The area continued to flourish and draw more settlers, and by 1818, Athens was an incorporated city before Alabama became a state. In 1819, voters made Athens the county seat of Limestone County. Athens Utilities is a department of the City of Athens, Alabama, providing electricity, gas, and water/wastewater services covering 607 square miles that make-up Athens and Limestone County. Since 1906 Athens Utilities has provided power, expanding services as the area has grown from a small rural town to an energetic ATHENS POLICE DEPARTMENT Athens Police Department swore in 7 of 8 recently hired officers. Three just graduated from the Northeast Alabama Police Academy in November and the next five officers will start their academy training this month. Athens PD still has three officer positions left to fill.
