SOME THOUGHTS ON CUISINE AND CULTURE Cuisine as a metaphor for culture. There you go, the thought of the day. Mileage varies a lot, but here’s a hint as far as I’m concerned: don’t try to sell me chả giò (fried rolls) made with egg roll wrappers (chả giò should be made with rice paper). Egg roll wrappers are for Chinese or other Asian cuisines; the onlyVietnamese
IMMERSION - ALIETTE DE BODARD Immersion. A Xuya universe story. In the morning, you’re no longer quite sure who you are. You stand in front of the mirror—it shifts and trembles, reflecting only what you want to see—eyes that feel too wide, skin that feels too pale, an odd, distant smell wafting from the compartment’s ambient system that is neither incense nor garlic THE TEA MASTER AND THE DETECTIVE The Tea Master and the Detective. A major space opera book set in the Hugo-award nominated series The Universe of Xuya, winner of the Nebula Award and finalist for the Hugo and Locus Awards. In a galactic empire inspired by Vietnamese culture, a detective and a mindship must team up to solve a mystery. Very loosely inspired by A Study in DOMINION OF THE FALLEN A superb murder mystery, on an epic scale, set against the fall out – literally – of a war in Heaven. Paris has survived the Great Houses War – just. Its streets are lined with haunted ruins, Notre-Dame is a burnt-out shell, and the Seine runs black with ashes and rubble. Yet life continues among the wreckage. BUCKWHEAT APPLE CRUMBLE Mix the buckwheat flour, the regular flour and the sugar. Slowly rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs (you might need to adjust flour quantity if the mixture is too wet). Pour over the apples until you have a thick crust. Put in oven, 180°C, for 20 minutes, until the crust is golden. Serve warm.3.2.1303.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF ASIANS Reposted from my twitter feed because I think it’s worth saying: The physical description of your Asian characters to easily ID them as Asian is not the first thing you should be obsessing about. Basically, this is the most Othering version of describing characters of colour–they’re just like white people, except with different physical features! But CA NUONG HANH MO (GRILLED SALMON WITH SCALLION-INFUSED OIL Pre-heat oven to 200°C. Crush the peanuts in a mortar. Cut the onion and the white part of the scallions into thin parts. CULTURAL APPROPRIATION This is NOT a tiny minority. I’m not saying it’s a 99.99% of fiction either, but cultural appropriation is not a negligible or insubstantial phenomenon. A significant amount of fiction out there makes me doubt much thoughtful research (or much research at all!) was involved. To take just one example: the last few stories set in ChinaI have

A Xuya universe story. You never liked your sister. I know you tried your best; that you would stay awake at night thinking on filial piety and family duty; praying to your ancestors and the bodhisattva Quan Am to find strength; but that it would always come back to that core of dark thoughts within you, that fundamental fright you carried with you like a yin shadow in your heart. SOME THOUGHTS ON CUISINE AND CULTURE So, I’m still perusing Irene Kuo’s Key to Chinese Cooking, and along the way I happened on a chapter that talked about Asian noodles, and how you could basically substitute spaghetti for Chinese egg noodles.Which struck me as odd because they don’t taste anything alike, but see, the book was written in the Seventies, and back then, finding genuine egg noodles in the middle of the US PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF ASIANS Reposted from my twitter feed because I think it’s worth saying: The physical description of your Asian characters to easily ID them as Asian is not the first thing you should be obsessing about.
