JASON BLUM ON ‘THE INVISIBLE MAN’S’ #METOO MESSAGE AND ELISABETH MOSS’ SCIENTOLOGY TIES

When Leigh Whannell explained his idea for _The Invisible Man_ to Jason Blum, the horror maestro was rapt. Whannell’s version of the story is basically unrecognizable from the H.G. Wells novel that inspired it—and the 1933 adaptation that precedes it. In this version, Elisabeth Moss plays a domestic violence survivor named Cecilia who flees her wealthy husband, Adrian—who also happens to be a lead optics researcher. It’s a timely interpretation, to say the least; the #MeToo movement has inspired plenty of discussions about how often women’s accounts of assault and abuse are not believed. What better metaphor than a stalker no one can see? “It was the fact that we were going to make an _Invisible Man_ where the star of the movie was not the invisible man,” Blum recently told The Daily Beast. “And that the invisible man was the bad guy… I guess the idea of a woman being gaslit by a guy who could be invisible is a movie that I’d want to see.”

An invisible villain is only as good as the performer he’s haunting, and it’s hard to think of a better candidate than Moss to tackle this role. She has, after all, spent years depicting a similarly topical struggle on _The Handmaid’s Tale_

.

In _The Invisible Man_, as in _Handmaid’s_, Moss brings intensity to every frame. As silly as the idea of an abuser building his very own invisibility suit sounds—and plenty of characters point out to Cecilia that it sounds pretty laughable—Moss lends her character’s insistent, desperate terror credibility. Blum knew from the beginning what Moss could do in this role; he’d already worked with her in Jordan Peele’s_ Us_

,

and had seen on _Handmaid’s _what she can do with this kind of

material.

“She’s both exceptional and everyday,” Blum said of Moss. The producer added that there are movie stars whose actual acting range can vary—and then there are character actors who struggle to carry films. “And I think what’s unique about Elisabeth is that she has

both.”

The film’s topicality, Blum said, does help drive the story and ground it in an instantly recognizable context—but “what really drew it to me was that it was an, I think, super fun, compelling story. Not that, _Oh this fits with the headlines of the time, so we’re gonna do that movie_.” When asked what he wanted viewers to take away from_ The Invisible Man_, he added, “What I want people to take away from the movie is that it’s a fun, great ride.” Blum drew criticism after he said in a 2018 interview that Blumhouse hadn’t worked with any female directors in its more than decade-long history because there simply weren’t that many to work with. At the time, Blum said he misspoke. When asked if making this film without a woman directing or writing had ever been a concern, Blum said pointed out that Blumhouse’s _Black Christmas_,_ Run Sweetheart Run_, and upcoming _The Craft_ remake all come from female directors—and as for this film, “I think it’s very limiting to suggest that women can only direct movies about women and men can only direct stuff about men.” (It’s also worth noting that men experience intimate partner violence as

well.)

,

it can be hard to watch this film, with its themes of overcoming abuse, and not sense a twinge of hypocrisy. She is, after all, a member of the Church of Scientology—an organization that has faced more than its fair share of abuse claims. Blum said he did not know about Moss’s affiliation with the church until after she had already been cast—“and had I known she was a Scientologist, it would have made no difference.”

“I shudder at the notion of that,” he said. “Everyone’s entitled to their own belief... and that doesn’t affect their

talent.”

Ultimately, something about _The Invisible Man_ never quite snaps into place. Although the dread is there from those very first shots of Adrian’s house—built right on the ocean with glass walls to overlook violent, pounding waves—_The Invisible Man_ struggles to find the right horror language to drive its point home as the violence crescendos. Its villain never manages to be nearly as scary as what he represents. And the ending, an unearned and jarring emotional pivot, feels like a miscalculation that undoes any argument for the film’s metaphorical value. Still, given that _The Invisible Man_ was initially slated as part of Universal’s cursed Dark Universe—starring Johnny Depp—we could probably have done worse.

The debate in South Carolina was heavy on the shouting matches, flat jokes, and opponent shivving, but light on winning.

It was late into Tuesday night’s debate when former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg challenged Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) about his praise for the domestic gains made by the Castro regime in Cuba. Sanders shot back to defend himself and his policy

agenda.

And then, they just started yelling. For the next half minute, the two screamed at each other, Sanders pointing his finger aimlessly over the dais, the candidates made annoyed hand gestures as a voice of a moderator, desperate to gain control of the fracas, called out from off-camera: “One at a

time!”

Such was the evening in Charleston, the last of these gatherings before voters head to the polls in the Palmetto State this Saturday and, more importantly for candidates not named “Joe Biden,” the last before Super Tuesday as well. If you wanted a debate to help you make up your mind, you came away disappointed. Instead, what you got was shouting and sighs, canned lines and badly landed jokes, curt ways for the candidates showing they had more to say, not-so-subtle pleas for campaign donations, and virtually everyone begging for more time. Which in many ways is true. They need more time. Most of them need more money. And it is precisely those needs that led to a debate defined by political desperation. Sanders, hot off a massive win in the Nevada caucuses and a closer victory in the New Hampshire primary, received his first proper frontrunner treatment as his rivals scrambled for a place in the more

moderate lane.

“I’m hearing my name mentioned a little bit tonight,” he said after facing a barrage of early attacks. “I wonder why?” But the desperation prompted some new and unlikely sparring matches not remotely directed in the frontrunner’s direction. Former Vice President Joe Biden and businessman Tom Steyer fought over the latter’s investment in a private prison company; Biden and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) sparred over which had done more to prevent domestic abusers from purchasing guns; Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)

went for the K.O.

with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, blasting him with allegations that he once demanded that an employee abort her unborn child and criticizing him for funding “right-wing” lawmakers in

past cycles.

“I don’t care how much money Mayor Bloomberg has,” Warren said. “The core of the Democratic Party will never trust him. He has not earned their trust. I will. And the fact that he cannot earn the trust of the core of the Democratic Party means he is the riskiest candidate standing on this stage.”

“I am not looking forward to a scenario where it comes down to Donald Trump with his nostalgia for the social order of the 1950s and Bernie Sanders with a nostalgia for the revolutionary politics of the 1960s,” Buttigieg said. “Several candidates complained openly about being cut off by the hosts. Others wondered aloud why they weren’t getting a chance to respond to attacks. Commercial breaks came at weird, inopportune moments and conversations seemed disjointed.” Tuesday was likely the last chance for some of the contenders lagging behind in the race to make their last-ditch appeals that have either failed to give them momentum or been able to sustain their limited

past success.

“Bernie in fact hasn’t passed much of anything,” Biden said as he tried to chip away at Sanders’ growing momentum. And less than a half hour in, the billionaire Steyer was already bemoaning the conversation on stage and the risk it posed for

Democrats.

“We are looking at a party that has decided that we’re either going to support someone who’s a democratic socialist or somebody who has a long history of being a Republican,” Steyer said. The arguing on stage also cut into some of the candidates’ patience. “If we spend the next four months tearing our party apart, we’re going to watch Donald Trump spend the next four years tearing our country apart,” said Klobuchar. As the evening progressed, it became clearer that the candidates themselves were growing frustrated with the proceedings. Several complained openly about being cut off by the hosts. Others wondered aloud why they weren’t getting a chance to respond to attacks. Commercial breaks came at weird, inopportune moments and conversations seemed disjointed as the moderates from CBS veered chaotically from

topic to topic.

For some of the seven on stage, the reality likely set in that this could be their last night in a 2020 debate—or their best chance at remaining relevant. That much was clear from the debate’s outset, when Biden made the stakes of this Saturday’s primary in the Palmetto State crystal clear, answering a question about his slipping poll numbers in South Carolina with an adamant pledge to win the state—a pledge that, should his numbers continue to drift downward, risks being played on loop. “I intend to win South Carolina and I will win the African-American vote here in South Carolina,” Biden said. But by the evening’s end, everyone just seemed a bit exhausted with how disorganized the whole thing was. And even a desperate Biden was left wondering why he was obeying the rules of a debate that had gone so far off the rails. “Why am I stopping?” he asked at one point, when he respected the moderator’s wishes that he would. “No one else stops.”
