SKILLS SUMMARY
Skills Summary was launched in March 2019. It will provide a measurement framework for young people, youth workers and educators in the Republic of Ireland including the member organisations of the National Youth Council of Ireland and a significant number of new youth workers and sites, through the Youth Employability Initiative.WHAT IS YOUTH WORK?
Youth work has been enhancing the lives of young people and adults in Ireland for more than 100 years. It was given formal statutory recognition in the Youth Work Act 2001, which defines youth work as:. A planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and enhancing the personal and social development of young people through their voluntary involvement, and which is NATIONAL YOUTH STRATEGY 2015- 2020 The aim of the National Youth Strategy is to enable all young people to realise their maximum potential, by respecting their rights and hearing their voices, 8 STEPS TO INCLUSIVE YOUTH WORK 8 Steps to Inclusive Youth work. The NQSF includes “ensuring and promoting equality and inclusiveness” as a Core Principle of Youth Work. The National Youth Strategy states that young people should be “included in society”, that “their equality and rights are upheld”, and “their diversity is celebrated”. VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES IN YOUTH WORK This page is a one-‘start’-shop for anyone interested in volunteering in youth work. LEGISLATIVE PROCESS IN IRELAND Introduction: Apart from the European Union, the Oireachtas is the only institution in Ireland with power to make laws for the state. Most legislation is developed in the form of a Government Bill apart from Private Members Bills (which are presented by individual Oireachtas members or parties). Youth work is provided primarily by voluntary organisations, with statutory support from the Department of NATIONAL YOUTH STRATEGY 2015- 2020 The aim of the National Youth Strategy is to enable all young people to realise their maximum potential, by respecting their rights and hearing their voices, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND YOUTH These challenging goals are in place from 2015 – 2030.sustainable. It confers certain responsibilities onto the Minister for Education and Science, namely to develop and co-ordinate youth work programmes and services including co-ordination with education and other programmes. We have also developed a range of county based leaflets to help young asylum seekers and refugees (Refugee Resettlement Programme) to find out how to get involved with a youth group in their area. 'WHY DO I WORK WITH CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE?' Why do I work with children and young people? Because they are among the most engaging and most intriguing audiences you can work with. They have the same rights to culture as adults, but their circumstances create challenges that can only be met with determination, creativity and integrity. The reporting system for offline concerns should be able to receive concerns resulting from online behaviour too. Youth Organisations that work with children and young people online should have their Designated Liaison Person in place to receive all protection and welfare concerns that are related to the online work and be familiar with the type of online work that is taking place there. RURAL YOUTH: PUBLIC TRANSPORT, EMPLOYMENT AND INVESTMENT The research highlights that one of the biggest challenges facing young people living in rural Ireland is limited public transport, which hinders contact with others, impedes access to services available in urban settings and reinforces a sense of socialisolation.
