BRUNO FERNANDES OPENS MANCHESTER UNITED ACCOUNT IN WIN OVER WATFORDJamie Jackson at

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes celebrates scoring the opening goal. Photograph: Martin Rickett/PA After a dour start this became the Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial show. Each have the quality Manchester Unitedrequire to
challenge for a Champions League place, this win lifting them up twoplaces to fifth.
Both scored while showing their teammates how to turn a contest. In the closing stages Mason Greenwood caught on, starting and finishing a move for the 11th goal of the 18-year-old’s breakthrough season, the final pass to him coming from Fernandes. It is more than a year since United have claimed three consecutive league victories and they go to Everton on Sunday searching to end this run. “I hope because there are four big league games coming up – Everton, Manchester City, Tottenham and Sheffield United,” Ole Gunnar Solskjær said. BRUNO FERNANDES VOWS TO GET UNITED INTO CHAMPIONS LEAGUERead more
The manager changed two from last Monday’s win at Chelsea – Victor Lindelöf replaced Eric Bailly and Greenwood came in for Brandon Williams – while Nigel Pearson’s only adjustment from adraw at Brighton
15 days ago was a preference for Craig Dawson in place of AdrianMariappa.
The contest nearly began awfully for United when Nemanja Matic and Harry Maguire dithered, allowing Troy Deeney a sight of David de Gea’s goal but he fluffed the chance. “A shambles,” said Solskjær of the mix-up. United are flaky in defence because of the gap often allowed between rearguard and midfield. Sensing this, Roberto Pereyra skated forward and found Gerard Deulofeu to the left, he passed to the unmarked Abdoulaye Doucouré and the home team were lucky he could not finish. Profligacy was becoming a theme. The next to show a blunt edge was Aaron Wan-Bissaka. This time the chance came when Daniel James’s cross was parried to the right-back’s feet but he shot into the sidenetting.
Images
It was a bits-and-pieces contest that lacked a touch of class where it mattered. Even Martial wildly ballooned a 25-yard effort. At least, though, the buildup impressed: a Maguire challenge winning the ball, Fred then being fed and racing over halfway, before Martial becameinvolved.
At the 30-minute mark came a collector’s item: a curving Doucouré shot that De Gea had to fling himself right to save. James and Fred then added to the number of spurned opportunities: both firing overthe bar.
Then came the breakthrough via a slick James ball that slipped in Fernandes. He swerved around Ben Foster and the keeper brought him down to concede a penalty. Fernandes took this with the swagger United have missed in recent years: an odd-looking hop straight up in the air sent Foster to his right before he slotted a first goal for United. As the break approached he could and should have had a second but spooned wide fromMartial’s pass.
Still, that was Fernandes’s 13th straight penalty converted in top-flight football and neatly set up United for the second half. Yet when Luke Shaw conceded a corner disaster came close to striking when it was delivered from the right and Deeney bundled home. Yet as at Chelsea (twice) VAR saved United: Dawson was adjudged – correctly – to have elbowed the ball on to the left post before hiscaptain’s finish.
Powell/EPA
If this caused inevitable glee from United fans, the emotion was nearly superseded by jubilation when James – in his best display for a while – played in Greenwood. The teenager’s pivot-and-pass across Foster’s goal was inviting and Adam Masina was relieved toclear.
What came next was a Martial special. The centre-forward had been quiet before waking to show his killer instinct. Fernandes was the craftsman, threading the ball through, and Martial the artist. When Foster blocked his initial shot the 23-year-old was in a cul-de-sac manned primarily by Étienne Capoue. Yet Martial performed a drag-back that left the Watford player a spectator before, from under Foster’s nose, he chipped a third goal from three games in the last seven days. DIOGO JOTA DOUBLE SEALS EASY WIN FOR WOLVES OVER NORWICHRead more
Solskjær said: “I am delighted with the week Anthony has had. He has got his critics and I am one of the biggest. The skill for the goal is just mind-blowing.” If he trusted his left foot he might have hit Fernandes’s free-kick home for a third. Maguire, too, was gifted a golden chance – again from Fernandes – with a clear header but fluffed his big moment. Yet Greenwood’s emphatic strike, pin-balling off the frame of the goal, sent United and their fans home even more content. The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email.MATCH STATS

Watford were all huff and puff in the first half gr8 effort. Still very comfortable three points @ home. Gr8 goals. Yes only three games but Burno has been embraced slight hint of le King Cantona in being a classic composed classy playmaker who makes teammates improve. What we expected Pogba would be. No real competition with multiple millions evaporated on epic fails Sanchez our worse eva. Is our best recruit since SAF left.Reply

Blimey, it's turning into a season of underperformance if this Utd can be a win off 4th place. If Utd can be this high, then it does put into context how LFC can be so far ahead, they're one of the very few fully functioning teams thisyear.

The move Martial put on the defender(s) and then the way he took his goal were both positively Berbatovian in their skill, insouciance and arrogance. Made me nostalgic for the days of Berba's patented silky languidness and cold-blooded finishing.Reply

As s thought experiment..if all United players were fit, where would Pogba play? Would he even be in the first XI? He's never looked solid in a midfield two..too often dawdles and slows things down or loses the ball. Before I would have suggested no 10 but Fernandez looks more dynamic. The right attacking slot is up for grabs still, though Greenwood made a pretty decent case for it today. And hardly Pogba's forte. Kinda ironic if he ended up as an impact sub...Reply

In the interest of the game, if you push the ball past you and fall over in the box, it should not be a penalty. You're no longer playing the ball. Its all too common in the game, and here was another example today. If you have genuine skill, then play the ball. The rest is vomit, not football.Reply

Not sure why there's seemingly universal hatred for Pogba. He's been injured for a while. His agent has been agitating for a move, but is that his fault? In my opinion, he's mostly played well for us - with some poor games and poorer patches, but he's brought good ability to the team. I have seen no credible evidence that he is somehow a nasty person, or a bad influence, but hey ho, let's all pile on to him, since that's the current fad.Reply

If Pogba wants to go then I say shake hands and depart. If he comes back to Old Trafford with another team in the future we give him the same reception as we give all our former players, appreciation for helping the team win trophies. After all we aren't the red Scouse who boo all players who left their club. We're better than that.Reply

OGS has all the hallmarks of a top manager I'd say. He's improved senior players, integrated the youth, sold some dead weight and brought in quality additions. His record against the top clubs is also fantastic. If I was a Man It's fan I'd defo be sticking with himReply

Ok fine, it's been a pretty crap season but the signing of Fernandes has really brought another element to Utd and I would now back them for CL football next season. It's not all doom and gloom as much as you'd like it to be.Reply

Fernandez is pure class. Many have already covered his outstanding technical qualities, but what I like about him the most is his attitude. Don’t sulk, doesn’t roll around on the floor after a tackle and plays with a smile and genuine enjoyment of the game. In that respect, he is the anti-Pogba. Even as a non-Man U fan, I am thrilled he’s playing in this league.Reply

You can't possibly have watched Paul Pogba if you genuinely believe this. He is a delight to watch, a pure rare talent who never sulks or rolls around. The only valid criticism of him on the field is that he can sometimes dawdle and get dispossessed and doesn't always bust a gut to get back and help defensively. But he clearly loves to play football, and creatively he does it was well as anyone. Where do you get your information?Reply

Greenwood is the future striker. I'd like to see him as center forward, Rashford on the left and Martial on the right. Give him two games like that and front line solved. I liked the lineup against Chelsea - Shaw at left back feeding and overlapping with Williams. Shaw's strength and speed to mop up when Williams gets pushed off the ball. Williams instinct to go forward andcross.

Martial cannot and won't play on the right. Stick him on the right and he will leave (as did Lukaku for preciselythat reason).

The commentary on DAZN in Canada made much of United's difficulty in bringing the ball out. But it was the lack of carrying the ball that was the issue - specifically with Lindelof There were times when MaGuire would knock the ball sideways - because he had opponents closing him down - to Lindelof who had space in front of him and Wan Bissaka wide. He could run into that space with WB as an option for a pass but such movement would also bring him closer to midfield team mates forfurther options.
But instead of moving the ball forward he stops it and stands still, looking for options. Most of the time he will knock it back to Maguire because those closing him down have moved sideways into the space that Lindelof has failed to use, freeing Maguire to receive the ball. Sometimes this gives Maguire the kind of space Lindelof had and he will use it. But if only one of the opponents closing Maguire down moves to challenge Lindelof, then neither of them have a space to confidently carry the ball into. It's so easy for opponents to do this until the ball goes back to De Gea for the big boot and a likely loss of possession.Reply

With Maguire, he lacks that acceleration to whiz through a gap. When bringing the ball forward, he is either a bit one paced or is a juggernaut running through the opposition. I’ve always said that a mobile DM brings the best out of Maguire, and Fred’s improvement has coincided with Maguire’s better form. Fred drops in and Maguire goes wider doubling up with the fullback. Once McTominay comes in for Matic, watch the massive improvement.Reply

Certainly Lindelof is miles behind Bailly if we compare the Chelsea game with today. The question is can Bailly stay fit? Weird first half with Matic playing poorly. I was thinking I could do what he did for a tenth of the price but a similar speed - and I'm 63. Surely his playing time will be reduced when McT returns to full fitness. I hope someone gives Daniel James an almighty kick up the arse, too, for the dense way he lost the ball on the edge of his own box, leading to a Watford chance and the corner from which they thought they had equalized.Reply

Bruno regrets, no tears to cry, don't want Pogba back, we'd only cry again. Just kidding. Pogba can return if he really wants but he'd best realize that the natural leader of our team is already making himself known in a determined, humble, and skillful way.Reply

Well, they're starting to recover, that's beyond doubt now. They're still not very good but they're no longer embarrassingthemselves.
I've been very down on them. Very down. I still doubt they're going to do much beyond win the odd cup and qualify for Europe before going out whenever they meet a team with real quality but they no longer embarrass themselves and credit to Solskjær for that. They're pretty much going to be the United of the 70s and 80s at 100times the price.
The Glazers will always hold them back and plunder the place though. It's why they're there.Reply

Drawing with (league leaders) Bruges only because of a rush of blood to Romero’s head. Otherwise we’d have won. And that was with a 2ndstring side.

I think part of the reason many people(including me) wanted someone else in is because of who is available; Pochetinio. That combined with serious under performance for roughly half the season means that its not hard to see why a change seemed necessary. That said if United make the CL then I reckon Solksjear should remainin place.

Still asking for his dismissal. Over 13 months later, no discernible plan and tactic. Every now and then the genuine talent of a few players papers the cracks. He is a nice lad but this job is way above his level of competence. Nothing I saw today changed that fact.Reply
