If it is to accommodate people hiking through the mountains, then a) the worst place for hikers to cross would be at an intersection where there are vehicles coming from multiple directions, and b) the sidewalk leads to a metal railing next to a rock-face - a dead-end.NARROW STREETS

THE SCAR OF MODERNITY In In Scar of Modern Urban Planning I covered the disconnect between 'progress' and actually making something 'better'. Some of the traits I associate with good urbanism are; human-scaled streets, granularity in land uses and ownership, the ability to incubate something from nothing, and traditional architecture.I am someone who advocates for traditional urbanism and building more of this; HOW TO FIGHT THOSE "BOXY BUILDINGS" Land is the most important asset of a city. Historically, the United States only allowed those who owned significant parcels of land to vote and not too long ago, owning land made you part of the gentry class.Still today, those who own the land benefit from the economic prosperity through rising land values and rising rents. A TRADITIONAL CITY PRIMER As you read my blog, you will often see me talk about and promote the Traditional City.This post will be an introductory to the Traditional City for those that are not familiar with it. I have been called a quack - criticised for promoting the Traditional City as a cure-all for many of today's urban ailments (declining small businesses, obesity, social mobility and equality, reducing our cost LESSONS FROM THE STREETS OF TOKYO I have criticized this approach before in my article on Complete Streets, because under this framework of giving every mode of transportation its own dedicated space (wide sidewalks, bike lanes, parking, car lanes, bus lanes, benches, etc.), the result is what I call a "fat street"; a very wide (and expensive to build and maintain) street that tries to do too much. WAYFINDING IN THE TOKYO SUBWAY SYSTEM For example, along the S line, the stations were numbered in linear order, such as S01, S02, S03, S04, etc. They also had names, but, as a foreigner visiting the city, it was easier to memorize where I wanted to go by a letter and number rather than a Japanese word I struggledto pronounce.
LET'S BUILD A VILLAGE FROM A PARKING LOT Eureka Springs is great. It is surrounded by ugly sprawl, but in downtown Eureka Springs, the streets are not too out of proportion (still slightly on the wide side and giving too much priority to cars, but better than most American stuff), the development pattern is fined-grained, and there are aWHAT IS 'COMPLETE'?
The idea of a Complete Street as one that accommodates everyone is the definition given by Smart Growth America. I understand the reasoning behind this, as much of what Smart Growth America Complete Streets campaign tries to do is to convince residents and developers living in a totally car-oriented environment that by not accommodating people walking around, they are not BUILDING DENSE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE DENSE This post was actually a comment I wrote on the Strong Town's article A Case For Height Restrictions.The comments broke into a discussion over density, building heights, property values, and the issue of people holding onto vacant lots.Subscribe Today! x
