ARTIST SENSE
After maintaining several blogs for many years, I have decided that it is time to streamline my web presence. One blog is easier to maintain than many, and between being a mother to a 16 months old and running a coaching business, something’s got to give (or go); in this case, it is some of my blogs. FINDING YOUR INNER ARTIST, DAY 28: ABOUT SEEING THINGS Today's quote: When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college - that my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared at me, incredulous, and said, "You mean they forget?" ~ Howard Ikemoto Ofcourse
INNER CRITIC
Finding your inner artist, day 13: About toolboxes, hard graft and letting go when it matters. You’ve got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail. ~ Charlie Parker. You need to learn your craft. You need to spend time on honing CREATIVE INSPIRATION VS. IMITATION Creative inspiration vs. imitation – when does copying turn into plagiarism? Most people would probably agree that rarely any of us reinvent the wheel. We are all surrounded by other people and their work, and they will undoubtedly influence our own creative process (otherwise we would have to walk around with blinkers and earplugsconstantly).

STUDYING – PAGE 2 – ARTIST SENSE I had a wonderful music teacher at school. I played instruments before I met her, and I had music teachers before her, but no one had ever made me feel so passionate about singing, or made me believe I could achieve what I wanted to achieve, quite like her. CREATIVE INSPIRATION VS.

FINDING YOUR INNER ARTIST, DAY 17: ABOUT REWARDS, REASONS Today's quote: The reward of art is not fame or success but intoxication. ~ Cyril Connolly I'll be honest with you: Every time a (prospective) student answers the question "Why do you want to sing" with"To be famous!", my heart sinks. TIME TO MOVE…
Posted on July 25, 2016by Petra

After maintaining several blogs for many years, I have decided that it is time to streamline my web presence. One blog is easier to maintain than many, and between being a mother to a 16 months old and running a coaching business, something’s got to give (or go); in this case, it is some of my blogs. However, fret not – the content of this blog has been moved over to my main site http://www.singingsense.com, and I will still write posts related to life and business coaching for artists and creatives. However, since most of my clients are musicians, it seems to be fair enough to integrate these posts into my vocal coaching site. The Artist Sense Blog will still stay online, but there won’t be any new posts on here. Instead, you will find my musings over at http://www.singingsense.com. MY LIFE AND CAREER COACHING SERVICES FOR MUSICIANS, ARTISTS AND CREATIVES ARE STILL AVAILABLE. SO IF THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, PLEASE GET IN TOUCH. I thank you all for following me through the years, and it would be lovely to see you “over there”.Petra

20 THINGS LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO TOLERATE Posted on November 9, 2014by Petra Raspel
Great article well worth thinking about. A little taster: > You don’t have to settle, it’s simply a choice you make every > day. If you feel like you’re running in place there’s a good > chance you’re tolerating things you shouldn’t be. It’s time > to reclaim your life. via 20 Things Life Is Too Short To Tolerate Are you aware of what you have been tolerating for too long? If so, what is it, and how do you intend to work on it? I’d love to hear from you…Petra Raspel 2014

ON SHARING WITHOUT ATTRIBUTION Posted on August 11, 2014by Petra Raspel
A very poignant post by David Newhoff on the pitfalls of “sharing” without crediting the artist: http://illusionofmore.com/photographer-value-exposure/ This is not just an issue for photographers by the way. What’s yourstance?

ON BECOMING STRENGTHS-FOCUSED, WHOLE-HEARTED ARTISTS Posted on March 31, 2014by Petra Raspel
This is a really excellent, informative article by Dr. Noa Kageyama I thought many of you might find interesting. Here a little taster: > Sure, it’s important to obsess over all the particular technical > or musical details which we struggle with. But are we also spending > enough time identifying, nurturing, honing, and maximizing the > things we naturally do best, that come easily to us? Visit his blog The Bulletproof Musician , even if you are not a musician/performer – you will find a wealth of interesting, helpful and entertaining posts. via On Becoming Strengths-Focused, Whole-Hearted Artists.

THE CRIPPLING LIES YOU MAY BE TELLING YOURSELF Posted on May 30, 2013by Petra Raspel
I just found a wonderful blog post by Barrie Davenport and thought I’d share it with you. It is essentially about lying to ourselves, making excuses and blaming the past (and others) for not moving forward with our lives andcareers.
Here’s a quote to get you started: > We say things like . . .>
> * Everything in my life is bad right now. > * I can’t do that or my family would fall apart. > * I’ve tried that before and it never works. > * I can’t live without him (her). > * I’m just not disciplined enough. > * I’m totally overwhelmed. > * I’ll never get out from under this debt. > * There’s no way to change my life. > * I’ll never be able to find a job I love. > * My childhood (divorce, break-up, job loss) has wounded me> forever.
