The contest nearly began awfully for United when Nemanja Matic and Harry Maguire dithered, allowing Troy Deeney a sight of David de Gea’s goal but he fluffed the chance. “A shambles,” said Solskjær of the mix-up. United are flaky in defence because of the gap often allowed between rearguard and midfield. Sensing this, Roberto Pereyra skated forward and found Gerard Deulofeu to the left, he passed to the unmarked Abdoulaye Doucouré and the home team were lucky he could not finish. Profligacy was becoming a theme. The next to show a blunt edge was Aaron Wan-Bissaka. This time the chance came when Daniel James’s cross was parried to the right-back’s feet but he shot into the side

netting.

It was a bits-and-pieces contest that lacked a touch of class where it mattered. Even Martial wildly ballooned a 25-yard effort. At least, though, the buildup impressed: a Maguire challenge winning the ball, Fred then being fed and racing over halfway, before Martial became

involved.

At the 30-minute mark came a collector’s item: a curving Doucouré shot that De Gea had to fling himself right to save. James and Fred then added to the number of spurned opportunities: both firing over

the bar.

Then came the breakthrough via a slick James ball that slipped in Fernandes. He swerved around Ben Foster and the keeper brought him down to concede a penalty. Fernandes took this with the swagger United have missed in recent years: an odd-looking hop straight up in the air sent Foster to his right before he slotted a first goal for United. As the break approached he could and should have had a second but spooned wide from

Martial’s pass.

Still, that was Fernandes’s 13th straight penalty converted in top-flight football and neatly set up United for the second half. Yet when Luke Shaw conceded a corner disaster came close to striking when it was delivered from the right and Deeney bundled home. Yet as at Chelsea (twice) VAR saved United: Dawson was adjudged – correctly – to have elbowed the ball on to the left post before his

captain’s finish.

If this caused inevitable glee from United fans, the emotion was nearly superseded by jubilation when James – in his best display for a while – played in Greenwood. The teenager’s pivot-and-pass across Foster’s goal was inviting and Adam Masina was relieved to

clear.

What came next was a Martial special. The centre-forward had been quiet before waking to show his killer instinct. Fernandes was the craftsman, threading the ball through, and Martial the artist. When Foster blocked his initial shot the 23-year-old was in a cul-de-sac manned primarily by Étienne Capoue. Yet Martial performed a drag-back that left the Watford player a spectator before, from under Foster’s nose, he chipped a third goal from three games in the last seven days. Solskjær said: “I am delighted with the week Anthony has had. He has got his critics and I am one of the biggest. The skill for the goal is just mind-blowing.” If he trusted his left foot he might have hit Fernandes’s free-kick home for a third. Maguire, too, was gifted a golden chance – again from Fernandes – with a clear header but fluffed his big moment. United taking steps to recover the season. Signing Bruno was a stroke of genius and only down side is it wasn't done much sooner. The rest of the team have upped their game. United should never allow Pogba play for them again. same for Lingard. Get a new striker next season and a touch CDM like Partley from Atletico and we good.

Solkjaer is doing his best and whilst it's a rollercoaster ride at times, all the man exudes is positives. No moaning. There are no quick fixes. So lets look at these positives. 1 Fernandes. 2 Clean sheets. 3 5th. 4 Beat Chelsea 3 times and City twice. 5 Rashford and Mc tominy to come back into this team. 6 improvement in Shaw and Fred. 7 Exciting youth players coming through like Williams and Greenwood.8 We are in three competitions. 9 Money to spend in the summer and hopefully buy Sancho - a personal favourite - and more. 10 A Utd team with at least 4 homegrown players in it and perhaps more coming through and for all their excellence over the past few seasons City and Liverpool combined can't boast that. 11........

The results did paper over the cracks, mind you. We're still not dominant enough a force in the middle of the park to be considered a top team. Fred is improving but he's limited in his passing range and vision. Matic is not getting any better with age. McTominay will be back soon and he offers different qualities. We're sorely lacking a deep-lying playmaker like Michael Carrick who can keep the ball moving from deep. Pogba will leave this summer and I hope selling him will generate the money to buy a quality midfielder, someone like Ruben Neves. We're improving but it feels like we're still 3-4 players short of assembling a strong first XI.

Well given that two or three nailed-on starters, Rashford, Pogba and Scott McT are out, and Ole has had the summer and January windows of course the team looks 3-4 players short. I think we're about where we should be at the moment. Ole's recruitment has been very good and the criticism of Woodward has died down a bit all of a sudden. Bruno really looks like he could be a key figure but we need more reinforcements. I actually wish Chong could have got on the scoresheet yesterday as I don't want him to leave.

It's nice to have a player who is always trying to be positive. Everything Fernandes does is about getting the team in a better

position to attack.

Now to think about what might have been if we'd stumped up for him in

Paul Pogba needs to be sold ASAP. Bloke is one of the biggest expansive flop signings ever. Thinks he is better than he actually is because he used to be good in a Juventus team full of experience winners supporting him. Anything more than 55 million for him is a bonus to MUFC and Glazer pocket. There is a reason other big clubs aren't that into him. More signings like Bruno please. Ready to work for the team and

He isn't good for United- as a player he does not enhance them as a collective (despite looking good in isolation) and he definitely isn't helping the off field chemistry either. He should be sold for big money so both parties, who are equally culpable for holding each other back, can move onwards and hopefully upwards.

I don't think he was that great at the World Cup. He was mediocre in the early games, and had some classy moments in the later ones. Not so different to his United performances, in reality. For France, he has a team almost perfectly suited to him - two hard workers in midfield, and a lightning quick forward in Mbappe to hit

passes to.

In truth, he had a couple of good games at the right time, which works for a tournament but isn't enough for a tough league, or even an extended European campaign. He has talent, but he seems to need an awful lot of support to shine.

the best part about him is his desire to influence the game. When he sees an opportunity he runs beyond the striker and if he sees a numerical shortage he gets involved and puts himself about. There is very little Pogba style jogging and ball watching.

As s thought experiment..if all United players were fit, where would Pogba play? Would he even be in the first XI? He's never looked solid in a midfield two..too often dawdles and slows things down or loses the ball. Before I would have suggested no 10 but Fernandez looks more dynamic. The right attacking slot is up for grabs still, though Greenwood made a pretty decent case for it today. And hardly Pogba's forte. Kinda ironic if he ended up as an impact sub...

In the interest of the game, if you push the ball past you and fall over in the box, it should not be a penalty. You're no longer playing the ball. Its all too common in the game, and here was another example today. If you have genuine skill, then play the ball. The rest is vomit, not football.

I thought this thuggery would stop now that SAF left, but looks they still got PGMOL on their payroll having failed to reach CL by mega spending on players and hiring and firing managers !

Not sure why there's seemingly universal hatred for Pogba. He's been injured for a while. His agent has been agitating for a move, but is that his fault? In my opinion, he's mostly played well for us - with some poor games and poorer patches, but he's brought good ability to the team. I have seen no credible evidence that he is somehow a nasty person, or a bad influence, but hey ho, let's all pile on to him, since that's the current fad.

If he comes back to Old Trafford with another team in the future we give him the same reception as we give all our former players, appreciation for helping the team win trophies.
