Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Sassi Neri Skarn (Pargasite-Skarn) Skarn is an old Swedish mining term originally used to describe a type of silicate gangue, or waste rock, associated with iron-ore bearing sulfide deposits apparently replacing Palaeoproterozoic age ALEX STREKEISEN-KOMATIITES- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Komatiites Komatiites are fascinating volcanic rocks. They are among the most ancient lavas of the Earth following the 3.8 Ga pillow basalts at Isua and they represent some of the oldest ultramafic magmatic rocks preserved in the Earth’s crust at 3.5 Ga. ALEX STREKEISEN-POIKILITIC- Poikilitic texture. Poikilitic texture refers to crystals, typically phenocrysts, in an igneous rock which contain small grains of other minerals. In igneous rocks Poikilitic texture is widely used to determine order of crystallization; if one mineral is enclosed by another then the enclosed grain must have been the first tocrystallize.

They include: camptonite, monchiquite, sannaite, fourchite and other rare rocks. ALEX STREKEISEN-ZOISITE- Zoisite, first known as saualpite, after its type locality, isa sorosilicate belonging to the epidote group of minerals. Named after Sigmund Zois, Baron von Edelstein (1747-1819), Austrian scholar who financed mineral-collecting expeditions. Ionic substitution in zoisite is very limited; Al 3+ may be replaced by Fe 3+ ore Cr 3+ and lesser ALEX STREKEISEN-SAUSSURITE- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Saussurite Saussurite, named after the Swiss explorer Horace Benedict de Saussure, who discovered it on the slopes of Mont Blanc is a mineral aggregate which is formed as a hydrothermal alteration product of plagioclase feldspar(saussuritization).
ALEX STREKEISEN-PANTELLERITIC IGNIMBRITE- Pantelleritic ignimbrite. Pantellerite is a peralkaline rhyolite. It has a higher iron and lower aluminium composition than comendite. It is named after Pantelleria, a volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily and the type location for this rock. On Pantelleria the rock is usually found as a vitrophyre containing phenocrysts of anorthoclaseor

Olivine gabbro Gabbro: A coarse-grained plutonic rock composed essentially of calcic plagioclase, pyroxene and iron oxides. The term gabbro was used originally by Italian geologist Tozzetti in 1768 and brought into geological terminology by a German geologist Leopold von Buch. ALEX STREKEISEN-BLUESCHIST- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Blueschist Blueschist is a regional metamorphic rock formed under high-pressure (HP) low-temperature (LT) conditions. It is formed in the subduction zone environment with low geothermal gradients (4-14°C km-1) and is characterized by the presence of HP/LT index minerals like glaucophane, lawsonite, aragonite, jadeite, and deerite (Fig.1). ALEX STREKEISEN-LITHIC ARENITES- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Lithic Arenites Lithic sandstones, or lithic arenites, or litharenites, are sandstones with a significant (>5%) component of lithic fragments, though quartz and feldspar are usually present as well, along with some clayey matrix. ALEX STREKEISEN-CHLORITE SCHIST- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. chlorite schist The word schist is derived from the Greek word schízein meaning "to split", which is a reference to the ease with which schists can be split along the plane in which the platy minerals lie. S-C fabric. S-C fabric is a metamorphic fabric formed by the intersection of shear surfaces within rocks affected by dynamic metamorphism. The foliation that develops in a shear zone is usually thought to trace the XY-plane of the strain ellipsoid. The sense of rotation of the foliation from the margin into the shear zone isgenerally a safe

External shell (Fig.1) may be divided in two parts: • Spire: the pointed end of the shell. From the apex of the spire, one can count the number of complete whorls and each of them is joined to the next along a suture. The angle formed by the point of the spire, or the spiral angle, is important in identification. ALEX STREKEISEN-BOWLINGITE- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Bowlingite - Ca 0,25 (Mg,Fe) 3 ((Si,Al) 4 O 10)(OH) 2 * nH 2 O Bowlingite is an obsolete name for saponite (from Latin, "sap" = soap, alluding to its greasy or soapy feel and appearance). ALEX STREKEISEN-LAWSONITE- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Lawsonite - CaAl 2 Si 2 O 7 (OH) 2 *(H 2 O) Named in 1895 in honor of geologist Andrew Cowper Lawson, geologist with the Canadian Geological Survey and for most of his career a professor of geology and mineralogy at the University of California. ALEX STREKEISEN-GRANOPHYRIC TEXTURE- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Granophyric Texture A granophyric texture is an intergrowth of quartz and alkali feldspar in an igneous rock that is less well defined than a graphic texture and often is somewhat radiating. ALEX STREKEISEN-EPIDOTE- The Epidote structure consists of octahedral AlO6 groups sharing edges to form continuous chain parallel to b axis. In one-third of the octahedral groups, Al 3+ is surrounded by four O 2- and two (OH) -. The octahedral chains are linked by silicon, in SiO 4 and SiO 7 ALEX STREKEISEN-POIKILITIC- Poikilitic texture.
ALEX STREKEISEN-PERTHITE- Perthite. Named for the nearby city of Perth in Ontario. The type locality is 9.5 km southwest of Perth. A perthite is an intimate intergrowth of sodic and potassic feldspar resulting from subsolidus exsolution (unmixing of two minerals). Strictly speaking a perthite has blebs or irregular lamellae of sodic feldspar within potassicalkali

ALEX STREKEISEN-SKELETAL- Skeletal texture. Skeletal crystals are incomplete, polyhedral single crystals with internal cavities that are commonly crystallographically controlled. In skeletal crystals in igneous rocks, the cavities are filled with glass or crystalline groundmass material. ALEX STREKEISEN-ANORTHOSITE- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Anorthosite Anorthosite: Anorthosite: A leucocratic coarse-grained plutonic rock consisting essentially of plagioclase (usually labradorite or bytownite) often with small amounts of pyroxene. ALEX STREKEISEN-SAUSSURITE- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Saussurite Saussurite, named after the Swiss explorer Horace Benedict de Saussure, who discovered it on the slopes of Mont Blanc is a mineral aggregate which is formed as a hydrothermal alteration product of plagioclase feldspar(saussuritization).
ALEX STREKEISEN-ACTINOLITE- Alex Strekeisen - I vetrini della mia fantasia. Actinolite - Ca 2 (Mg,Fe 2+) 5 (OH,F) 2 Named in 1794 by Richard Kirwan from the Greek "aktina" for "ray" and "lithos" for "stone" in allusion to the fibrous nature of the original specimens. ALEX STREKEISEN-GLOMEROPHYRIC- Glomerophyric texture. Glomeroporphyritic or glomerophyric is a term used to describe a porpyritic texture in which phenocrysts are clustered into aggregates called glomerocrysts or crystal clots. Glomeroporphyritic textures are common and often included plagioclase and pyroxenes in basic rocks. They form by a processes known assynneusis
ALEX STREKEISEN-BOOKSHELF SLIDING- Bookshelf sliding. Some porphyroclastic minerals, such as mica and feldspar, tend to shear on discrete fractures or crystallographic planes to accommodate ductile deformation in the surrounding matrix. The individual crystal fragments may be rotated in the direction of shear like a collapsing set of books, hence the term "bookshelfsliding".
