THE QUEST FOR BLUE
The Egyptian name for the blue they used transliterates phonetically as hsbd iryt, which means “artificial lapis lazuli.”The name reflected the high regard for the semiprecious gemstone that, together with cobalt, azurite, turquoise and indigo, was one of several sources of blue-hued raw materials Egyptian craftsmen used in pigments, amulets, beads, jewelry, scarabs, statuary and textiles. FLAVORS: LAMB AND EGYPTIAN RICE WITH CINNAMON, NUTMEG AND Yogurt dip, to serve. If using frozen fava beans, boil them in water for 25 minutes and drain. Heat the oil in a pan, add the ground lamb and cook for 5 minutes to brown. Add the salt, pepper and rice; stir to combine. Add the cinnamon and nutmeg and stir again. Add the water, bring to a boil and add the frozen peas or cooked fava beans. THE STORY OF DHAKA MUSLIN The story of muslin is one of contrasts and opposites: of artistry and murder, of splendor and penury, of loss and memory. By the 17th century, Bengali muslin was associated with the power and elegance of the Mughal court in India, as shown in this 1665 depiction of SAUDI ARAMCO WORLD : RECIPES: FOR STARTERS 60 milliliters (2½ oz., 4 tbs.) olive oil. salt. 1 romaine lettuce (optional) Wash the burghul and squeeze out the water. SAUDI ARAMCO WORLD : SEVEN WELLS OF DAMMAM In the middle 1930's the pattern was vividly acted out in the desert of eastern Saudi Arabia a few thousand yards from the Persian Gulf. There American wildcatters drilled six wells and were nearly withdrawn from what appeared to be a costly failure before their historic well—Dammam No. 7—struck oil in commercial volume. SAUDI ARAMCO WORLD : THE BEAUTY OF BEDOUIN JEWELRY My conclusion is that Islam introduced the beauty of Bedouin jewelry to Spain sometime during the 800 years of Islamic rule there (See Aramco World, September- October 1976), and that the Spanish conquistadors then carried the artistic themes - and materials - to Mexico, Central America and the southwestern regions of the UnitedStates.
