The original and unique Museum of Herbs The Herbal and Wellness tour through the Centuries celebrates the therapeutic power of herbs and passes on the age-old story of the relationship between humans and plants. Visitors pass through rooms of precious herbals, books of herbal medicines, ancient mortars, pottery and glassware, accompanied by the perfume of the medicinal plants.ABOCA MUSEUM
The herbs gathering process is preceded by a daily observation of the seedlings’ growth stage.The aim is that of identifying and culling the most perfect specimens, those being the ones with the best medicinal properties. The “balsamic time”, that is, the right growth stage, is generally reached at blossom time.Nevertheless, a further ripening stage may be needed in order to gatherABOCA MUSEUM
In the first room of the museum, extremely precious examples of ancient mortars are exhibited, the apothecary’s main tool of work. Over the centuries, different materials have been used to make it: alabaster, hard stone, marble, iron, silver, copper, wood, terracotta, ceramics and glass.But bronze is the alloy that embodied the ideal material for the apothecary: resistant, cohesive, nonABOCA MUSEUM
From there the historical-philosophical programme begins, with introductory panels examining the origin of the age-old relationship between humans and medicinal plants in prehistory, those very plants that fill the ancient mortars at the entrance and in various parts of the museum. The sinuosity and brightness of the finds in this room come from the material in which they are made.. Blown glass, gleaming and malleable, has always been used to make pharmacy equipment, including numerous tools for the laboratory. In this room there are objects such as retorts and phials, distillation tools, but also singular specimens that are far from being purely pharmaceuticalABOCA MUSEUM
Stand at the centre bench, where the apothecary wrote and prepared medicines using the practical wooden removable support. The three walls that surround you are those of an authentic 19 th century pharmacy, rebuilt with pine furniture and furnishings.. Inside the cabinets, the medicines are carefully stored in medicine containers of the period: a chromatic succession of boxes, containersABOCA MUSEUM
"Cave atra venena, beware deadly poison!" Reads the golden inscription on the frame of the glass cabinet. In this small isolated room, the pharmacist kept under lock and key the toxic products that in the wrong hands could cause harm.. Thanks to his ability to accurately dose even the most potent of poisons, only he could create effective medicines. The symbols of death discourage even theABOCA MUSEUM
The oldest known weighing scale dates back to 3000 B.C. The basic structure of this weighing instrument, with pans and a beam held up by rope, remain unchanged until 33 B.C. when the Romans introduced a completely metal version. The Museum's latest ambitious project is that of collecting herb and flower catalogues that describe medicinal plants from other continents, in order to obtain a rich documentation to be used for botanical, historical and scientific comparison.
