Diogo Jota
celebrates scoring his side’s second goal. Photograph: Nick Potts/PA This was so easy for Wolves, it bordered on the surreal. Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad have been playing twice a week for as long as Boris Johnson has been the prime minister. Someone should be buying them a break in Mustique but still they plough on and they had too much strength, too much determination (never mind technique and guile), for a Norwich side so desperate for points at the bottom. Two goals for Diogo Jota, following a Europa league hat-trick inmidweek
,
were complemented by a second half effort from Raúl Jiménez, his 12th league goal of a sparkling campaign. But it could and should have been more and the gulf between the two teams on the day– only a week after Norwich held their own against Liverpool – was as great as you are likely to see this season. BRUNO FERNANDES OPENS MANCHESTER UNITED ACCOUNT IN WIN OVER WATFORDRead more
“I think it was a good performance”, said Nuno, undercooking it somewhat. “We played on Thursday and it was the same boys and our game requires a lot of running. I think we run more than the opposite team and that requires a lot of energy.” The hosts were fresh from a 4-0 mauling of Espanyol on Thursday night, in all senses of the phrase. It should not be that way: most teams – and those more celebrated than Wolves – have struggled with the Europa League calendar. But Wolves have not only avoided mid-season burnout, they have grown into the gruelling demands. And 10 of the 11 who beat the Spaniards started again against Norwich, some effectively starting a second season of matches. Conor Coady, for example, was making his 43rd appearance of the campaign, Jiménez and Leander Dendoncker their 42nd. With 11 games to go they remain in the hunt for the Champions League, five points behind Chelsea in fourth. “It’s the way they recover, the way they respect themselves” said Nuno, asked to explain the secret behind his players’ endurance. “It’s also the way the staff dedicate. We don’t have days off. We’re always preparing ourselves to compete. We want to compete. The difficulty is to sustain that, every day is harder thanthe last.”
Norwich began the game the better side and might have scored had they shown greater intent. Afterwards, Daniel Farke accused his attacking players of lacking the necessary “physicality and body tension” to cut through against well drilled opponents. It was a kind way of saying that his players, faced by Willy Boly and Romain Saïss, had bottled it. The Canaries have now gone 536 minutes without a goal from open play and Farke continued: “You have to give your life with each and every duel and I got the feeling that sometimes we were a bit softand scared.”
After shaking off their cobwebs Wolves began to find their bite, led by the irrepressible Jota. A renowned runner with the ball his opening goal in the 19th minute was the work of a poacher. Matt Doherty began the move, getting the better of Jamal Lewis on the right touchline, and got to the box to provide the assist by poking the ball to Jota. Norwich had six men in the box against two but Jota duly span past Max Aarons and drove a low shot through the legs of Tim Krul.MATCH STATS

It's certainly true that given our small squad and huge numbers of games played so far our current position is a minor miracle. This is down to Nuno and the regime the players are subjected to. They train hard and they rest properly. Perhaps more importantly though they are a truly close bunch of players free of the egos that often fracture top flight dressing rooms. This hasn't happened by chance. The recruitment policy has been a masterclass in strategic thinking. It bodes very well for our long-term success, maybe short-term too. A top 6 finish or Europa League final wouldn't be bad!Reply

I’m not able to get to matches, so I’d be interested to hear what Norwich supporters make of Duda and Rupp. Are they much of an upgrade on the players we already had? I always liked Stiepermann and Vrancic, but they rarely get a game these days.Reply

I never was lucky enough to see the Great Wolverhampton Wanderers side of the 50's. I was bought up on names like Billy Wright, Johnny Hancocks, Peter Broadbent amongst many others. The Old Gold of the 50's has been a distant dream, all now in heaven. Now, under FOSUN, Nuno Espirito Santos, we are blessed to see Ruben Neves, Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore, Neto, Coady, Boly , Jota and many others. I never sort I'd see it, but these players are gracing football pitches all over. I am sure these players will be remembered in many years to come.Reply

A fifth goal in 72 hours for the sublime jota was a jhoy to see. I never felt we would lose today. And with jiminez and traore i think we have 3 guys who can shoot us into the top 4. Amazing times for wolvesfans.

We’ve prepared for relegation with our signings in January and we’ll lose some of our stars, but hey had we had another season in the Championship we wouldn’t be financially better off like we are now.Daniel and Stuart have done a fabulous job, we need the project to continue and not make the mistake of changing manager when we getrelegated.

Considering what you spent (or rather, didn’t) in the off-season, it would seem that was the plan all along. Delia looking for a second promotion bonanza, perhaps? Either way, I’d be pissed off were I a Norwich fan. And as a long-suffering Wolves fan, I can relate to your plight. I can’t see you escaping the drop this season which is unfortunate because you play attractive football. But you need to keep DF if you’re to bounce back...and give him a decent transfer kitty. As for my lads, what a week! N. London prepare thyself!Onwards & upwards.

That was lovely stuff from Wolves. Nice to see doc involved in the game. I've got the feeling he doesn't combine well with Traore, and that it's Traore to blame.A perfect win.
Norwich were looking dangerous in the first 15, if it wasnt' for their dodgy defense they'd be in a much better position.Reply

Ok so this was a shocking day at the office for Norwich (so far as I can tell). It seems that they got what they deserved. It could be that some of the Norwich players are beginning to believe the press hype about how they are on the radar of Liverpool, Man Utd and others. More like Blackpool, Colchester Utd and Division 1.Reply

He certainly didn't and I gather from David Freezer's post match assessment that without acknowledging the away support at the end, he buggered off down the tunnel. He still has a lot to learn. All four have creative potential and should make progress playing in better sides, you'd have struggled to see that today but they have all looked the business on a number of occasions this term. The parting of waysis imminent.

Looks like the canaries are going, shame because they play some good stuff but are just too fragile. Wolves are excellent and seem to be running into some excellent late season form. They'd fancy themselves against Spurs who look very ordinary.Reply

After a very good performance against the champions elect I was hoping for a little more today, what I saw was drivel. Playing against a team who have only had 3 days to recover from their mid week escapade I dared to dream that we could get another of those rare away victories. True to form VAR was not on our side, not that it's really on anyone's, they didn't even bother to look at Jonny standing on Max Aaron's leg, no wonder he didn't get close to stopping Jota's first. A week ago I said that we should hold out for 100 mill for the likes of Ben Godfrey, Todd Cantwell, Emi Buendia and Max, today I'd say we'd be lucky to get 50 mill for the lot. Only Tim Krul could justifiably hold his head up after that abject performance. I've given up playing Stairway to heaven, these days its Dazed and confused. Still, look on the bright side, we probably won't be playing Ipswich next season, though we do miss applauding in the 17th minute, or whenever it is, in acknowledgement of the number of years that they've played in the Championship. Now their fans I really do feel sorry for. Given that she lives near Stowmarket, I'm surprised Delia hasn't opened up a restaurant in the Suffolk capital. Well done the Wolves, you definitely have a bustle in your hedgerow and no I'm not talking aboutDarcey

These are the type of games Wolves need to win easily if they want to really challenge the 'big teams' and establish themselves as European contenders every season. Last season they failed to beat Watford, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Brighton and Crystal Palace at home. If they can continue to beat these teams lower in the table, and continue to put in the performances they do against the teams at the top of the league then they will surely become one of the 'big teams' themselves.Reply

They can't afford it. They don't have billionaire backing. If they spent £150m and got relegated, it would be ruinous. Even spending 50m would be problematic. Remember they don't get all the money upfront.
So they played it safe. They should be in a great position to go back up next season because they will be £50m or so better off than most other Championship clubs.Reply

Maybe not, but I feel we should have given Farke more. It can't cost much to borrow for less than a year with however many millions guaranteed. While there's no guarantee that it would have helped there's no guarantee that we'll clamber back. Time to open up tooutside investment.

A dispiriting performance today, partly due to the slow and predictable nature of Norwich's play and partly due to an excellent Wolves side playing well. I've got a lot of time for Daniel Farke and this group of players but this was the wrong team selection from the manager, playing into the opposition's hands.Reply

As a Wolves fan of 60 odd years I remember some really good games again Norwich in the deep past. I hope if they do go down that they don't abandon this project and keep DF. There is the basis here of an attractive footballing side but as yet it is a fragile team with aporous defence.

It's an odd one, because FWIW I think Norwich always look like a good side, and there's certainly some talent in the ranks. Looking much better on the park than Villa, for example, yet so far adrift that relegation is beginning to look inevitable. I wonder how Norwich would look had they got to spend 140 million or so?Reply
