This study examined the association between secondhand smoking and depressive symptoms among never smoking adolescents aged 12–15 years from 22 low- and middle-income countries. Of 37,505 adolescents, depressive symptoms prevalence increased from 23.0% in adolescents without secondhand smoking to 28.9% in those with daily past week secondhand smoking. A country-wise analysis showed that secondhand smoking on 3 or more days in the past week was associated with a 1.48-fold increase in the odds of depressive symptoms. An analysis of the Scottish Longitudinal Study data revealed that adults who live in high-crime areas have elevated risk of antidepressant and antipsychotic medication, but not anxiolytic medication. Crime was positively associated with antidepressants among adults aged 24–53 years, with stronger associations in women, and with antipsychotics among men aged 44–53 years. Increased risk of medications were found in skilled workers and people from lower non-manual occupations living in high-crime areas. In response to increased opioid-related overdoses, Florida implemented pain clinic laws and operationalized its Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. This study analyzed the effect of these policies on emergency department (ED) visits and inpatient stays for opioid-related overdoses and found that Florida’s polices were associated with a level reduction of 2.31 per 100,000 and a reduction in the trend of 0.16 per 100,000 population each quarter. During the study period of 2008–2015, the policies were associated with a total reduction of 13,532 inpatient stays and ED visits for prescription opioid-relatedoverdoses.
This study examined the effect of violence victimization on substance use disparities by gender nonconformity. Among male students, all categories of violence victimization were more prevalent among gender-nonconforming students. After controlling for violence victimization, statistically significant substance use disparities remained for cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and injection drug use in gender-nonconforming male students. Among female students, only being threatened/injured with a weapon was significantly associated with gender nonconformity, and no substance use disparities were found by gender nonconformity.Details
