The Bullring did not disappoint, despite the loss of the morning session to rain and an early exit for bad light. The ball whizzed through at pace; most batsmen felt the urge to respond aggressively. It paid to keep a close eye on proceedings. This venue may not be beautiful but it is a modern Colosseum of cricket, which requires bravery as well as skill among the combatants. After 54.2 overs of play England, having chosen to bat, despite all that early-morning moisture, were 192 for four. They may be satisfied by that, even though the openers posted a century partnership, but they must also be aware that the game can change rapidly here; the nicks carry, the adrenaline flows and the pendulum swings. Like the old Waca ground at Perth it is a place where any cricketer worth his salt wants to play, which may explain the obvious disappointment of Jofra Archer when he had to acknowledge that a recurrence of pain in his right elbow when bowling before the start precluded him from returning to the team. So the only change to the England side was that Chris Woakes replaced Dom Bess. Everyone loves the Bullring except the finger-spinner. Faf du Plessis lost his seventh toss in a row and Zak Crawley and Dominic Sibley soon set to work diligently. In fact Du Plessis might have welcomed losing this toss. He said he would have gambled on bowling, which goes against the grain here. After a wicketless session such a decision might have added to his cricketing woes, which appear to be mounting by the day. Crawley was fluent from the start, cover driving with remarkable grace for such a tall man. Soon Du Plessis began to shuffle his bowlers with increasing desperation. Like England he had dispensed with his specialist spinner so there was limited variety available, though the new cap, Beuran Hendricks, a mere 29, does propel the ball with his left arm. He tried his fastest bowler, Anrich Nortje, but 12 runs came from his first over. Full-pitched deliveries declined to swing and Crawley in particular kept disposing of them. Sibley had more alarms. On 10 he was given out caught down the leg side off Hendricks by umpire Joel Wilson; he reviewed immediately and successfully. On 12 he was caught in the gully off Philander but on this occasion Joel Wilson had been on the ball – by calling a no-ball. Otherwise there were few alarms. Vernon Philander was blander than usual and the recalled Dwaine Pretorius was blander than that. Before long Crawley had posted a career-best score in his fifth Test innings in succession; the last Englishman to do that was Ian Peeblesin 1928.

So England were sitting pretty on a surface with sufficient pace to invite strokeplayers to display their wares; the bounce was generous but true. But after tea, while the runs kept coming at a good lick, the wickets started falling as well. Sibley was genuinely caught down the leg side for 44 to give Hendricks his first Test wicket; then Crawley, in two or possibly three minds (whether to pull, defend or leave) was caught at slip off Philander. Joe Denly naturally reached double figures – for the 22nd time in 25 innings – but his was an unusual innings by the standards he has set on this tour. He was positively skittish. A couple of glorious cover drives were interspersed with edges, inside and outside, that sped to the boundary and on 22 a hard chance was dropped by Pieter Malan at cover point off Dane Paterson. Then Denly propped forward in defence to Paterson and this time the edge found the gloves of Quinton deKock.
Now came the wicket that the South Africans really celebrated with glee. It has been noticeable how often Du Plessis has mentioned the excellence of Ben Stokes in this series, as an example for his players to follow: this pair were colleagues in the IPL back in 2017 and there is clearly mutual respect in abundance. His wicket is treasured perhaps as much as Joe Root’s. So, when Stokes miscued with an unusually ugly drive – he seemed to be aiming somewhere on the leg side – and the ball flew into the increasingly reliable hands of Rassie van der Dussen at slip, the South Africans were cock-a-hoop. Stokes, however, was not and a few choice words to a spectator as he departed may have lasting ramifications for the ICC cricketer of theyear.
The Spin: sign up and get our weekly cricket email. Batting was far more taxing now and Root and Ollie Pope, both busily seizing any run-scoring chances, batted well as the light faded. They were tested along the way; there was an involuntary four over the slip cordon from Root as he sought to avoid a Nortje bouncer; Pope ended up on the floor as he took late, evasive action from a Hendricks bouncer. And they say the pitch quickens up on the second day. AMERICA FACES AN EPIC CHOICE... ... in the coming year, and the results will define the country for a generation. These are perilous times. Over the last three years, much of what the Guardian holds dear has been threatened – democracy, civility, truth. This US administration is establishing new norms of behaviour. Anger and cruelty disfigure public discourse and lying is commonplace. Truth is being chased away. But with your help we can continue to put it center stage. Rampant disinformation, partisan news sources and social media's tsunami of fake news is no basis on which to inform the American public in 2020. The need for a robust, independent press has never been greater, and with your support we can continue to provide fact-based reporting that offers public scrutiny and oversight. Our journalism is free and open for all, but it's made possible thanks to the support we receive from readers like you across America in all 50states.
_"America is at a tipping point, finely balanced between truth and lies, hope and hate, civility and nastiness. Many vital aspects of American public life are in play – the Supreme Court, abortion rights, climate policy, wealth inequality, Big Tech and much more. The stakes could hardly be higher. As that choice nears, the Guardian, as it has done for 200 years, and with your continued support, will continue to argue for the values we hold dear – facts, science, diversity, equality and fairness."_ – US editor, John Mulholland On the occasion of its 100th birthday in 1921 the editor of the Guardian said, "Perhaps the chief virtue of a newspaper is its independence. It should have a soul of its own." That is more true than ever. Freed from the influence of an owner or shareholders, the Guardian's editorial independence is our unique driving force andguiding principle.

Good start again by openers batting through first session without the lose of a wicket in consecutive tests after it not being done for 11 years. Crawley looked particularly fluent and when Burns returns to have 4 players vying for the top 3 spots is a refreshing change to the past few years of revolving door selection. Crawley also managed to hit his highest test score for the fifth consecutive innings, I wonder who has the record for doing that…Jump to comment

You are right.
There is absolutely no way he should have responded in kind to the angelic, lute-playing cherubim of The Wanderers. Let's say it how it is: match-going South African supporters are generally an utter disgrace and they have form for constantly insulting David Warner over his wife's supposed involvement with a rugby player. They constantly fish for reactions from outgoing batters as has been documented throughout the series. I'm going to applaud Ben Stokes for putting one of these pathetic individuals squarely in their place.Reply

Don't know if falter is entirely fair. Cheap wickets to give away but it's not quite the collapse we're all accustomed too. Hoping there's no outrage at Ben Stokes being wound up in the heat of the moment too. It's professional sports for god sake, if you're insulted by that you're in the wrong place.Reply

Outrage is obviously not necessary. Equally a top professional ought to have the self discipline to avoid responding to provocation. After all batsmen are regularly 'provoked'at the crease.
By trying to focus on "insulting" are you trying to misdirect? A disappointing lack of self control from a 'professional' is an entirely different thing from insulting.Reply

That's what they did to the racist idiot in NZ: looked for him, found him and banned him. I assume they would have done the same even if Archer had thrown a kiwifruit at him in retaliation; and rightly so. But it might be argued that comparing someone to Ed Sheeran doesn't entirely qualify as racist.Reply

WHAT is with this current moralising garbage and pearl clutching about cricketers swearing? I swear like fifteen times an hour, because I’m an adult and can choose what words I say. Racism, homophobia, sexism, fair enough, that has absolutely no place, but just saying a swear word? Come off it, we’re not children we can accept that sometimes, god FUCKING forbid, an adult may utter a swear word.Reply

I wonder if any contributors with a concern for the welfare of Somerset CC are worried that Philander on a helpful pitch and in his last international hurrah looks a little unimpressive. Taunton isn't exactly a seamer's paradise, his fitness isn't great, so I'm not sure what the minimum output is for his deal to prove "value for money" forSomerset.

Good start again by openers batting through first session without the lose of a wicket in consecutive tests after it not being done for 11 years. Crawley looked particularly fluent and when Burns returns to have 4 players vying for the top 3 spots is a refreshing change to the past few years of revolving door selection. Crawley also managed to hit his highest test score for the fifth consecutive innings, I wonder who has the record for doing that and for how many innings? Did Root/Pope to put on similar partnership to Stokes/Pope last match and not waste the good start.Reply

Stoksey at it again. Jos mouthing off to Philander last time round. Root and co telling an out batsman to leave the crease. If these blokes were Aussies, a ton of vitriol would be descending on them from across the cricketing fandom, again. Not a bad day's play for the neutral. Well done to the English openers for getting away very cleanly and intelligently. Well done too to the SA attack for adjusting their length after tea and brining success with it. About evens just now I'd think. SA will have been bummed to not be able to bowl out the day.Reply

'You cannot react like that Ben Stokes. You cannot react like that'.Why not?
South Africa is a hostile place to go and play cricket. It's not like going to Lords. The fans heckle and yell insults to amuse themselves, like they do in many football grounds. What Ben Stokes has done is respond in kind to provocation that presumably began in the stands of The Wanderers. I don't think they were saying, 'unlucky Stokesy, better luck in the second innings, old boy'. If you dish it out, you should expect to get some in return. I totally back vice captain Ben Stokes in this matter and think we should continue to stand up to provocation from our not too blamelessopponents.
Maybe Jack Leach could send him a complementary pair of glasses, courtesy of the England squad?Reply

With the Stokes stuff yeah it doesn't feel all the wrong if someone's sworn at him and he just swore back a bit. The law should just say if you swear at a player they're allowed to give some back. But it doesn't say that and now he's quite possibly going to get a ban so it's probably not advisable. It's a bit like the Rabada situation. Most people won't feel like he's done anything wrong and the laws an ass but given the player knew what the rules were it's a bit silly to get yourself banned.Reply

He's not going to get a ban, he's going to get a disciplinary point, exactly like Rabada did, and lose his match fee. It'll only be a ban if, like Rabada, he's one disciplinary point away from one already. The tea in this cup is bowing up squally.Reply

Anyone else not see the big deal about Stokes issue? Guy insults him, he insults him back. Both adults. Sky were the ones that decide to show it. Are they just meant to stand there and take it? Openers looking good, shame about Denly as it looks like he may well lose his place after this but I’d keen him the squad. Useful and gritty player and part of the reason I feel the team has more balanced and batting better. All top 3 in fact.Poor archer :(

Should have Cantona'd the fekker. The joys of live sport eh, you reckon you can throw the nastiest insults at people doing their job just because you can, and you think you'll get away with it. I'm all up for one or two being shut up occasionally. An angry Stokes with helmet for protection and bat in his hands, there's not many who wouldn't cower away from him if he went and stared right in their eyes from two inches away. 'I... I didn't mean you... Ben... Benny...'Reply

Such a sublime first session... stretching the dream of recentperformances.
Then, woah boy... I know nostalgia is a big seller these days but four for 50. But too soon, maybe in another 8-10 years or so. Denly seemed uncharacteristically frantic. Crawley was aces, Sibbers too. Despite a rally in the final session it looks like nights will get longer before then days grow brighter.Reply

The current Sunfoil (formerly Currie Cup) champions are the Titans. Of their 35-man squad just six are aged under 25. Unfortunately, that's typical of all of the top teams and there's been a serious breakdownin the pipeline.

We gave a test debut to Joe Denly at the age of 32 last year. Also, apart from the brilliant Rabada, many of those players that are now getting their debuts have had to wait in line because of the excellence of the incumbents. A dozen or fifteen years ago, we in England used to speak in awe of the way Australians made their debuts in their early thirties (if they ever even got into the side) because they'd had to wait for the excellent incumbents to make way. Bringing in mature cricketers can be a sign of strength or of weakness I suppose, depending on circumstance.Reply

Denly was a one off attempt at trying to solve a problem England had had for half a decade. They tried younger options like Westley and Vince first but they didn't work out. The also tried numerous fudges with players like Bairstow and Moen. When Denly got the call they had just about run out of cards to play. In terms of South Africa perhaps these new guys are decent I don't know much about them as I don't follow Domestic cricket from there but to have so many of them making their debuts at the same time would seem to suggest the young talent isn't available.Reply

Couldn't agree more. Seems the Guardian comments has been infected with the kind of folk that pile onto Twitter and dismiss everyone who isn't agreeing with them of being "wet" and "snowflakes." Still, the folk in charge of cricket are happy to watch the sport disappear into obscurity so the upside is that they can all go back to shouting at football on Sky in a few years. Win-win I guess.Reply

Denly very jittery today, makes me wonder if he's feeling increasingly pressured about his place, especially with Crawley scoring runs. I like Denly, he's got some character, but he won't last with inningslike that.

If everyone was fit I don’t think Denly would be playing ( and as Rob Croft just said on TV once he’s dropped that’s his test career probably over, he will be 34 in a few weeks ). Our top 3 this summer will probably be Crawley, Sibley and Burns. Not sure what orderthough.

I suspect Crawley’s 66 today has kept him in the side for the tests in Sri Lanka. Had he not managed a knock like that in this match the selectors may well have brought back Jennings as ‘ a horses forcourses’ option.
I expect Burns to walk straight back into the side and partner Sibley at the top of the order in the summer. If Denly gets runs in Sri Lanka he’ll stay at 3 if he doesn’t then I suspect they will tryCrawley.
Crawley is still young and learning his trade and should he end up going back to county cricket next summer I doubt it’ll do him anyharm.
