Policy Options: What could governance of lethal autonomous weapons look like? There are a variety of opinions on the best way to mitigate and avoid the risks posed by lethal autonomous weapons to humanity. However, within the community advocating against the development of these weapons systems, there is growing consensus around two keyelements:
THE NEED TO ENSURE MEANINGFUL HUMAN CONTROL IN THE FACE OF The UK’s engagement to date in multilateral discussions on the implications of increased autonomy in weapons systems, facilitated by robotics and AI, is not adequate to the broad societal implications of the subject matter. How HOME - LETHAL AUTONOMOUS WEAPONS There are two key elements central to the global regulation of lethal autonomous weapons. 1. The Positive Obligation of Human Control: The first is a commitment by countries that all weapons systems must operate under meaningful human control.This means that humans, not algorithms, make the decision to kill (i.e. humans “press the button” to use lethal force, not an AI system).RISKS OF LETHAL AWS

Since 2013, when the Group of Governmental Experts on lethal autonomous weapons was established, the primary forum has been the United Nations’ Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) in Geneva.
