Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes celebrates scoring the opening goal. Photograph: Martin Rickett/PA After a dour start this became the Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes show. Each have the quality Manchester Unitedrequire if a
challenge for a Champions League berth is to be mounted, this win lifting them two places up to fifth in this quest. Both scored while showing their team-mates how to turn a contest United’s way. In the closing stages Mason Greenwood caught on, starting and finishing a move for an 11th of the 18-year-old’s breakthrough season, the final pass to him coming – inevitably –from Fernandes.
BRUNO FERNANDES VOWS TO GET UNITED INTO CHAMPIONS LEAGUERead more
Ole Gunnar Solskjær had changed two from last Monday’s win atChelsea
:
Victor Lindelöf replaced Eric Bailly and Greenwood came in for Brandon Williams, the manager deciding against handing Odion Ighalo a first United start against his former club. Nigel Pearson’s only adjustment from a draw at Brighton15
days ago was the manager’s preference for Craig Dawson instead ofAdrian Mariappa.
The contest nearly began badly for United when Nemanja Matic and Harry Maguire dithered allowing Troy Deeney a sight of David De Gea’s goal but he muffed the chance. At the other end Greenwood made a threatening run, scattering yellow shirts before him, and used the space to shoot but his effort was straight at Ben Foster. United can be flaky in defence because of the gap between the rearguard and midfield and, sensing this, Roberto Pereyra skated forward and found Gerard Deulofeu to the left, he passed to the unmarked Abdoulaye Doucouré and the home team were lucky he could notfinish.
Images
Profligacy was becoming a theme. The next to show a blunt edge was Aaron Wan-Bissaka. This time the chance came when Daniel James’s cross was parried to the right-back’s feet but he shot into the sidenetting.

United and Watford were staging a bits-and-pieces contest that lacked a touch of class where it mattered. Martial certainly possesses it but even he wildly ballooned a 25-yard effort. At least, though, the build-up impressed: a Maguire challenge taking the ball near his area, Fred then being fed and racing over halfway, before Martial became involved. At the 30-minute mark a collector’s item was offered up: a curving Doucouré attempt that would actually have registered if De Gea had not flung himself right to save. James and Fred then added to the number of spurned opportunities: both firing over the bar. Now, though, came a breakthrough via a slick James ball that slipped in Fernandes. The Portuguese swerved around Foster and when the keeper brought him down the referee, Martin Atkinson, awarded the penalty. Fernandes took this and did so with a swagger United have missed in recent years: an odd-looking hop straight up in the air sent Foster to his right before he slotted his first goal for United. As the break approached he could and should have had a second but spooned wideMartial’s pass.
The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email. Still that was Fernandes 13th straight penalty converted in top-flight football and set United up neatly for the second half. Yet when Luke Shaw conceded a corner disaster came close to striking when it was delivered from the right and Deeney bundled home. Yet as at Chelsea (twice) VAR saved United: Craig Dawson was adjudged – correctly – to have elbowed the ball on to the left post before his captain’sfinish.
If this caused inevitable glee from United fans, the emotion was nearly superseded by jubilation when James – in his finest display for a while – played Greenwood in. The teenager’s pivot-and-pass across Foster’s goal was inviting and Adam Masina was relieved toclear.
Witnessed next, though, was a Martial special. As at Chelsea and Bruges on Thursday when scoring the centre-forward had been quiet before waking to show his killer instinct. Fernandes was the craftsman, threading the ball through, and Martial the artist. When Foster blocked his initial shot the 23-year-old was in a cul-de-sac manned primarily by Étienne Capoue. Yet Martial performed a drag-back that left Watford player a spectator before, from under Foster’s nose, he chipped his third goal from three games in the last sevendays.
Powell/EPA
If he trusted his left foot he might have hit Fernandes’s free-kick seconds later for a third but he does not. Maguire, too, was gifted a golden chance – again from Fernandes – with a clear header but fluffed his big moment. This was only the third time United have claimed consecutive league wins this season, Greenwood’s emphatic strike, pin-balling off the frame, sending United and their fans home even more content.MATCH STATS

Good performance. Midfield is so much more dynamic without Pereira init.
Glad to see Greenwood on the scoresheet... What a strike. And if James is able to add finishing to his repitoire, he will be quite theplayer.
Positive to see how much better this performance was compared to our last outing against Watford. Only letdown was Ighalo's effort being deflected into the post. Damn I want that guy to succeed.Reply

I thought Shaw played really well today, dug us out a couple of times and has started to look far more confident going forward again. Bruno is top quality, a peach of a midfielder. I was thinking Greenwood was having a quiet game and then he dropped his shoulder and smashed in an absolute beauty, he’s some finisher. Tony on the scoresheet again, three in a row. Top four still well within reach, we look like we’re making progress, Spurs are on the slide, Sheffield Utd look like they’ll hang around, and Chelsea blow as hot and cold as us. It’s going to be close.Reply

Today's result shows what United can achieve when Lingard and Pereira are both dropped from the match-day squad. I agree with some comments already that while he's yet to master his tactical nous, Ole has at least been better than most managers post-Fergie era when it comes to signings. James, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka and now Bruno have all brought steady improvements to the squad. The next four league games will be pivotal though - Everton, City, Spurs and Sheffield United - pretty much make or break for CLaspirations.

I expect we'll see less about Solskjær being unsuitable now, he's ridden it out I hope. Just one useless manager in the league now as I'm sure Levy realises.Reply

Ole is putting a lot of egg on many many half witted pundits faces who continually write him off as a manager. Well done Ole. Well done his players. Watford have been on a roll and then hit a solid red united wall today and I am a liverpool fan.Reply

Man Utd have had 14 penalties this season. 14! Must be on for a record. They didn't even get that many when they were the best attacking team in the country!Reply

It's a compliment, really. Opposition teams have been forced through desperation to bring down our attacking players near the goal. It's logical that the more attacking you are, the more often you'll winpenalties.

I love Solskjær, I wanted him to come to Leeds, we would have worshipped him and played him every game. He'll get the plaudits on here and in the media for that victory, but I have to say, I disagree with Neville and others who keep slagging off united, on paper that is a very good team and they should be challenging. They're the highest paid players in the league.. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern wouldn't accept this mediocrity.Reply

Maguire may not have had many opportunities from set pieces to score before Bruno, but when he did he missed all of them. Yes, he has scored one now. But, that cross was a peach and should have tucked itaway.

United would probably have been safely inside the top four right now if they'd bought Fernandes before the season kicked off... he's made a massive difference to the midfield, a bit of creativity and vision with a range of passing that has been missing for a while now (Pogba aside, but that's for another thread). A midfield three of Bruno, McT and Fred is not too bad...Reply

Exactly. He was the difference today and I think he will be for many games. He understands his role in the team as opposed to Lingard andAndreas.

I would like to see VAR scrapped at the end of the season. The PL are hopefully thinking the same thing. The price we are paying for a very small number of refereeing blunders or missed penalties is a huge number of ridiculous offsides where being 'level' with the last man is no longer onside if your left boot tip or right armpit is nearer thegoal line.
Added to that is the misery of the VAR delay while some hidden official in front of a tv screen often over a hundred miles away spends 2 or 3 or even 4 minutes to try to work out where the arm stops and the shoulder begins. The duffer who ruled out the legitimate Bournemouth equaliser against Burnley yesterday needs a course in anatomy or maybe just needs to goto Specsavers.
While we do still have this giant spontaneity killer on the loose we have to let it be applied consistently, so irrespective of whether United have had three goals chalked off against them in a week, or whether De Bruyne is allowed to protect his pampered face with his hands while others are penalised for handball; managers and players and fans should shut the fuck up and stop whinging about VAR. This is after all what PL football club chairmen voted in last summer so perhaps they may just have learnt the lesson? United beat a Watford team who look good enough to go down if they don't start taking the chances they create. Arguably Norwich, Villa, West Ham and Bournemouth are worse, but the table doesn't lie on gameday 38.Reply

They won't get rid of it. And since all you're really doing a moaning about VAR in exactly the same way people used to moan about referees, you wouldn't feel any better if they did.Reply

The problem is the old line that Utd has referees in their pockets is dead. VAR is there for all to see. The people is see and hear moaning about VAR are where decisions have gone against their team and the sore losers. Decisions go against every one. It is how you receive and deal with it that counts in the end. The Lo Celso red is the only one I can think of where the decision was was blatantly wrong.Reply

TBF mate, as a Watford fan, that handball by Dawson was deliberate and obvious - defo the right call to disallow the Denney goal. Thought Waty played quite well, didn't take our chances early doorsand paid the price.

Adjust what? He had 20 yards to judge the trajectory of the ball and used his arm to not only direct but add impulse to the ball towards the goal. Stuck to his side is irrelevant.Reply
