ELISABETH MOSS BRAVELY BATTLES _THE INVISIBLE MAN_’S ONSLAUGHT A reimagining of a horror classic for the #MeToo era gives its lead lots to do—before it fails her.

ELISABETH MOSS is letting loose. After leaving the relatively constricted Midtown spaces of _Mad Men_, she moved to the stifling oppression of _The Handmaid’s Tale_. Both shows afforded Moss moments of rebellious power, but neither have allowed for the free-for-all thrashing of Moss’s exciting recent film work. Last year, she whipped up a feverish storm as a drug-addled rockstar in _Her Smell_. At Sundance this year, she tore around a mid-century house as booze-addled Shirley Jackson in _Shirley_. And now she’s got the terrified arc of _The Invisible Man_, out February 29, to play with white-knuckle commitment. _Invisible Man_ is more of a commercial film than Moss tends to do—it’s her first true lead role in a studio movie, in fact. But there is still plenty of opportunity for Moss to really work the extreme levels, from tormented to avenging to, one hopes, on the way to catharsis. The film is written and directed by _Saw_ co-creator LEIGH WHANNELL, though blessedly this is not a smirkingly nihilistic bit of torture horror. No, there is a hefty emotional component here, as Moss’s Cecilia struggles to get free of her abusive husband (OLIVER JACKSON-COHEN)—even after he’s supposedly died. Whannell has found a grimly clever, and timely, way for Universal to update H.G. Wells’s old creation, forging a leaner and meaner path forward for the studio’s stable of monster classics after the grand plan for an interconnected “Dark Universe” of tentpole creature features

loudly collapsed.

Moss eagerly seizes on the intellectual and physical demands of the role, charging forward on the movie’s eerie, sorrowful wavelength for as long as she can. The beginning stretches of _Invisible Man_ are close to terrific. Whannell creates a mood of almost unbearable dread as, in the film’s harrowing opening sequence, Cecilia escapes her husband, and then as her newly settled-ish, happy-ish life is gradually disrupted by the presence of . . . something. These scenes, when Cecilia is alone in the house she’s staying in (or when everyone else is asleep), are triumphs of lo-fi suspense. Shadows and lumpy sheets and floorboard creaks are all Whannell needs—OK, maybe some fishing wire, too—to get the blood up. Of course, there’s also Moss, selling all this creeping terror as a nightmare, yes, but

also as a tragedy.

For Cecilia, the growing sense that something malevolent is in the house with her is terrible confirmation that her ex-husband’s threats were never empty: he really can and will find her anywhere she goes, will always govern her life, even after he’s technically gone. That’s a shattering thing, and such a common fear—and reality—for so many trying to escape from cycles of abuse. Compounding that horror is the fact that Cecilia’s loved ones—her childhood friend James (a cop played by ALDIS HODGE), his daughter Sydney (STORM REID), and Cecilia’s sister Alice (HARRIET DYER)—are pretty instantly skeptical of her concerns. So she’s being stalked and gaslit and not believed, the film turning into one of those agonizing movies where a person screams and screams that they’re not crazy only to have it fall on caring but incredulous ears. Up to this point, Whannell’s film is robust, observant, sharp. Sure, there’s a little contrivance lurking here and there, but for the most part it’s an admirably economical, thoughtfully textured little chiller. But then, well, then some bad impulses take over, and _The Invisible Man_ turns into an action movie with a lot of just-okay computer graphics, while STEFAN DUSCIO’s lush, foreboding cinematography is eschewed for violent mechanics and BENJAMIN WALLFISCH’s score stretches for overwrought crescendo. I’m not going to spoil anything specific about the plot on the off chance anyone reading this doesn’t know what _The Invisible Man_ is about (or has never seen the PAUL VERHOEVEN schlock classic/gruesome social satire _Hollow Man_). But Whannell’s script eventually calls for guns and CGI and all that other ho-hum stuff you can see in so many other movies. _The Invisible Man_ loses its personality as it tumbles into the third act, and with it goes a lot of the emotional fiber Moss has worked so hard to spin into something rich and memorable. She still holds her own as the movie crumbles around her, but her performance deserves better than what Whannell ultimately gives her. Would that he had resisted the impulse to go bigger, to macho up the movie in a way that feels like a vague betrayal of its heroine. Cecilia has regained the focus by the end, but by then she’s spent too much time sidelined as the movie indulged in its scuzzier possibilities. Yeah, an adaptation _The Invisible Man_ can go in a more muscly thriller direction if need be. But it didn’t need to this time. The woman at the center of the film—so sensitively realized by Moss—is more than enough. If only Whannell had stuck more resolutely to the promise of his film’s title.
