Bruno Fernandes is congratulated after his penalty opened the scoring for Manchester United against Club Brugge at Old Trafford. Photograph: Oli Scarff/AFP via Getty Images Another scintillating Bruno Fernandes display swept Manchester United

into the last

16 and on this showing they are serious contenders for a second Europa League crown in three years. Fernandes’s vision gives United a new dimension and elevates his teammates. The playmaker scored a second penalty in two games and though naysayers may claim this was “only” Club Brugge

, United have

struggled against similar opponents under Ole Gunnar Solskjær. This was a performance that crushed the visitors and took United to seven matches unbeaten, a run that includes six clean sheets. It left the manager pleased. “I’m very happy tonight,” he said . “When you score goals and play like this it gives more

confidence.”

Of his star man Solskjær said: “Bruno is fit, in good form and we felt he was something we needed and so it

proves.”

Odion Ighalo made a first start owing to Anthony Martial’s muscle injury, while Scott McTominay ended a two-month absence as Solskjær made seven changes from the first leg. The start was fast and furious. Juan Mata fired from 20-yards and forced Simon Mignolet to parry. The goalkeeper fired a long clearance into David Okereke’s path and though Harry Maguire was left flailing United scrambled clear. United were further troubled when Maxim De Cuyper crossed from the left and Sergio Romero inadvertently punched the ball to Mats Rits who

ballooned over.

The pace was relentless as the outstanding Fernandes. If he was left frustrated after a foray that allowed him to unload a shot only for Mignolet to keep the match goalless but the deadlock seemed unlikely to last.. It was soon broken in farcical circumstances. Daniel James’s shot was curling into the corner before Simon Deli flung himself to his left in what would have been a save-of-the season contender if he was a goalkeeper. Serdar Gozubuyuk awarded the penalty for handball and showed the defender a red card but the comedy continued when the referee reviewed the incident on the pitch-side monitor. He confirmed the original decision and Fernandes, whose wait stretched past four minutes, converted. “I don’t know why the boy did it,” said Solskjær of Deli. “But that is not a fair attempt to stop a goalscoring

opportunity.”

United’s control had tightened so they needed to turn their dominance into more goals. McTominay teed up James but he could not finish so Ighalo showed him how, courtesy of some fine Fernandes trickery. He twisted to the left of Brugge’s area and floated in a ball that reached Mata at the far post. His return pass was slide-rule precise for Ighalo, who bundled in a classic sniffer’s finish for his first goal for the club. The striker pointed to the heavens and revealed a T-shirt that carried a tribute to his deceased sister. Solskjær said: “I think as a fellow striker I know how important that first goal is. He is there where it sometimes hurts and that goal, was sharp, on the six-yard line when Juan puts it there: that’s a natural

striker.”

The on-loan man went close to a second when holding off Federico Ricca but Mignolet saved. He could do nothing about the third, though. Fernandes – again the creator – tee-ed up McTominay and from outside the area the midfielder passed the ball precisely into the

bottom corner.

ROUNDUP: INTER SEE OFF LUDOGORETS AT EMPTY SAN SIRO

Show Hide

INTERNAZIONALE came from behind on the night to beat Ludogorets 2-1 at an eerily quiet San Siro, completing a 4-1 aggregate victory in a game played behind closed doors due to coronavirus fears. No fans were present at the 70,000-capacity stadium as a near-post finish from Cristiano Biraghi and a Romelu Lukaku header denied the Bulgarians, who had taken the lead through Cauly Souza. "It seemed like a training session, playing behind closed doors created a very strange atmosphere," said Inter coach Antonio Conte. "The lads did well to put things back in place immediately after we

suffered the goal."

It was a night to forget for Portuguese sides, with BENFICA, PORTO and SPORTING all joining Braga in going out at the last-32 stage. Benfica drew 3-3 with SHAKHTAR DONETSK in Lisbon, losing 5-4 overall, while Porto were outclassed by LEVERKUSEN, who won 5-2 on aggregate. Sporting were twice within a minute of overcoming ISTANBUL BASAKSEHIR, only for Edin Visca to score on both occasions – first to send the game into extra time, and then to complete a 5-4 aggregate win from the penalty spot. Jaime Mata's early goal for GETAFE made the difference as they edged out AJAX despite a 2-1 defeat in Amsterdam. Elsewhere, Justin Kluivert cancelled out Jonathan David's opener as ROMA progressed with a 1-1 draw at GENT, while SEVILLA were held to a 0-0 draw by CLUJ, but edged through on away goals. Was this helpful?

Thank you for your feedback. James made way for Tahith Chong for the second half in what was a golden chance for the 20-year-old to impress against 10-man opposition. His first contribution was to fall on his backside under pressure from Odilon Kossounou. When Mata was downed under the same player’s attention it was ruled a foul to the left of the D, but Fernandes spooned it wide. United were in cruise control playing pinball football at will and serving notice that no one will want to draw them in the last 16. Chong came off worse in a collision with Mignolet but was able to continue and when Fernandes’s match ended after 65 minutes he wandered off to deserved applause. Chong grew into the match as illustrated by a run and cross that fell invitingly to Luke Shaw. The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email. Mason Greenwood entered for the closing stages and though the 18-year-old is United’s top-scorer in the competition it was left to Fred to complete the rout, scoring twice in the last eight minutes. Solskjær could joke about this. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to be alive the next time he scored a goal,” he said of the Brazilian. Next is Sunday’s trip to Everton. Solskajer is unsure if Martial can feature. “He tried today – reported, had a fitness test this morning. It’s not a hamstring, it’s in and around the knee area,” the Norwegian said.

My takeaway from this match report is that Fred's full name is

Frederico Fred.

Brilliant.

Whisper it but that Ighalo goal was exactly the type that Martial and Rashford need to score more of, ones when the ball is rolling around within 12 yards of the line. They're great when running forwards into the area on the counter, not so good for scuffing them in from balls

across the box.

Otherwise, all great really. Good run-outs for a few who needed it, rests for others... and goals n assists for Fred, Lingard... McTominay

back.

Bruno. Is…

The fact that we have had about 458 false dawns under ole should make me cautious about getting too excited about this united team.... and yet..... here I am ready to believe that this is the turning point for the lads. Solid end to the season, move on Pogba and bring in Timo Werner and Grealish, then who the fuck knows what could happen. We may never win the league again but if we score goals, move the ball forward quickly and scare the shit out…

That red card check was the most absurd VAR nonsense I've seen so far. Deli pulls off a magnificent diving save - completely bang to rights for all to see - but the ref has to faff around for an extra three or four minutes to check whether it was in fact a goalscoring opportunity. The ball was goalbound and was deliberately stopped by a hand... do we really need to pause the game for so long and heap pressure on the penalty taker?

As an aside, de…

Seriously, go with what you have and can bring in, but get rid of Pogba. If he was at Liverpool we would have got rid ages ago. But then we probably wouldn't have even entertained an interest in him in the

first place.

Fernandes has made a huge difference, what a breath of fresh air. United are looking much better now. However, that match was over as a contest with that daft handball. Spurs, Arsenal & Chelsea are probably all out of Europe now & can concentrate on 4th & 5th in the league which may make a crucial

difference.

Then again, if United can build in confidence the new found positivity may see them through.

Turned more corners than Lewis Hamilton to be fair. Usually followed by a honkingly poor performance and result. I'll reserve judgement.

Good result, good win and a good chance to rest some of the lads as early as half-time which is important considering our lack of depth. B Fernandes isn't just an excellent player; he was also a big part of one of Mata's best performances in years due, simply, to the fact that Juan finally has someone with similar vision to play with. The chemistry between the two of them was the best thing to come out of the match last night. Fernandes was bought with the hope that he'd be a key player - he's already helped Matic turn back the clock and he seems to have unlocked Mata as well. The quality of the finishing was exemplary, the passing was slick and pacy, the defence was largely untroubled. Fernandes also offers a threat from set pieces which is something we've largely been missing, Scotty's scream of release and relief after scoring actually made me get out of bed and celebrate as well and JLingz actually had a really good cameo. Bailly being back adds a LOT of pace and a bit of bite to our back line, Shaw had another really good match, AWB impressed again, Mason is SO dangerous from anywhere in and around the box that he is an absolutely fabulous weapon to have in the drawer. Fred, for all his detractors, has my utmost respect for never shying away from the challenge of adapting, never hiding from the ball even when he was struggling a bit and playing himself through the difficult patches and into sterling form. Glad for him, and equally glad for Odion; Ighalo's hold up play is quality, his touch is solid and he makes good runs and good decisions. Playing him as one of a front two with Martial to play off him seems like it could be a worthwhile experiment. I can't count the number of times that one of the lads applauded another's pass that didn't quite come off, gave thanks for those that did or apologised for not getting to one. I loved seeing that, I loved seeing B Fernandes, Mata and Fred smiling while playing at home. I really enjoyed this match, not for the result but for what I saw. A team, playing for each other and for the badge. It's been a long time.

Let's stop immediately seeing Fernándes as the savior. I think he has shown all the signs of a great signing. I have followed him for nearly three seasons and he hasn't reached his peak. Has two qualities that Man Utd was lacking. Perfect vision/passing and natural leadership. So not an image superstar but one who likes his feet to do the talking That said, did anybody really think Man Utd was going to crash out against Club Brugge? Similar side to Alkmaar.

Important not to get carried away the result last night. A good performance but there was always going to be more time on the ball and more space with the extra player from the absolutely ludicrous red

card early on.

Fernandes does seem to be keen on proving a point in the midfield though - I'd be happy to let Pogba stink up someone elses' dressing room next season IF Fernandes holds this form for the rest of the season. Hard couple of season defining games coming up. If we beat City then we can start talking about a turn around.

Poor Paul, he was the best player in the club and now he's watching Bruno show everyone what that really means, from the sidelines. Can't wait for him to get binned off good and proper in the summer, him and Riola in particular can do one.

Let's not forget that Pogba helped Utd win two trophies and single handedly stopped City winning the league title whilst beating Utd. The City fans were crying on their own ground that day. For those things alone I will say 'Thank you for your service and we wish you luck in the future'. After all we aren't Liverpool fans are we. We don't boo

According to the BBC website possession was 67-33. I did a double take when I saw this report showing 50-50. I'd like to see the stats for Fred - my memory may well be at fault but I can't remember him mis-placing a pass all game.

United finally seem to have re-discovered their mojo. OK - it was only against the Belgian league leaders, but considering they scored two goals away to Real Madrid and might have scored first last night had Rits had more composure when it was still 0-0, this was an impressive and dominant United display. People forget that before he got injured Bailly was a world class centre back and so if he can stay fit then United should continue to concede a lot less goals than they did last season - which is what cost them 4th place as much as anything else. I'm beginning to think Romero is a better fit for this team than De

Gea.

I guess the big question is - will Pogba stay or go in the summer. While it would be tantalising to see him in a team with Fernandes, Martial, Rashford, Greenwood, McTominay and Fred, I suspect the move is already lined up and United probably should move on and accept that he is not the right world class player for them. 90 million is what I expect Real or Juventus to be asked to pay but a player exchange may also be part of that. Anyway, as a neutral and above all FOOTBALL FAN I hope that United are on the upward trajectory after 4 or 5 seasons of relative mediocrity with occasional flashes of brilliance.

There were some very positive points tonight that seem to have confirmed a (first of the season) good run... (1) an exciting and entertaining game,

(2) good goals,

(3) another fine performance from catalyst Fernandez Happy for all the goal scorers, but it is a shame that Daniel James excellent strike, resulting in the penalty, was not actually a goal instead. The young James will grow but he does need a little luck. Overall a refreshing new wind blows through OT and may United continue to develop their game for the rest of the season and give fans more to sing about. Happy for OGS, happy for us all.
