THE TRUE STORY BEHIND _MCMILLIONS:_ THE STRANGER-THAN-FICTION STORY OF THE $24-MILLION MCDONALD’S MONOPOLY THEFT The complex crime web is the subject of HBO’s new docuseries _McMillions,_ which premiered Monday.By Julie Miller

Remember that wildly popular 1990s McDonald’s Monopoly game, with pieces you would peel off of drink cups—the one that could potentially win you anything from free fries to $1 million? Well, there’s a reason you, your friends, and most Americans never won big, even aside from the game’s inherently unfavorable odds. Between1989 and 2001
,
a former cop nicknamed “Uncle Jerry” stole many of the big-ticket stickers, and—with the help of a large criminal web—gamed the golden arches out of $24 million. Uncle Jerry’s sensational 12-year scheme is the subject of JAMES LEE HERNANDEZ and BRIAN LAZARTE’S HBO docuseries _McMillions,_ which premiered Monday. Hernandez—who was obsessed with the McDonald’s Monopoly game as a kid—stumbled upon the story late one night in 2012 while trolling Reddit. He searched the internet for more information, but maddeningly came up short—finding only a short blurb about the crime in a Jacksonville, Florida newspaper. There was good reason for the story being so under the radar, though:the trial began
on September 10, 2001, and was understandably overshadowed by the terrorist attacks the next day. Hernandez filed a freedom of information request with the Department of Justice and the FBI in 2013—and got the green light three years later to reach out to the players involved. (_The Daily Beast_ published its own story on the case in 2018.) The filmmakers convinced McDonald’s and some of the key figures to participate. In piecing together this sprawlingly intricate scheme, Hernandez and Lazarte assembled what they jokingly called a“_Beautiful Mind_–like” information room, with actual string connecting the players and subplots. In a nutshell, here’s what happened: “Uncle Jerry” was JEROME JACOBSON, a former cop who oversaw security at Simon Marketing, the company that managed McDonald’s promotions—specifically the Monopoly game pieces. Jerry handled the winning game pieces and, beginning in 1989, began accepting cash from people who heard by word-of-mouth about his Monopoly hookup in exchange for key pieces. He covered his tracks well for about a decade—by dealing with many individuals in person, and convincing them to pass the pieces to out-of-state friends or distant relatives with different names to hide any potential connection between winners. His scheme scaled significantly larger after he linked up with a few unsavory characters who acted as buffers—one with alleged mob ties—and found “winners” willing to pay Jerry substantial kickbacks. Jerry and his wife reportedly bought a lakefront property, splurged on cruises, and assembled an enviable vintage-car collection. But in 2000, the FBI got an anonymous tip about an “Uncle Jerry” rigging the McDonald’s competition. The organization launched an investigation that would uncover the fact that many of the winners—despite the out-of-state addresses they listed—actually lived within a 25-mile radius of the lakefront home Jacobson owned. According to the _Daily Beast,_ “25 agents across the country...tracked 20,000 phone numbers, and recorded 235 cassette tapes of telephone calls.” McDonald’s even sent an employee undercover to help the FBI stage a fake TV commercial campaign—_Argo_–style—to get the fraudulent winners to incriminate themselves on camera. There were raids. And in 2001, in a scene tailor-made for the third act of an action thriller, McDonald’s launched another Monopoly game—knowing that their game had been compromised—because the FBI needed more evidence. When Jerry was finally caught, according to the _Daily Beast,_ he “admitted to stealing as many as 60 game pieces over a dozen years, totaling over $24 million in prizes.” He agreed to pay $12.5 million in restitution, and was sent to jail for 37 months. According to the_New York Times_

If Jerry made one critical error, Lazarte told _Vanity Fair_ by phone Monday, it was that he didn’t know when to quit. “The greed portion is the worst part or what did him in,” Hernandez added. “Had he only done it like five years, he never would’ve been caught. But to continue going year after year after year after year…it’s just the odds eventually is that the house alwayswins.”
Hernandez and Lazarte said that many of the FBI agents they spoke to recalled the McDonald’s Monopoly investigation—which unspools over _McMillions_’ six parts—as being the most exciting of their careers. They weren’t simply sifting through bank statements and tax records, Hernandez explained. “They had to investigate it both like a white-collar case and a drug case, because they had a specific thing that they were tracking and watching happen. They were able to use so many different creative investigative techniques and combine them all to get the evidence they needed to get the convictions, or at least to be able to indict all these people.” Ultimately, more than 50 people involved in the scheme were convicted of mail fraud and conspiracy. But Hernandez and Lazarte said they felt sympathy for some of the individuals they interviewed, some of whom were struggling to financially support their families. “Who wouldn’t claim a piece if a friend or family member came to you and said, ‘I have an ironclad way for you to win $1 million. All you have to do is say you’re the one who peeled this off’?” Lazarte said. “And what we discovered throughout this entire process is everyone who did claim that piece and came forward, that action had incredible consequences that not only affected them when they got busted, but is currently affecting them to this day.” Take, for instance, GLORIA BROWN,
who was a 37-year-old struggling single mother when she paid a Jerry affiliate $40,000 cash for a $1-million game piece. “She had very real fears about herself and her son,” Hernandez said. “If you were a single mother in the situation that she was in, you might think this is your miracle, this is your chance to get ahead. And you might then gauge your morals in a way where you just turn a blind eye to it and go through with it.” “One of the big things is that life gray area,” he continued. “Things aren’t necessarily black and white. You could look at from the outside and say they’re all criminals, that they deserve what they got. But you don’t understand that you can make these small decisions that might not seem like a big deal, but they end up completely changing the rest of your life. Good people just sometimes make bad decisions.” More Great Stories from _Vanity Fair_ — _Vanity Fair_’s 2020 Hollywood cover is here with Eddie Murphy, Renée Zellweger, Jennifer Lopez & more — Who would defend Harvey Weinstein? — Oscar nominations 2020: what went wrong—and
