort of breaking down of the urethane. THE TEN ESSENTIALS + FOUR Backpacking ten essentials: the first ten items in this list are the selections of essential backpacking gear which The Mountaineers refer to as The Ten Essentials and promote as critical and essential items which belong in your backpack as insurance against the unexpected.Although you may not use all the backpacking ten essentials every day, they can be life savers in an emergency. You hafta treat the wilderness like your own home. There's no mammals thats that's gonna harm you. The only threat is on a Micro scale - BUTTER ON THE TRAIL? A packet of Butter Buds, a tablespoon or two of regular (skimmed) powdered milk and the same of flour in about 1/8 to 1/4 cup of water (usually leftover cooking water) make a decent white sauce, and with powdered cheese added, it will turn Ramen noodles into passable Ramenn' cheese.

WEEKEND WINTER HIKING( by John Macri )
WEEKEND WINTER HIKING: Every autumn I lament that many of us start winding down our hiking and get ready for a hibernating winter. In fact, I think I enjoy winter hiking best for many reasons albeit a heavier pack. Is there anything more breath taking than a snow covered mountain vista? Few landscape scenes can match fresh snow on a forest of pine trees. In a nutshell, consider: there are less crowds, Lean-to shelters are usually wide open; no bugs; no bears; no rain; no mud; no leaves to block a view and perhaps most enjoyable - real solitude. So quiet, you actually can hear it. Awe inspiring really. Okay, an obvious question is "Don't you get cold out there?!" Of course the answer is yes but that is not to say we are freezing all day. In fact, while walking, one can get pretty toasty not unlike the other seasons. Rest periods and night time are when you need to pay closer attention to the cold air. It's rather humorous at times because I can run out to the car and swear at ol' man winter yet never seem to get as cold living outdoors for a few days. The following information is mostly on snow gear although winter sage is a must before hitting the snow covered trails. I cannot emphasis this enough - read as much as you can before tackling winterbackpacking.

HIKING WITH CHILDREN ( by Penny Schwyn ) HIKING WITH KIDS:IMPORTANT
This article is not meant to be a substitute for common sense, or a treatise on child care. The purpose is to provide guidelines and suggestions as what has worked successfully for other parents who have ventured into the woods with their kids, before you. Many people have contributed to this, either with direct assistance in editing, or through posts to rec.backcountry. INDEX (_see article for index_) Intro and General Considerations: You have kids, and now your hiking and backpacking life is over, correct? Wrong. While some people decide that taking kids out into the backcountry is going to be too much work, there are many of us that have had wonderful family times with a little altering of how we did it "BC".
