REFLECTIONS ON 2020 AS AN INDEPENDENT RESEARCHER Reflections on 2020 as an independent researcher. 2020 was my second year as an “independent researcher.”. I’m grateful for the freedom that strange job title entails, but it’s certainly not well-defined. I’ve needed to grope around in the dark for patterns and structures which pre-existing institutions and roles wouldordinarily provide.
WHY BOOKS DONʼT WORK In this section we’ve seen that, like lectures, non-fiction books don’t work because they lack a functioning cognitive model. Instead, like lectures, they’re (accidentally, invisibly) built on a faulty idea about how people learn: transmissionism.ANDY MATUSCHAK

HOW TO WRITE GOOD PROMPTS: USING SPACED REPETITION TO Piotr Wozniak, a pioneer of spaced repetition, has been developing a system he calls incremental reading which attempts to actively support this kind of iterative, incremental prompt writing. If you notice a feeling of duty or completionism, remind yourself that you can always write more prompts later. EVERGREEN NOTE TITLES ARE LIKE APIS Evergreen note titles are like APIs. When Evergreen notes are factored and titled well, those titles become an abstraction for the note itself. The entire note’s ideas can then be referenced using that handle (see Concept handles, after Alexander). In fact, this property itself functions as a kind of litmus: as you develops ideas in notes over time and improve the “APIs,” you’ll be able KNOWLEDGE WORK SHOULD ACCRETE Knowledge work should accrete. ABOUT THESE NOTES
Evergreen note-writing as fundamental unit of knowledge work. If you had to set one metric to use as a leading indicator for yourself as a knowledge worker, the best I know might be the number of Evergreen notes written per day. Note-writing can be a virtuosic skill, but Most people use notes as a bucket for storage or scratch thoughts and Note-writing practices are generally ineffective. PREFER ASSOCIATIVE ONTOLOGIES TO HIERARCHICAL TAXONOMIES Prefer associative ontologies to hierarchical taxonomies. Let structure emerge organically. When it’s imposed from the start, you prematurely constrain what may emerge and artificially compress the nuanced relationships between ideas. Reading and note-writing. Write about what you read to internalize texts deeply. Evergreen note-writing helps reading efforts accumulate. Collecting material feels more useful than it usually is. Do your own thinking. Understanding requires effortful engagement. COGNITIVE SCAFFOLDING Cognitive scaffolding. When thinking or doing something new and challenging, one common failure mode is that the smallest possible incremental step might still be too difficult to conceive. In these instances, it’s best to adopt an environment which will erect cognitive scaffolding to support part of the cognitive load, enablingthat next step.

This is an unusual way to think about writing notes: Most people take only transient notes. That’s because these practices aren’t about writing notes; they’re about effectively developing insight: “Better note-taking” misses the point; what matters is “better KNOWLEDGE WORK SHOULD ACCRETE Knowledge work should accrete. ANDY MATUSCHAKSCRYING PEN A PEN WHICH DRAWS ITS OWN FUTURE USING A REALTIME RECURRENT NEURAL NETWORK Hi! I’m a software engineer, designer, and researcher. I work on technologies that expand what people can think and do. My methods meander between academia and Silicon Valley: I explore theories by expressing them in real-world systems, which produce insights I use to improve the theories, which I use in turn to improve the systems, andso on.

MY MORNING WRITING PRACTICE My morning writing practice. After the pre-desk elements of My daily routine, I begin my first serious creative work of the day: at least two hours writing and revising Evergreen notes. This is typically the most challenging work I do all day, so I like to do it when I have the most clarity and focus.ABOUT THESE NOTES
About these notes. Hi! I’m Andy Matuschak. You’ve stumbled upon my working notes. They’re kind of strange, so some context might help. These notes are mostly written for myself: they’re roughly my thinking environment (Evergreen notes; My morning writing practice). But I’m sharing them publicly as an experiment (Work with the garage door up).ANDY MATUSCHAK

TAXONOMY OF NOTE TYPES Taxonomy of note types::TODO: flesh this out; write a note for each note type; etc:: For me, the practice of writing and revising notes is, at its core, about trying to move up the following rough ladder: DO YOUR OWN THINKING Do your own thinking. Beware: it’s too easy to let others’ schema and ideas dominate your own. When reading, the default is to let the author do your thinking for you. PEAK - ERICSSON AND POOL - ANDY MATUSCHAK Peak - Ericsson and Pool. Ericsson, A., & Pool, R. (2016). Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise (1 edition). Eamon Dolan/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. NOTE-WRITING SYSTEMS Note-writing systems. Principles: Evergreen note-writing as fundamental unit of knowledge work “Better note-taking” misses the point; what matters is “better thinking”MNEMONIC MEDIUM
Mnemonic medium. The mnemonic medium embeds a Spaced repetition memory system within narrative prose. Spaced repetition memory systems make memory a choice, but they’ve suffered significant barriers to adoption. The mnemonic medium is designed to solve many of theseproblems.
EVERGREEN NOTE-WRITING AS FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF KNOWLEDGE WORK Evergreen note-writing as fundamental unit of knowledge work. WORK WITH THE GARAGE DOOR UP Work with the garage door up. One of my favorite ways that creative people communicate is by “working with their garage door up,” to riff on a passage from Robin Sloan (below). ENABLING ENVIRONMENTS, GAMES, AND THE PRIMER Enabling environments, games, and the Primer. Rather than focusing on the Primer, I’m finding a more powerful framing to be in centering the essay around scaling high-growth environments. EVERGREEN NOTES SHOULD BE DENSELY LINKED Evergreen notes should be densely linked. If we push ourselves to add lots of links between our notes, that makes us think expansively about what other concepts might be related to what we’re thinking about.ANDY MATUSCHAK
