A massive rescue, relief, and recovery effort began in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Recovery operations lasted for nine months at Ground Zero, ending on May 30, 2002. In Manhattan, the Battery Parking Garage, which hosts the annual Tribute in Light installation, is a convenient, nearby parking option. Her flight out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport had been canceled twice due to weather. She told herself if the third flight was canceled, she would abandon her plans and go in the morning.
