Ryan Kent celebrates with Florian Kamberi after scoring for Rangers in their Europa League last-32 second leg against Sporting Braga. Photograph: Octavio Passos/Getty Images Steven Gerrard hopes Ryan Kent will get a Braga boost after his winner fired Rangers into the last 16 of the Europa League.
Kent has struggled to justify his £7m fee amid Rangers’ winter slump. But the former Liverpool winger has gone some way to repaying that sum after securing a £925,000 windfall for the club with the only goal at the Estadio Municipal. Rangers should have extended the 3-2 lead with which they travelled to Portugal during the first half but wasted three chances – with Ianis Hagi becoming their fourth player this season to miss a penalty. But Kent sealed Rangers’ place in the draw on Friday 16 minutes after the break to send the 5,000 fans who had journeyed from Scotland wild and now Gerrard hopes it will help the Englishman return to hisbest.
“Ryan is a player that we need that level of contribution from,” Gerrard said. “There have been a lot of opinions on Ryan of late on what type of form he is in. But he delivered a big moment for us and he could have had two. “He was disappointed with the big chance he had in the first half. But I am really happy with him and I don’t just judge him on numbers. I judge him on what he is doing for the team – in and out of possession. People don’t give him the credit he deserves in terms of the amount of running he does for us – but he came big for the team and scored the important goal. “Hopefully this will do his confidence the world of good because there will be times when people aren’t happy with him and it’s a little bit up and down. That is part of being a footballer at a top club. But some of the opinions I have been reading of late on Ryan are ludicrous. He’s a top player.” Gerrard dropped a surprise an hour before kick-off when it was announced George Edmundson would partner Connor Goldson at the heart of his defence, with the out-of-form Nikola Katic dropped to the bench after the St Johnstone horror showon Sunday.
THE FIVER: THE GUARDIAN'S TAKE ON THE WORLD OF FOOTBALLRead more
It was a major call, with the young Englishman untested against top-level opposition but he stood up to the task as he and Goldsonstood firm.
Gerrard said: “The partnership of the two centre-backswas faultless. George was thrown in at the deep end but there’s one way to get European experience. “At some point a manager has got to trust you to go in, whatever the challenge is. He stepped up and he fancied it and he delivered with the help of Connor, who played like a captain, like a leader. He is someone who has had some stick since the weekend, along with the rest of us, so to bounce back and post that type of performance was great. “We played against high-class opposition, a very dangerous opponent, who are in probably the best form they’ve been in for some time. The players have been outstanding to a man over both games. I’m really proud of them for getting the job done.” Rangers have missed six of their 10 spot-kicks this season but Gerrard never doubted his team could pull through against Ruben Amorim’s side. “Moments like those can play on your mind but the game panned out like we thought it would. We could have scored two more and the tie could have been done at half‑time had we been more clinical. I still had confidence then that moments would come. “I won’t be disrespectful to Braga. They have beaten Porto in a cup final, beaten Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Wolves. High-class opposition. A team that hadn’t been beaten under their new manager – and we have beaten them twice in a week.”MATCH STATS

It is remarkable what happens when -there is a decent referee -there is a decent playing surface -there is a distinct lack of hammermen in the ranks of the opposition A game of football takes place, and the better side wins.Reply

Congratulations to Rangers, and good luck to the Celts tonight. The Europa League is a cool little techno club full of slightly ugly people high on research chemicals. It's situated in the alley behind the Champions League meat market with its table-service, coke, £1000 bottles of champagne and surgically enhanced stunners whose too-white teeth are terrifing when you get close up.Reply

Great result for Rangers, hopefully the Hoops can join them tonight. We would then be 2 matches away from having 2 Scottish teams in the same European quarter finals. When was the last time that happened?. It would be quite an achievement and a great boost to the SPFL.Reply

sporting sevco really hit the jackpot with this result- might they now be able to buy one or two of the glory hunters back now with this money? Word is, Claudio reynas 45 year old severed left foot might be available for a loan move with this money, and Sergio porrinis squash ball could also be got on a free. It's enough to make you want to once again pretend to believe in a god that doesn't exist, just so that you can carry on a pointless vendetta well into the 21st century. Good work you slippy liverpudlianReply

Pleasantly surprised by this Rangers performance but Europe seems to bring out the best in them. Hopefully Celtic will progress too as we Scots need all the excitement we can get these days given the domestic scene is pretty dull fayre.Reply

Thinking back to last Thursday, 2 nil down, getting totally dominated. Who would have believed we would go on to win that game and beat Braga at their home ground the following week?Virtually no one.
What a magnificent result. Really looking forward to see who we get inthe next round.
Let's hope we keep the winning formula and take it onto tynecastle.Reply

This conforms that Scottish football is at the top table of world soccer. We should have no worries going up against Barcelona, Man City or Juve and would easily challenge for the premiership if given the chance. But English clubs are running scared and do not want to give away their power and money.Reply

League 2 standard a bit harsh on wolves? Good chance of an English team playing at Ibrox or Parkhead in thenext round
Be good for the english fans to experience the noise and passion that their billion dollar league is devoid of.Reply

Hmm, you would think. But does that give us more slots in the Europa League? My fear is the gruesome twosome will just move further and further ahead of everyone else moneywise. Of course there is always the chance that TRFC will end up in liquidation again whilst in the search of glory/bettering CelticReply

Happy days. Outstanding result. Did not see that one coming. Our European performances this season have been fantastic, knocking out some top notch teams. jack great tonight in particular but everyone put in a strong shift. Cracking goal from Kent and the assist fromHagi.
Gerrard got his tactics and line up spot on again too albeit Braga didn’t really change things up. Hoping boyces tonsils stay sore for a few more days...Reply

Too many missed chances, but a good result for Scottish football all the same. Gerrad is great tactical wise, but there is still no cutting edge. Haji could change that perhaps, but too early, bad luck with a goodish, but not great penalty.Reply

Problem for a plan b is the squad is very limited. Although the comeback in the previous game was excellent. There ae not enough goals in the team and too few players capable of scoring semi regularly. If Morellos is not scoring or being an arse then who else. He also fails to deliver quality in terms of assists. See the 2 poor balls that would have given Kent a brace in the firstleg.
Defo has failed to be a super sub that I expected and is now injured. It will take abit of time for Gerrard to clear out those not up to it. Or dont have the bottle. Develop others. But so far in Europe it has been excellent.Reply

Rangers done well tonight and credit to the back four and the manager, got the tactics right and did that without our best player. Surprised Braga beat wolves twice based on how they played against us= thats not anywhere near as well as we have played and we missed some amount of chances over the two legs. Lets have as easy a draw as possible now and save the big guns for the quarters..... Having said that i wouldntmind Man U
