Griezmann celebrates his equaliser in Naples. Photograph: Tullio Puglia - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images Antoine Griezmann’s equaliser cancelled out a fine opener from Napoli’s Dries Mertens to give Barcelona a 1-1 draw and the upper hand in their Champions Leaguelast-16 tie.
Mertens had made the most of the Italian club’s solid start to curl home an effort after 30 minutes. However, after the midfielder was forced off with injury following a heavy challenge from SergioBusquets, Barcelona
drew level when Griezmann lashed the ball in from close range. BAYERN MUNICH AND GNABRY DRIVE CHELSEA TOWARDS CHAMPIONS LEAGUE EXITRead more
Barça finished with 10 men after Arturo Vidal was shown two quick yellow cards for a tackle on Mário Rui and then pushing his head into the face of the Napoli man during the closing stages. “It’s a positive result for us overall,” said the Barcelona coach, Quique Setien. “We controlled most of the game, but we lacked something in the final third against such an organised defence byNapoli.
“After the equaliser, they opened up a little and we were able to hurt them more. They played very well and it was not easy, so a score draw is fine going into the second leg.” Lionel Messi, who scored four goals in the 5-0 win over Eibar which put Barcelona top of LaLiga, sent an early chance over before Napoli made a breakaway count as Mertens swept them in front. Piot Zielinski won possession from Junior Firpo and charged down the right before cutting the ball across the edge of the Barcelona area, Mertens took a touch before curling a wonderful finish over a static Marc André ter Stegen and into the top corner – a goal which made the Belgian Napoli’s joint record scorer, level on 121 goals with Marek Hamsik.from close range.
Napoli, who finished second in Group E behind Liverpool, soon threatened again. Their captain, Lorenzo Insigne, weaved his way into the left of the Barça area and forced Ter Stegen into a low save. The German was alert again to come off his line and block from Callejon. At the other end Messi looked to get on the end of an exchange with Vidal and collided with Ospina as the Napoli keeper made a brave save, which saw both players need treatment. Samuel Umtiti headed over a corner from Messi before Vidal saw red, meaning he will be suspended for the return at the Camp Nou next month. The Barça defender Gerard Piqué also limped off during stoppage time with what looked like an ankle problem. Napoli’s coach Gennaro Gattuso felt his side had missed an opportunity to give themselves more of a foothold in the tie. “Barcelona struggled because we were very careful. We did well as a team to play together like this,” he said. “I am disappointed because we made one mistake and they made the most of it. We suffered tonight, tactically we were almost perfect, but we could have done better and been more clinical.”MATCH STATS

Given Barcelona’s record for knockout matches in Italy — not good — a scored draw would be considered a very good result for them, if not for the asterisks, meaning those pesky yellow cards that have their two most important midfielders missing the return leg. And given furthermore that not conceding at home is primordial, I’d say Busquets will be the bigger miss, in spite of a couple of giveaways tonight that could have been disastrous. The team performance especially in the first half exposed their biggest weakness under Setién, i.e. their inability to rattle teams that set in a medium-low block, closing all spaces while waiting patiently for loosely played balls to trigger their counter. More often than not, the resulting chances aren’t exploited in La Liga, but that’s because finishers of the class of Dries Mertens hardly abound there. (I can’t believe De Laurentiis is willing to let Mertens walk away this summer.) Considering that whatever little verticality Barcelona had tonight came from Vidal, I’m tempted to argue with myself that he’ll be missed more than Busquets. When I further notice that Barcelona won a single corner kick in the match, in the 75th minute, I feel myself losing that argument. Speaking of which, Napoli won two corners, with the first in the 85th minute. They came as a result of their decision to turn on the high press late in the match after Barcelona leveled. This high press will be a severe test for the Barcelona midfield at the Camp Nou. Oh, I think I’m winning the argument again. Anyway, good to finally see a Barcelona No. 9 scoring away in the CL. Here’s hoping this gives a boost to Griezmann’s confidence.Reply

Another poor away performance from Barca. Dreadful first half. Napoli played well and second half put on some good pressure. Vidal was foolish by getting 2 yellows, seconds apart. Barca are going to struggle to field a full subs bench at this rate and Pique will be a worry for the Classico.Reply

Bayern were playing an injury riddled and quite young and inexperienced Chelsea, whereas Barca were playing a strong Napoli in quite a tough venue. I think if Bayern played Barca it would be tight.Reply

Thinking the same myself whenever I switched over to the game. Some years ago when Barcelona remorsely played Tiki-taka they had a philosophical excuse for being tedious but lately as that particular era is thankfully grinding down the gears one would have expected there would be a simultaneous increase in the velocity of the play. Sadly this does not seem to be the case. Busquet the Cynic missing from the second leg might improve matters.Reply

TaxmanCometh reliably shows up in all and any Barcelona-related comment sections and says something negative about Barcelona. It's kind of a hobby of his (or hers, though I suspect him). Reading a post where he also says something negative about the other team is actuallyalmost refreshing.

Well, I had nothing particular against Barcelona until they decided there was not a single player in their squad, the squad of their B team, of their youth team who is capable of playing games and so had to go and pilfer a striker from a team struggling against relegation. A team who was, of course, not given the same chance to sign areplacement.
I know Barcelona broke no rules here. But to be honest I would harbor dislike for any team who behaved like this. So yes I hope they lose against Napoli, and do not win La Liga. No idea what the OP has against Napoli.Reply

A cautious performance by Napoli, who are still convalescing from the sickening months of November and December; the team can be incredibly inconsistent, having beaten Juventus, Lazio and Inter (the top three Italian teams this season) in the last three weeks, as well as Liverpool in the qualifying UCL stages to then lose at home to lowly Lecce just a few weeks ago. A pattern is emerging though: Napoli play fantastic away football, and so the return leg at the Camp Nou promises to be quite an event.Reply

Wow, that was hard to watch. In the first half I couldn’t see Barça’s structre at all until I realized that they basically didn’t have one. I love Busquets but I feel we are now seeing a pale imitation of an older version. He was never fast but his legs have completely gone now and why he was playing at times up front is a total mystery to me. Rakitic was generally awful and de jong went missing but the true champion of awfulness goes to Firpo who was lamentable - bad decision after bad decision. Messi is obviously a genius but the guy was isolated - his own team were just standing around, open-mouthed watching him trying to battle his way through 4 players. Napoli are not out of this yet...Reply

This match (at least the first half ) mirrrored to a large extent the Liverpool v Atletico match. For all of 45 minutes Barcelona had the possession but failed to take a single shot on goal , meanwhile Napoli parked the bus and on the counter scored a beauty of a goal from Merhtens. Breaking down teams that can defend very well is extremely hard and Napoli even without Koubilaye did a great job in the 1st half. If Messi cannot prise open such a defence than it shows how hard it it is for teams like Barcelona and Liverpool to break down such teams. Alas all the hard work of Napoli in the 1st half came undone when the Barcelona full back exploited space down the flank and punished them for this lapse. That changed the game forcing Napoli to come out to chase for another goal - they never got this and although 1-1 places the tie in Barcelona's favour they (Napoli ) are not entirely out of it . a 1-1 draw in the Nou camp will lead to penalty kicks. All stillto play for here.

I noticed the similarities too. Sterile possession against disciplined opposition isn't likely to be very effective I do wonder if Semedo will be played on the left instead of Firpo in the next leg as he really doesn't offer much in attack and is wobblydefensively too.
Busquete and Vidal will be big losses. Fati will need to play now, unless they play Roberto as a forward. Though it might mean de Jong will play a bit deeper and since Napoli will need to attack a bit more, there will be space for him to drive into.Reply

I was fuming at the idiot on TV who was pretending that Vidal was going to play on the right side of Barca's attack when I realized it was true... How you come there with the highest wage bill in the world is a bit of a mystery to me, but it was enough for a good result.Reply

Ha, thanks. I refuse to talk about the construction of Barcelona'ssquad.
Okay, I'll just mention one thing. A couple of days after Messi said in a recent interview that he didn't think that Barcelona had the squad to win the Champions League this year, sporting secretary Eric Abidal said in an interview that he thought Barcelona had the squad to win the Champions League this year. I'll just leave it at that.Reply

Barca keep playing vulgar football. Nothing changed, they continue in the same way. Tedious, slow, with an insufficient intensity. Again 11 km less run then the rival, which is the inheritance of poor training (too many days off and when training with low intensity) under Valverde. Only the thuggisness of Barca players kept Napoli at bay. 5 yellow cards and one red. Busquets and Vidal cannot play the second leg (which is better as they will be able to play in the quaterfinals where Barca will edge) and Messi and Griezmann, the only two dangerous scorers in the team as just one yellow from the santion (which is muchmore troubling).
A fair result which virtually qualifies Barca as they are still quite strong at Camp Nou. But it was against the second weakest opponent remaining in the last 16 draw after Lyon. Unless Barca get Atalanta or winner between Leipzig and Tottenham, they have no chance to progressto the semifinals.
Messi must do much more, this is really not enough. Very passive. Junior Firpo is the most useful when he is injured. Whenever he has the ball, Barca tremble. He caused the goal and overal was a disaster as almost always. He is worse than Mathieu - as poor as him technically and tactically, but slower and weaker. Griezmann delivered, he scored an away UCL goal for which Luis Suárez has been waiting since September 2015.Reply

I partially agree with you. "Vulgar" seems a bit strong, "apathetic" is more like it in my opinion, though off the ball Barça were actually better for large parts of the game than on the ball. Don't see a lot that was "thuggish", certainly not about Messi's yellow (tried to score, miscalculated, immediately apologized) or Busquet's (stupid but also going for the ball). Griezmann's was just a run-of-the-mill tactical foul, though of course an obvious yellow. And Vidal was less thuggish than almost comically moronic. Well deserved red. Also, having run less is also related to having the ball (much) more. Agree on Firpo. Not sure about what weakest side after Lyon, having seen highlights of the Chelsea-Bayern game...Reply

What is the point of Frenkie de Jong in this system? Spent the whole game running away from the ball, putting himself in useless positions with his back to goal and doing his best to make passing to him impossible. Think he touched the ball about 4 times, tolittle effect.
Why wasn't he in midfield, facing forwards?Reply

Not a great game, obviously, maybe a fair result. When Barça equalized, apart from waiting for VAR to confirm Semedo was onside, it was simply a relief for me as a fan, and nothing more giddy than that. It's debatable whether or not Barcelona actually deserved to score at that point, but Napoli _so_ deserved to concede. 11 men behind the ball at 0-0, and like 15 men behind the ball after an individual mistake well preyed upon (rather than anything resembling a coherent move in midfield) gave them the lead. And because I watch Barça on a weekly basis in La Liga, I'm happy to report that this is not how you "have to play against them" - lesser teams than Napoli - teams whose entire squads would cost less than not only Messi but less than Dries Mertens - have been giving Barcelona's slow and error-prone defense trouble all season by playing a high press, refusing to hand over the midfield and going for the ball. So I'm kind of glad my team got that away goal against opposition whose pretty recent victory against Liverpool, having watched today's match, now mystifies me. Hope the 2nd leg will be more entertaining, and should be interesting to watch how Napoli react to the challenge of actually having to score.Reply

> So I'm kind of glad my team got that away goal against opposition > whose pretty recent victory against Liverpool, having watched > today's match, now mystifies me. Why should it mystify you ? It was exactly the same tactics in both matches when Napoli played Liverpool and at home - the one they won they sat deep , did nothing of note and scored against the run of play . Liverool then chased the game and on Napoli scored a second goal . If Napoli have Merhten on the pitch he is deadly enough to trouble any defence and with Koubilaye (missing today ) and Manolas in defence they are hard to break down. Expect the same when they come to play you at home . This tie isn't over by a long chalk.Reply

You gotta feel a little sorry for Setien; a second division manager totally out of his depth at Barsa; he couldn't have turned it down of course, but what were they thinking Even if they manage to scrape past Napoli, not obvious as the Italian side will scent blood after having been better today, they'd need massive favors to go any further in Europe - So question is whether they have enough to fight off Madrid for the league; it doesn't look so right now - Madrid, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Athletic, Celta, Atletico, Villareal coming up in the next 2 months Maybe Dembele will come back and have a sensational season next year, and maybe Dejong will come good (he was the standout worse player on the pitch tonight), and several Masia players (?) will follow in the footsteps of eh Bojan and have an impact in the regular starting eleven, but isn't it quite likely that next season it will be Alba, Pique, Sergi Roberto, Busquets, Messi, Suarez, and more of the same?Reply

Remember that Simpson's episode where Homer's brother told his employee to say the exact opposite of everything he meant when he was on the phone with Homer? I really got that feeling reading yourcomment.
Napoli weren't better today. In patches, yes, but not through the whole match. Towards the end they were decidedly worse. De Jong, much as I love him and have high hopes for him, was not the standout player tonight, at least not in a good way. And Real Madrid also has to play some of the teams you listed in the coming weeks (same league, innit?), and I think you'll find the last couple seasons for both FCB and RM, it's the least likely matches that bring them down in the end, so looking at schedules doesn't amount tomuch.

It's lucky for Barcelona that they got to sign Braithwaite because obviously it's unfair to ask a team to compete in the CL with only Messi and Griezmann. Sorry, but it's impossible to sympathize with the culés at this point. The team is dreadful, and what the club stands for seems to be increasingly sketchy.Reply

Barcelona start with 4 traditionally deep lying central midfielders and only two attacking forwards. Been a long time since I've seenthat.
With Braithwaite unfairly taken from Leganes in January but only available for La Liga it might not be the last time. Unless they go out at the Nou Camp. Napoli are in a good place last month or so and are capable of it.Reply

the team are not fit enough to play 4-4-3...they are getting older and slower, specially Busquets as it was shown yesterday. With a 4-4-2 at least they have some sort of contention in the midfield. What is really alarming for me is the low performance of Frenkie De Jong, a shadow of his former self at Ajax.Reply

When I read the Fiver and they predicted a 1-1 draw in this game, I thought, that's not what I'm hoping for, but I'd be happy with that. But after the match I just feel down. Alba, Roberto, Suarez, Dembélé, maybe now Pique out injured. Busquets and Vidal out for the next match. It's hard to feel hopeful. And as much as I tried to construct this as "if only the board hadn't sent him away..." it stilldoesn't work.
I was really hoping they'd play Vidal today, and still glad that they did. But Barcelona without Vidal or Suarez is ... sighReply
