Manchester United

stuttered

throughout this tepid affair yet still remain favourites to reach the last 16 at the expense of Club Brugge in next week’s return leg. Towards the end here snow fell, replacing the rain, on a night when each side was frozen in a deep below-par state. While Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side have the away goal, whether United possess the talent and skill to win this competition for a second time in four seasons is doubtful. “It was a difficult game against a well organised team in difficult conditions,” said the manager. “I don’t think it was one of the

best games.”

HAPPENED

Solskjær made six changes for this second of three games in seven days, with Anthony Martial leading a 3-4-2‑1, while Philippe Clement’s side had the former Liverpool No 1 Simon Mignolet behind a

5-3-2.

United’s win at Chelsea on Monday was the perfect way to commence the closing phase of the campaign following the winter break. The question, though, remained the same: might it finally initiate a formidable run of form that has been elusive since the beginning of Solskjær’s tenure. They started well, but that would prove a false augury in a half when United were largely dismal until the last 10

minutes.

From kick-off Nemanja Matic hit Diogo Dalot with a diagonal along the right and his flick was collected inside Brugge’s area by Martial. Moments later United had a scare, though. Brandon Williams missed a challenge, enabling Emmanuel Bonaventure to advance towards Sergio Romero in the United goal. When the ball found Hans Vanaken, Brugge’s captain seemed certain to score, but Matic intervened and the danger fizzled out. United threatened again via a sequence that began with Victor Lindelöf and Dalot exchanging passes inside their half and featured a contribution from Luke Shaw before Andreas Pereira’s shot was saved by Mignolet low to his left. Now, the Brugge goalkeeper was about to have a prime role in United conceding.

Matic overran the ball to give Brugge a goal-kick. Mignolet took this quickly, hitting a long delivery through the middle. This was collected by Bonaventure, who held off Williams and calmly lobbed the advancing Romero. United immediately claimed to the referee, Aleksei Kulbakov, that Mignolet had hit a moving ball but despite VAR being in use from this round on, the Belarusian was unmoved. Here was a test for United and one that might have become sterner if Mats Rits had not scuffed an attempt near Romero’s goal. United escaped but continued to be vulnerable whenever the home side attacked. Harry Maguire was caught out of position so Percy Tau dropped in behind and from the ensuing play Bonaventure broke the United ranks again. This time Romero saved his shot at a tight angle

from close in.

The home crowd was in raucous voice. When Shaw’s pass put Maguire under pressure close to his goal, the captain bought a foul by falling as Tau approached and the spectators were in uproar. FRASER FORSTER RESCUES CELTIC WITH PENALTY SAVE AGAINST COPENHAGEN

Solskjær may have looked at Bruno Fernandes on the bench and decided his midfield poise was required. United were poor, embodied by Maguire scooping a regulation pass straight out. Yet from this error United equalised. Maxim De Cuyper aimed his throw-in at Brandon Mechele near halfway but the centre-back dozed, Martial stole the ball, swooped towards Mignolet and finished for a fine solo strike to follow his

opener at Chelsea.

Solskjær said: “It is a good goal he wasn’t really in the game – he didn’t make enough runs in behind, it was a frustrating night for him. He’s got two in two and you’ve to be patient as a striker – when the chance comes.” Martial’s 14th of the season silenced the stadium aside from the travelling support and he came close to adding another. Once more his skill fashioned him space and he was unlucky to see a left-foot shot from a 20-yard angle rebound off Mignolet’s left post, the keeper’s fingertips saving his side. United started the second half brightly but as with the first faded. First, Juan Mata fed Dalot and his curving cross came close to creating a chance for Martial. Then Mata slipped in the Frenchman but when he should have shot he tried a return ball to the Spaniard and the move broke down. The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email. From here any quality seeped from the contest – each side proving bereft of a spark. On show was a hodgepodge of mistimed touches and

passes.

Solskjær put on Odion Ighalo, Fred and Fernandes for the last phase of the match and though no real upturn occurred in his brief cameo the last of these managed four shots – the most for United, which was indicative of how poor they were. “He made a difference in 10 minutes,” Solskjær said, after a night that will not be long remembered.

Having to play a tough away league game on Monday night and then play an away leg in Europe 3 days later is ludicrous, not just for United but for any PL team in Europe. Other leagues allow their clubs to rearrange league matches to allow them more time to prepare for European games, on the basis that more success reflects well on their

domestic game.

Decent result considering the team we put out. Bruno looks a different class- certainly a huge improvement on jlingz and pereira. Hopefully we put out a slightly stronger team in the home leg, as I still dont see us getting 4th without pogba / rashford (and yes i know 5th is CL but lets be honest, Citys ban wont last.) Europa remains our best opportunity to CL, we should go for it.

A poor report on a wet night in Brugges. Matic didn't overrun the ball; it was a Man Utd corner. Solskjaer fielded a rotation max team and against Belgium's top side, were nearly found out. Williams and others found themselves stretched, others, such as Lingard and Mata, faced their limitations. Martial is not someone who you can bank on for everything for all the game. He comes in and out, brilliant as he can be, but he needs support and rivalry…

Of course City’s ban won’t last. Oil State FC don’t need to worry about ‘rules’ or ‘regulations’. As long as oil is a valuable commodity and the tyrannical state of Abu Dhabi is doing well, city don’t need to worry about that kind of

thing.

Let’s just hope for City’s sake that viable renewable energy is years and years and years off and we can all happily destroy the planet for future generations while they accumulate league titles and the the odd CL title while they merrily boo the anthem of the competitions they compete in while they collect the petrodollars of their tyrant benefactors. Yay city. Yay Arabian tyranny.

I would have seen this as a positive result with Mourihno. Now? I am not too sure. Remember United play better vs the big boys. No one can accuse Brugge of that. They are certainly not PSG. They actually have a very good chance of knocking United out. All the best to them at OT. I am not yet that bored of United's misery.

Nope. Not any more.

Their chance was tonight. A second, and perhaps even third goal when after their first one, when we really wobbled would have put the cat

among the pigeons.

But this is as good as it gets for them. This Bruges team will lose the away game at Old Trafford by about 4-0 if we play our best team from the start, I reckon.

I wonder what will be said about Var what with their goal coming from a not given corner and a rolling ball from the subsequent restart -seems to always impact on matches. Cannot deserve they deserved one

for their play.

Think it was a fairly even game and the tie is still open for the return leg and Brige will feel like they can score against us so should be an entertaining affair.

Does that count as an assist by Maguire. Makes a dreadful pass. But that is surpassed by a dreadful throw in straight to Martial. Pure comedy. But an entertaining game for a neutral like me.

As it should have been a corner to United in the first place the assist should probably go to the referee.

Romero reminds us why he's not a top goalkeeper. Dreadful on the opening goal. There's no angle to narrow, there's defensive cover once the attacker tries to bring the ball under

control.

With a bouncing ball that sits up nicely, all you do by rushing out like that is to take away the inconvenience of having to get the ball under control and invite the player to knock it over your head. It doesn't even need to be particularly accurate in that position. And so

it happened.

Then for good measure, there's another cock up close to the line with a pass/clearance, just like he did recently. But there will be those happy with a couple of near post saves.

Well the fact that he is a back up doesn't really challenge my view that is is not a top keeper. You've seen all the back up keepers in the world have you? How did you manage that if they are just back ups? ;) Is he in demand like other back up keepers have been? Nope.

Saw this match since I needed to stay up for the arsenal game and maybe their fans might not agree with me but I felt united were absolutely atrocious. The passing was woeful(the pitch did not help). No off the ball movement. No game plan. Maguire got rolled over a couple of times easily by Dennis. J lingz continuing to be a passenger. Ole continuing to be clueless. I have seen managers with way lesser teams to be much

more organised.

Positives from the game? Not losing and coming with an away goal. Bruno looks to be a very good player technically. And well he's not been at his best for some time now, but my heart melts everytime I see Juan Mata play.

Well, that went better than I expected before the game but only because of bad Bruges finishing when they had us on the ropes at 1-0. The Belgians were close to 2-0 and 3-0 in one five-minute patch after their first goal, and that really would have been a second Bruges

Matins massacre.

But then the Belgian defence screwed up badly and Martial basically scored a goal from nothing at all. A real world class goal. Ole got lucky. We got lucky. But I really hope that from here on, we take the Europa League seriously and play our very best, fit and uninjured First XI. That means playing Fernandes from start, using Bailly and also McTominay, Rashford and Greenwood as soon as they are fit in these kinds of games (none of the three were fit and available for selection

today).

If I see Lingard and Pereira and Mata and Dalot starting a possible round of 16 tie against the likes of Inter or Roma, I'll climb up the

walls.

As soon as I saw that 6 changes had been made and with one up front I knew United would make it very difficult for themselves . Ole needs to get a run of games with good wins before he starts tinkering even though they have 7 games in 21 days . Only time it looked convincing was when Fernandes came on . Get 3 up and then make changes not before a ball’s been kicked .

Club Brugge are bloody great on PES 2019 online, get me something like 725 points for a win. Wearing green. They're just so reliable, work hard, play for eachother. Then can pull out a moment of skill. Love them. Plus i think opponents see me as such a weak team and think it'll be easy, then I can pretend that's true to increase my levels of satisfaction if i out play them and win. Talking about pro evo online is a bit like talking about the last dream you had isn't it?

A brilliant result against truly world class opposition. Man Utd went toe to toe with the best team in all of Belgium and got an excellent draw. If you draw a triangle between the center of Paris, Brussels and Dover, Solksjaers United are undefeated in that whole region, and there are probably few managers who can say that.

A lot of people moaning about the line up as if United don’t have 3

games in a week.

Not a bad result but feel United should have nicked it at the end. Bruno Fernandes made a huge difference when he came on. He looks a

player.

3 games in a week after a fortnight off - however will they cope?

They'd be able to cope easily if they were the last three games of the season... but there are a lot more to come after these. With this limited squad, this was an obvious time to give some donkeys a run and save our classier players for the tougher tests.

United missed a trick in not letting De Gea go last season - now he's lost his mojo, Romero and Henderson are capable replacements, and that 350k a week is desperately needed elsewhere

He comes in and out, brilliant as he can be, but he needs support and rivalry. Fernandes' introduction, a token showing for the last ten minutes, nevertheless ignited the game and demonstrated the potential of this talented, positive footballer. Man U desperately need McTominay and Greenwood back in action; they need to stop missing Rashford, and get on with it. Without Pogba and his gold Rolls Royce. It's a duct taped team with an inexperienced manager, hoping against hope for top four and a big, careful spend in

the summer.

Jamie has decided he doesn’t like OGS and reports as negatively as he can. Everyone knew from the start of the season that Utd might not be up to much given the cards Ole has been dealt from the start of the season. They scraped a draw but it wasn’t Utd’s strongest side and caution due to a depleted squad due to injury. Credit where you get it. A more attacking line up at OT should make Utd a different proposition but the midfield needs a lift. McTominay’s return can’t come soon enough frankly. Regrettably Pereira, Matic and Lingard offer little at any time. Surely the youngsters offer more endeavour and effort than them. They may offer some experience but it counts for little if confidence is shot, legs are gone or they are just plain incompetent.

> Matic didn't overrun the ball; it was a Man Utd corner. Imagine if that happened to Klopp, who was moaning about a throw given to the wrong side yesterday, three phases of play before they conceded

a goal.

What cards has he been dealt? He let Lukaku go after mismanaging him last season. He only brought in three players, only one of whom (AWB) has actually been any good. James hasn't done anything for half a season now and Maguire keeps getting away with it in the media because he's English, despite being partially or completely at fault for nearly half the goals we've conceded.

The PL is probably relishing the freedom of telling United what to do rather than than the opposite during the Fergie years..

Given that Premier League clubs currently hold all the major European trophies, with all four finalists being English, it doesn't seem like much advantage is gained by doing this...

There haven't been many occasions over the last 20 years that half of Man Utd's starting eleven wouldn't get in Norwich's first eleven. They are playing dire football as well, and based on what I saw, Brugge deserved to scrape it. Man Utd have actually been very lucky in a lot of the games where they have actually come away with something. In an Alan Partridge moment, the owners should be speaking into a dictaphone, 'sack Ole, sack Ole, for being unimaginative'.

True, Jim. Neither did two games v Norwich this season. Nothing against them of course but the observation is nonsense. The last Norwich players good enough for United were Phelan and Bruce.

This game highlighted our thin squad. A decent result in the end. I'd like to think we will beat them at our gaff.
