1:07 'Their maturity was remarkable': Critchley hails youngest-ever Liverpool team – video As the youngest team in Liverpool’s history celebrated reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup it was not hard to imagine Jürgen Klopp, laptop and beer at the ready, affording himself a wry smile on holiday. His gamble, his disrespect, his principled stand against football congestion, call it what you will, had paid off. Liverpool’s youth made their own point – they were far too accomplished for Shrewsburyand worth
considering at Chelsea next time out. Another Anfield victory ended with Liverpool’s manager punching the air in front of the Kop but, with Klopp absent, it was Neil Critchley who revelled in the moment and a performance that obeyed his pre-match instructions. “The boss was in touch this afternoon with some words of advice and encouragement,” revealed Critchley. “Play the Liverpool way, go for it. That is what the first team do. This is how we play, this is what we stand for and you had better be ready for it. We had a message from the staff afterwards that he is absolutely delighted with the performance and buzzing.” NEWCASTLE’S ALLAN SAINT-MAXIMIN SINKS OXFORD WITH STUNNING LATEWINNER

Progress was secured courtesy of a calamitous own goal by the Shrewsbury defender Ro-Shaun Williams and abetted by VAR’s decision to disallow Shaun Whalley’s header for the visitors, but there was no disputing the merit of Liverpool’s win. The average age of Liverpool’s starting line-up was 19 years and 102 days. It featured four debutants in Adam Lewis, Liam Millar, Jake Cain and Leighton Clarkson. They were forced to wait 15 minutes before playing in front of a capacity Anfield crowd for the first time with kick off delayed by a crash on the M62 that impacted on match traffic. They handled the step-up effortlessly while Shrewsbury floundered badly. Sam Ricketts’ sLeague One side did not produce a shot on target as they failed to rediscover the energy and belief that brought them back from two goals down in the first encounter. “I feel for the players,” the Shrewsbury manager said. “They worked so hard to get here but our 39th game of the season caught up with us. We couldn’t get near them or impose ourselves on them. Maybe we should have a winter break.”,
were prominent as the home side dictated proceedings. Their superior technique and natural confidence was obvious although opportunities to make it count were limited in the first half. Jones drilled a free-kick straight at the goalkeeper Max O’Leary. Williams went close with a low drive that sailed wide of the far post and he saw another effort blocked by Scott Golbourne. Liverpool were composed, sharp and feeding off the support of the crowd. Shrewsbury were remarkably flat by comparison. Even taking their struggles in League One into account, the visitors were underwhelming. They may have been unable to rise to the occasion due to Liverpool’s dominance of the ball but the Shrews failed to make their physical advantage count and rarely threatened CaoimhinKelleher’s goal.
Williams had the majority of Liverpool’s chances despite operating on the right of defence. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s spirit of adventure has evidently rubbed off. The Wales Under-19 player swept a half volley over before being denied by O’Leary’s instinctive save with his feet following an incisive pass from Elliott. Ricketts introduced Daniel Udoh for the injured Callum Lang and the substitute made an immediate impact, spinning away from Williams and crossing for David Edwards to force a fine close range save from Kelleher. The rebound looped up for Whalley to convert but then came the dreaded wait for VAR. It found Udoh had been offside in the build-up and the celebrations switched from the Shrewsbury end to the rest of Anfield as the goal was disallowed. Edwards urged his teammates to keep their heads amid the deflation. Unfortunately for Shrewsbury and their hopes of a lucrative trip to Stamford Bridge, Williams used his with dire consequences. There were 15 minutes remaining when O’Leary threw the ball towards the substitute Jason Cummings, Shrewsbury’s two-goal hero last time out, but Liverpool’s Williams intercepted easily. He returned the ball deep into the Shrewsbury area where the central defender, unaware that his goalkeeper was coming to collect, headed over O’Leary and into his own net. The kids were through, deservedly so.MATCH STATS

With reduced prices, it was £15 for adults, fiver for OAPs and a quid to get in for kids. Could have got the whole squad in for 20 notes and bought them all a Mr Freeze each.Jump to comment

Credit to the young players tonight for their spirit, determination and courage. Vindication for Klopp given the hand he was played by the FA in organising a mid winter break just after the fourth round of the FA Cup. Well done to Neil Critchley also for his preparation for thegame tonight.

I'm not going to patronise Shrewsbury, that could have been a much bigger margin of victory. As far as Liverpool are concerned. Well done lads. You've done yourselves proud there. Now GET TO BED!Reply

What is? Have to say it’s pleasing to see var in action this time. We’d have had a penalty at Shrewsbury first half and they wouldn’t have had a penalty in the second half if technology was at the leagueone ground.

For the 5th Round of the FA Cup away at Chelsea, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has booked himself into the Wallasey Travelodge and rented several VHS tapes for the evening. He has ordered all the ball-boys from the local area to form a team for this fixture and has called a favour from his one time buddy Les Dennis to manage the game. “It is great to be back in the spotlight”, said a beleaguered, tired looking Dennis “and our survey says… I think we can dothem!”

Maybe..just maybe Neil Critchley is a genius . Perhaps Klopp could let him manage the remaining PL games after we have won the title in March.

Watched the game on a dodgy Polish stream with no sound as they didn’t show any of the cup replays where I live. Not that it mattered as I still haven’t figured out exactly what meczopóźniony means.
Statman Gaz had nothing to get all worked up about because the Liverpool Under 20s, the youngest Liverpool team ever, or whatever they were, fully deserved their win. For once the stats tell the full story. They played some great passing football and approach play and stood up to the physicality of the Shrewsbury players pretty well, even if they were a tad lightweight in the box. Couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for Shrewsbury actually, even if they reminded me of an early-90s Wimbledon team with the strips and the tackling. An OG is a gutting way to go out. Anyway I’m sure the travelling fans had a cracking night out and twas a fair result in theend.

Under 23s or underwhelming? Shows that the senior team is all about buying success and nothing to do with academy players. Totally undeserved win but nice help from the ref for Liverpool as usual. Pity for Shrewsbury. Let’s see if Klopp disrespects the FA Cup again in the see u next Tuesday eliminator against Chelsea in round 5.Reply

Credit to the young players tonight for their spirit, determination and courage. Vindication for Klopp given the hand he was played by the FA in organising a mid winter break just after the fourth round of the FA Cup. Well done to Neil Critchley also for his preparation for thegame tonight.

The young kids did well, but I don't think the result turns this intoa credit for Klopp.
The disrespect to the competition (not even sending the 1st team manager) and the opposition (heavy discounts and no TV reducing theirtake home) remains.
The real credit to Klopp would have been putting a team out to win it first time out knowing that that the precious winter break was roundthe corner.

I feel terrible for Ro-Shaun Williams... but I'll take the 'W.' After all of he criticism directed at Klopp and Liverpool, all of the 'disrespect' talk coming from the Shrewsbury Supporters Group, all of the ingratitude at the club reducing prices, thereby making it easier for Shrews fans to attend... they still could not get the better of a group of youth team players. I don't mean to bash the Shrewsbury players, they gave it their best and came up just short, but maybe next time Shrewsbury fans wouldn't be so quick to look past a golden opportunity handed to thier club.Reply

It was "denying" Shrewsbury much-needed revenue, despite the fact it lead to a sell out crowd. The FA cost them much more by refusing to broadcast the game.Reply

The Kids Are United they shall never be divided (until they are sold on or promoted to the senior side) The FA wanted the magic of the cup and they got it but refused to officially show it - thankfully someone was happy to leave a feed to escape into the wild. A boisterous performance by what was the youngest ever side to play a senior match for Liverpool, they ran the passing game, Shrewsbury happy to leave a foot in and a foot on players who could and did run rings around them at times. The finishing was wayward, Liam Millar was the only proper forward and he made little impression in that regard but Neco Williams and Curtis Jones conspired to miss or misscue about half a dozen pretty good opportunites. As for that late counter attack least said soonest mended and it didn't matter thankfully. Chelsea up next, will Klopp change the approach? Hope not! Anyone feeling sorry for the Shrews should save their tears, this should have been their big chance. They blew it - that the only goal was by one of their (ex Man Utd) defenders is just one of thosethings.

After all the disrespect that has been spewed recently, hopefully some people will be eating humble pie and giving the Liverpool players and coaches the respect they have shown they deserve. Long live the magic of the cup, and shame on you all that were disrespecting it by having a go at Klopp, his coaches, and hisplayers.

Hardly a dodgy disallowed goal. It was comfortably offside - the only surprise was it took VAR so long to give it. https://twitter.com/DaleJohnsonESPN/status/1224819743250624515Reply
