TOM HORN CONTINUED--WYOMING TALES AND TRAILS He was a celebrated army scout, Indian fighter and cattle detective. He was the scout in charge of the party that captured Geronimo and was chief of scouts under General Miles in his Porto Rico campaign. In 1892 Horn participated in the raid against the cattle rustlers of Johnston county, Wyoming. CASPER HISTORIC PHOTOS The Temple was designed by Casper architect Lavier C. Fremont forebade the keeping of any journal other than that kept by Fremont himself. Insofar as most of the men were concerned, this was a needless order since most, such as Carson, were illiterate. SPANISH DIGGINGS -- WYOMING TALES AND TRAILS The Spanish Diggings themselves are an area in the Southwest corner of Niobrara County extending across the south county line into northeastern Platte County. It is an area of canyons such as Muskrat Canyon, Dead Horse Canyon and Whalen Canyon. In Whalen Canyon there are a number of caves showing signs of previous human habitation. HISTORIC WIND RIVER BASIN PHOTOS-DUBOIS It took from April 10 until July 16 to get from St. Louis to the Wind River Basin, making 15 to 25 miles a day. CHEYENNE, THE PLAINS HOTEL--WYOMINGTALESANDTRAILS The Club under the leadership of Thomas Heaney openly advocated the construction of a new hotel. The Plains Hotel was designed by Cheyenne's leading architect, William R. Dubois in the latest Edwardian style. In 1911, the Hotel opened its doors to rave notices. TORREY'S ROUGH RIDERS--WYOMING TALES AND TRAILS Torrey's Rocky Mountain Rough Riders was one of three privately organized volunteer cavalry regiments for service in the Spanish-American War. The most famous of which was Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders. A third was a regiment organized by Colonel Melvin Grigsby, the attorney general of South Dakota. He was the scout in charge of the party that captured Geronimo and was chief of scouts under General Miles in his Porto Rico campaign. THE OREGON TRAIL III, WYOMING TALES AND TRAILS With the threat of war in the East, the Oregon Trail took on a new importance as the route of communications between California and the rest of the United States. Thus, the Pony Express was instituted. The details were laid out in an announcement in the New York Tribune: TO SAN FRANCISCO IN EIGHT DAYS. BY THE CENTRAL OVERLAND CALIFORNIA. LINCON HIGHWAY-WYOMING Lincoln Highway, tablet marking Telephone Canyon. At first the canyon was known as Evans Pass named for James Evans, an engineer with the Union Pacific. See Sherman . At first, the Lincoln Highway headed to Laramie from Buford by way of Tie Siding. In 1916 the highway was rerouted through the Canyon. The Canyon previously provided a route to BUTCH CASSIDY & SUNDANCE KID AT THE WS--WYOMING TALES AND A Vignette of the Johnson County War in Wyoming, Banding Iron Press, Evanston, 1955, as "a quiet, retiring cowboy." Wellman had been appointed to replace former foreman Frank Laberteaux who found himself in custody at Ft. D. A. Russell for his participation in the Johnson County War.
