With the outcome of their season hinging on their progress in the FA Cup after being dumped out of the Europa League, the Arsenal manager saw his faith in youth rewarded by a clinical away victory thanks to goals either side of half-time from Sokratis Papstathopoulos and Eddie Nketiah. Against motivated opponents backed by a vociferous crowd, Arsenal rode the early Portsmouth storm and it took two flashes of inspiration from the returning Reiss Nelson to ease their path into the sixth round. The forward – one of six players aged 20 or under who started here - was a constant menace down the right flank and totally justified his inclusion ahead of the £72m record signing Nicolas Pépé with a brilliant performance that showed Arsenal supporters there may be reasons to be positive about the future after all. PORTSMOUTH 0-2 ARSENAL: FA CUP FIFTH ROUND – AS IT HAPPENEDRead more
“I’m pleased with all of them – the kids responded really well,” said a delighted Arteta. “I was looking at them in the 94th minute and they were still pressing and chasing. It’s a joy. I’m really enjoying working with them. They fully deserve the chance. I know it’s risky to play them in this competition but it’s worththat risk.”
With the FA Cup representing Arsenal’s last chance of silverware this season after their defeat by Olympiakos,
Arteta surprisingly made nine changes, with the Spanish defender Pablo Marí handed his debut. Nelson returned from injury to make his first start of the year in a youthful attacking trio alongside Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah. Arteta admitted his team selection had been influenced by the Europa League defeat that had left several of his senior players “still hanging on what happened”. He had been similarly bold in selecting his emerging crop of young players in the ruthless victory at Bournemouth in the last round but against a Portsmouth side who had won their last 10 home matches in all competitions, this trip to Fratton Park was always likely to be a more testing occasion. The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email. Not since the infamous defeat to Wrexham in 1992 have Arsenal been eliminated from the competition by a team from outside the top two divisions but in Kenny Jackett, their rookie manager was up against someone with real pedigree in the FA Cup.
The former Wales midfielder played for Watford in the 1984 final and also guided Millwall to the last four in 2013, with Portsmouth having already seen off four teams to reach this stage. Third in League One and chasing a return to the second tier for the first time in nearly eight years, there is a positivity around the club not seen since the 2008 FA Cup triumph and it was reflected in the bouncing atmosphere at the kick-off.Twitter Pinterest
Sokratis Papastathopoulos (second left) volleyed Arsenal into a 1-0 lead just before half-time. Photograph: James Marsh/BPI/Shutterstock Despite making six changes from the win over Rochdale on Friday that included leaving the captain, Tom Naylor, and the top scorer, Ronan Curtis, on the bench, it was not hard to see how Portsmouth have put together such an impressive record at this old ground given the waythey started.
Arsenal did well to withstand the early barrage and Lucas Torreira was withdrawn after quarter of an hour following a bad challenge from James Bolton and the midfielder left the ground on crutches with hisankle in a brace.
Portsmouth continued to make the running as they were serenaded with chants of “We’re our way back” from three sides of the ground, even if they failed to really test Emiliano Martínez in the Arsenalgoal.
Matteo Guendouzi’s harsh booking for placing the ball on the pitch in an over-deliberate manner as he took a free-kick would have done nothing to improve Arteta’s mood as half-time approached but a brilliantly composed finish from Papstathopoulos in first-half injury time from Nelson’s pinpoint cross settled his nerves at just theright time.

“We needed those moments in the first half to go for us,” Jackett said. “We disappointed not to go in at 0-0. That deflated us.” Tony Adams, who was the assistant manager to Harry Redknapp in 2008 before taking over a few months after their famous triumph at Wembley, was introduced at half-time to a rapturous reception from both sets of fans. He also lifted the FA Cup three times with Arsenal and will have been impressed with the way the side he captained with such distinction for 14 years put the tie out of reach within six minutesof the second half.
Fittingly in the city synonymous with his maritime namesake, once again it was Nelson who provided the ammunition after leaving his marker, Steve Seddon, for dead to allow Nketiah to bundle home at thenear post.
Jackett threw on boyhood Arsenal fan Curtis and striker partner John Marquis in a last throw of the dice but Portsmouth struggled to exert the kind of pressure they enjoyed in the first half, with Bukayo Saka’s shot almost extending Arsenal’s lead as the clock tickeddown.
Portsmouth know their main priority is to achieve promotion, while Arteta will take heart from the way his new-look defence saw out this victory with minimal fuss after all the last-minute drama againstOlympiakos.

I hope giving senior players a rest means top performances in the league to fight for fourth place. If we slack in our next game, we may as well play the kids until the end of season.Reply

Don’t worry, thanks to you I’ll have many more things to celebrate this season:) Like the day it will be mathematically impossible for you to finish in the top four. Shouldn’t be too long now. I wonder what will come first. Our 19th league title or your no top four day?Reply

A tricky game for Arsenal in the first half, but once they woke up, and once Pompey had used up all their energy, the outcome was pretty obvious. OK, overall, they made a bit of a meal dealing with a League 1 side, but they got their act together and took control of the game. The kids up front did well, especially Nelson. Mari looked ok at the back, and Luiz pretty good. Saka had one his less good games (relative to his superlative performances in previous games), but I just don't get the Sokratis at fullback thing, when the perfectly decent Maitland-Niles is there. Ceballos and Guendouzi were fine. I just hope Torreira is ok after that unnecessarily hard tackle.Reply

Is Mike Dean bent or just incompetent. An elbow in the face goes unpunished as does a nasty stamp but he books Guendouzi for sarcasm. He also allowed Portsmouth to take a quick free kick but did not allow Arsenal the same, hence Guendouzi’s piss-take. Dean is disgracefully inconsistent and obviously biased. How is Dean still officiating atthe top level?

Have you ever seen refs in the lower leagues? In fact, have you ever seen the refs that officiate the prem matches that don't get shown on BT or Sky? Bad as Dean is, he's actually a hell of a lot better than them. I say this with a heavy heart by the way.Reply

Long story short, we got sold like a cheap whore from one shady owner to the next, passing through the hands of rather nasty businessmen who were in some kind of war with each other but the club was being used as collateral by all of them. Two administrations, one in 2010, one in 2012. Nearly went out of business altogether in 2013. The fans' supporter's trust raised a share scheme where £1,000 would buy a share. Raised enough money to do a settlement figure with the worst of the shady businessmen in order to get our club back. Dropped to League 2 in 2013. Nearly went in to non-league. Promoted to League 1 in 2017. Sold to Michael Eisner (former Disney CEO) in 2018, and he's owned us ever since. Debt free since 2015 and operationally sound, probably for the first time in about 30-odd years. It's been a journey. The best part is after spending nearly 10 years talking about all the problems we had off the pitch, now we can spend our time talking about matters on it, instead.Reply

I ask this after every game I see him, but how the fuck is Mike Dean still a thing? He's such a pompous twit and he's not even subtle about his bias. 20 years he's been a PL ref! TWENTY!!! Another poor first half from Arsenal. One of Emery's habits that Arteta is yet to shake off. Much better after the goal though and the second was as easy as it should have been. Liked the look of Mari, very nice on the ball. Most of the youngsters did well again. Willock is the only one I have a question mark about. Don't think he should be near the first team at the moment.Reply

Best part is we did ok, didn't disgrace ourselves with a 2-0 loss, we can focus on hammering Posh this weekend and absolutely obliterating Salford at Wembley for the EFL trophy. Not a bad night. Just reminds me why I'm not fussed about returning to the prem any time soon with some very strange comments from Arsenal fans who, if you believed them, monstered us from first to last and were never in doubt of beating us. Try telling that to Luiz because about 20 minutes into the first half he looked like he was shitting himself as the realisation sunk in that yes, we actually could play a bit of football..Reply

Good result and a decent performance against lower-level opposition with minimal drama, which is what we want to see. Not too much to comment on, although Nketiah has a good nose for goal, although he still needs to work on his all-round game, but he has looked increasingly effective in the minutes he has been getting. Nelson back after injury and was very good, but will need to transfer some of that output against stronger opposition, as in the Premier League to date he has not looked as threatening. Martinelli a bit out of form but a youngster, so expected. Some thoughts on some of the match blog comments about the need to rebuild. I think it's an accepted fact that Arsenal need to rebuild, but we do have a lot of pretty promising youngsters coming through that have been getting solid amounts of first-team experience, and retain some decent first-team players at a good age that would be the spine. I think that Arteta has shown clear ideas in his thinking about how he wants the team to play, so he needs to be backed and given time next season to find his feet and see what he can really do.Reply

It is so good to watch the likes of Nelson, Saka, Willock and Nketiah do their stuff with freedom and a licence to attack from the manager. This is so much better than watching Ozil pull the ball elegantly from the sky before tapping it 10 yards backwards of square and not taking part in the rest of the game.Reply

Same as the league cup against Southampton really. Better team for 40 minutes, full of energy and pressing, and then one bit of quality in front of goal from the opposition and it all changes, they have better fitness and most importantly are able to ride out periods of the game where they arent are top without conceding, no way back againt elite Premier league sides when that happensReply

Agreed. {I'm a gooner.} It was the quality to use the 2nd ball from a set piece just before HT. Then a 2nd just after and that was that. Keep ball. I was asking on an AFC forum when was the last time we got knocked out of two cups in a week during the first half.Reply

You might call it fair, but I'd call it utterly reckless. I know Bolton got a bit of the ball as well, but to absolutely smash the player in the process is hardly the epitome of fairness. Also, going on about Adams, Keown, Vieira etc, is pushing it a bit, seeing as we're talking 20 years ago or so, and even if they could be rough, does one thing justify the other?Reply

It's lovely to see the way Ian Wright has taken Nketiah under his wing, and it's starting to show in Eddie's performances too. He's looking better and better the more he plays, Leeds were bonkers to leave him out for the somewhat lamentable Bamford, I'm so glad we'vebrought him back.

We took the train...the long train ride to Portsmouth and we arrived with hours to spare. This was the FA Cup...this was the only chance of glory this season for the Arsenal. We walked out of the station confidence, calm and happy. It's always nice to come back to lovely Portsmouth..home of shipping..home of the armada. We had to come and pay homage to Lord Nelson, the man who saved England in it's darkest hour. The hero of Trafalgar. The lion of England. A cold, cold afternoon with a strong wind blowing. We had our Burberry coats on and scraf's around the neck. Decked in navy blue. Navy blue. To celebrate our navy. A visit to HMS Victory and then off for a typical south coast burger at The Eldon Arms. We had to be there and had to taste it. Lovely! And imported fine whiskey to boot! Arsenal fielded a young side and the new signing Mari from Brazil. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the old stadium that has seen better days since Alan Brazil and the boys of 79. A comfortable 2-0 win...against an under strenght team and we were laughing, checking our mobile phones for updates and then an early departure to catch out train back to the London waterloo in corporatefirst class.
We had our day in Portsmouth...and it was time to go. It was time to get back to civilization.Reply
