Lucas Tousart celebrates his goal in Lyon’s 1-0 Champions League last-16 victory over Juventus. Photograph: Philippe Desmazes/AFP via Getty Images Juventus’s hopes of reaching the Champions Leaguelast eight
suffered a blow when the Italian champions slumped to a 1-0 defeat in their last-16 first leg at Lyon. Midfielder Lucas Tousart scored the only goal on 31 minutes to give Lyon, who are bidding to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, a deserved win. It was Lyon’s first victory over Juventus, and Juventus’s
first defeat in the competition this season. The Serie A leaders lacked quality, with Cristiano Ronaldo rarely getting into scoring positions, and they will need to improve in the return leg on 17 March if they are to progress. Around 2,700 Juventus fans travelled from Piedmont, a region neighbouring the coronavirus-hit Lombardy, as the game went ahead as planned despite concern over the virus. On the pitch, Lyon were at their best, with Houssem Aouar and new signing Bruno Guimarães inspiring their team. “We were not the favourites and rightfully so, but we believed that we could unsettle Juventus,” said the midfielder Aouar. “But let’s not get carried away, there’s one full game left.” Juventus have only won four of their last eight competitive matches and their captain Leonardo Bonucci said his team had improved. “We messed up our first half, sometimes it happens,” he said. “We gifted one half and they scored at a moment when they were good athurting us.”
After a cagey start, Lyon made a clear chance when Karl Toko-Ekambi’s header at the near post from Aouar’s corner hit the crossbar. Aouar then burst into the area and delivered a cutback that Tousart placed into the top corner from close range to put the Frenchside ahead.
Juventus were at the time down to 10 men as Matthijs de Ligt was getting treatment for blood on his head after being accidentally stamped on by his teammate Alex Sandro. The visitors threatened through Ronaldo but he shot just wide at the end of a counterattack with Juve looking short on confidence. The Italian side upped the pressure after the interval as Lyon sat back and hoped to hurt Maurizio Sarri’s team on the break. Paulo Dybala went close for Juve with a volley, the substitute Gonzalo Higuaín wasted a couple of chances and Dybala had a goal ruled out for offside as Lyon held firm.MATCH STATS

We have been playing poor football for most the season. Other than Ronaldo scoring plentifully, Dybala performing well in his often changing roles and some signs of welcome development from Bentancur (almost in spite of the varied roles and stop start runs in the side) there has been stagnation all across the side under Sarri. There is no obvious tactical identity. We are in late February and only of late has he moved Ramsey and Juan to their nat…Jump to comment

Great result for Lyon. Before this they had drawn 7 out of their last 8 home games in the Champions League so have been tough to beat. They have a good young team and if they can hold on to their players (unlikely) then they certainly have a bright future. I suspect the second leg will be another story but I will be cheering on the LesGones.

Unless Juventus get rid of Sarri they will end up potless this season for the first time in - what would it be, ten years? Sticking rigidly to his preconceived system’ is making them too wooden and predictable. When they get results, they can be chalked up to the muscle memory of great individuals, eg Dybala’s free-kick goal the other week. As a team, they are all too audibly creaking. Bonucci’s post-match comments, about the lack of cohesion, we…Jump to comment

Here's an article I recently read which I thought was pretty accurate and funny because it was such a rant. A little over the top, but direct (even if the writer Padovan is no fan of Juve) and an accurate reflection of what some of the Italian press think of Sarri's Juveright now.
The opponent is ridiculous and is led by a manager like Rudi Garcia who in his career has never won anything, and has only and always disappointed. And what's more this band of fakers, comedians, and time wasters will arrive at the stadium in Torino (possibly still closed for Coronavirus) to park the bus and seek a complicit referee like the shameless Gil Manzano who denied a penalty and a half (on Ronaldo and especially Dybala) and permitted the French team to hack without any yellow cards. Juventus however did not lose because of this. Juventus lost because it is a team made of small players, hyped up by a complicit and self satisfied environment, with a manager (Maurizio Sarri) still (and possibly totally) inadequate to the demands ofEuropean football.
Had this been the only problem perhaps Juve could have saved its hide, but if we add the non-performance of the over hyped Bentancur (Paratici is recounting the joke that Barcelona wants him), Pjanic, memorable only for a marvelous assist to Ekambi, with the collaboration of the superego Bonucci and of Alex Sandro we reach the conclusion that this Juventus is a colossal bluff - capable of - as I write regularly - losing against anyone, even the 7th place team inthe French league.

Juventus are woeful right now. What happened to the team that looked so promising early in the season when Douglas Costa looked invincible. The midfield is useless and Rabiot is weak and lily livered. He never plays the ball forward. Generally speaking, I'd rather watch Atalanta play these days a million times more.Reply

I confess that my only exposure to Italian football comes from CL games, and the odd game here and there. Can someone who watches the league tell me if Inter are a better squad this year than Juve? Inter certainly looked good versus my Dortmund and Barcelona, and Juve seem to be riding Ronaldo's shoulders. Is that accurate?Reply

Yes and no. Juventus have really fallen off in the last month or two. Really really poor. No one is running, the team is very static, the midfield are woeful and predictable. That said, Juventus are still capable of pulling it together though so who knows. In the last two months they have lost to: Napoli, Lazio, and Verona, and barely beat Spal, and tied Milan. On the way there were a few convincing performances but the whole team seems tired, stale, and unmotivated. Maybe the return of Chiellini and Costa will spur something but they are very unconvincing.Reply

Juventus have a habit of winning games when it matters. What does worry me is their slow ball circulation. Lyon is a good team, but not a topteam, who now could upset Juventus if it fails to shift gears.Reply

True, but there's a culture of winning there in the Bayern style. They know they're good, they've got a lot of know-how and they're used to success. It creates an air of inevitability, at least domestically. We saw this in the Bundesliga last season, and in Serie A when Sarri's Napoli were _this_ close. It hasn't generally been quite enough in Europe against the super-elite, especially for Juve. But it's still kicked in at certain points, such as in Juve's second leg against Atlético last season. You can't rule them out until the final whistle.Reply

Anyone who understand how the system works these days should not be surprised about these results. When keys players are benched, you should know that something is on the offering. On paper Manchester City cannot beat even a depleted Real Madrid team at home or away nor can Lyon beat Juventus at either away or home. From Manchester City’s two away goals advantage, Real Madrid could come and win at away by a lone goal or draw 0.0. Then Manchester City will go to the next round. The same could apply to Juventus who are well known. These days, Italian clubs just do not want to win trophies but just take the money. On the other hand, Chelsea will beat Bayern Munich at next away match by a lone goal and Bayern will go through to the next round on 3.1 aggregate. As it is, if the current China virus does halt the tournament, it appears it will be Bayern Munich and Barcelona final. As the German football have had enough of self docility or forced docility, Bayern Munich will be in the final.Reply

another horror show of a performance from Juve. Lyon played well but they looked poor at best in terms of quality with the exception of their midfielders. Their defence was not tested and nor was the keeper which is especially frustrating from the Juve perspective. People rightfully moan about Sarri but the players are the ones playing and some of them appear to have forgotten how to pass the ball. It is all so slow. Sarri was brilliant at Napoli because they played quickly. One and two touch football, passing and moving and the full-backs bombing on to create overloads everywhere whilst they played beautiful intricate football. Alex Sandro looks exhausted and came back inside almost every time he had the ball yesterday, Danilo....well don't get me started. Rabiot could have played us into a goal scoring position early on in the match but his pass was woeful! Ronaldo tries as usual but often overdoes it to the detriment of the team. My biggest concern is the form of Pjanic. As soon as he receives the ball everything stops. He has not played the quick ball Sarri wants or even Allegri wanted. The turnover is no longer a weapon because the midfield has the dynamism of a tractor and everything just slows right down and goes backwards and side to side. When Higuain came on he brought some energy. Dybala was trying but again had a poor night. I thought Ramsey did well and when Bentancur moved into Pjanic's position his energy made a difference. All in all, we were utterly abject. I have not yet cancelled my Istanbul bookings for the final but even if we get through after the second leg we lack the squad depth, and probably the full backs and midfield to challenge in the semi's let alone win a final! Painful viewing!Reply

The lack of movement off of the ball and the time it takes for anyone to pass the ball is driving me insane. I’m not entirely happy with the midfield but they are capable of more than this garbage. I was hoping that Sarri would improve the speed of play. Unfortunately, so many of Juve’s matches this seeing are just as bad as the worst moments under Allegri. It was a mistake to allocate so much of the budget. Nothing that has been achieved with him couldn’t have been achieved without him. The squad needs rejuvenation. We probably missed out an Haland because of Ronaldo. I’m just hoping it doesn’t get worse before the summer. Also hoping Agnelli pulls his head out of his ass. His recent decisions are alarming.Reply

Cancel the booking...(and I'm a big Juve fan) My remedy...pick from Ramsey, Khedira, Matuidi, Betancur. Get Chiellini and Costa back in the side.Reply

Fine pass from Aouar on Tousart's goal. "C'est Aouar, Aouar, Aouar C'est Aouar qu'il nous faut!" Should be the new French equivalent to "We're Drunk and We Know WeAre".

Sarri is a heavy smoker, a former banker, a former Napoli manager, but he's not a Juve manager or a fan favorite. He is following in Ancelotti's terrible Juventus management spree. Will he be fired athalf time?

Complement to FCMetz because Lyon barely beat them on a dodgy call that prompted a penalty and the only score in very intense and touchy affair in Lorraine, France Friday gone.Reply

Lyon were missing their best player. Surely this should've gone in Juventus' favour. Then again, that fraud Sarri is Juventus coach and they have somehow been struggling for results.Reply

Lyon played well and deserved this result. The first half was all Lyon. Lyon hammered shots from the midfield, headers corner kicks, challenging Juve's defense and the crossbar dangerously. But, more importantly, Lyon targetted Dybala smartly who was the key and ONLY player who looked dangerous around Lyon's penalty box. Higuain and Dybala played much better than Ronaldo and Dybala. The 84th-minute play from Dybala to Higuain was possibly the best chance for Juve towin the game.

As much as I respect Ronaldo, this game shows that perhaps he doesn't fit in with Sarri's football or he's reached his climax and on his way to retirement. I want to believe in Sarri's football philosophy, but he needs to be more flexible. The elbow from Marcelo to Dybala should have been possibly red-carded. He purposely turned back and struck up his elbow and caught Dybala in his face. The goal scene was bad communication and terrible defense by Pjanic who hasn't performed well recently. Pjanic should have gone to pressure but he instead went backward giving space and time to pass. The goal scene was a good play by Lyon, but the Juve midfield and defense had so much space in between them giving Dembele so much space to play. This is my analysis of this game. To Allianz bianconeri!Reply
