Individual Teams are represented by icons on the map. SLED DOGS | YUKON QUEST The Yukon Quest is powered by sled dogs. These incredible canine athletes are the heart and soul of this great race. Their ancestors made it possible for nineteenth century society to establish itself in the far North well over 100 years ago and eventually create the modern northern world we enjoy today. Excellence in sled dog care is one of the founding principles of the Yukon Quest. YUKON QUEST SANCTIONED QUALIFYING RACES For Mushers Interested in Running the 2020 Yukon Quest Mushers must have demonstrated ability to complete a long distance sled dog race. Rookie mushers must complete a 300 mile YQI sanctioned race and one other YQI sanctioned race of at least 200 miles (500 miles minimum). Qualifying races must be completed within 42 months of the start of the Yukon Quest race. ARMCHAIR MUSHER: CHECKPOINTS Armchair Musher: Checkpoints. February 09, 2020. The basic layout of the race is fairly linear to the eye—the checkpoints establish the connecting dots & the topography dictates largely how the trail winds its way from one to the next. So it would seem at first blush that running a race with so few checkpoints is a fairly straightforwardALLEN MOORE

HUMANS OF THE TRAIL: MARTIN EARLY Martin Early is a Kiwi, from a farming community south of Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand. Martin Early has had a fascination with the “north” that started with a book, Pierre Bear, the Greatest Hunter of the North, that was read to him as a child. Growing up in New Zealand, he tracked possums, imagining he was in Alaska. MATTERS OF THE HEART Every year on Valentine's Day we should discuss matters of the heart. If you take an elephant and put it on a scale and record its weight, and then you remove its heart and weigh it, and finally divide the weight of the heart by the weight of the elephant, you will get a dividend of approximately 0.6 percent. Then, if you take a mouse and put it on a scale and record its weight, then remove ROB COOKE | YUKON QUEST Too many to mention. A special shout out to all the race staff and volunteers in Mile 101 this year (2019) as they were all absolutely amazing and did an incredible job LEG PROTECTION FOR SLED DOGS Spectators new to marathon sled dog racing may wonder at the brightly-colored "splints" surrounding the lower legs of the dogs as they rest at the checkpoints. These devices are not splints at all, but soft and flexible wrist protectors, which the mushers use to compress the lower legs to prevent swelling.
