KAI SCHWOERER/GETTY IMAGES KL Rahul's 56 off 27 helped India make a strong start to their chase. India have made a winning start to their Twenty20 international series against the Black Caps, pulling off an emphatic chase at Eden Park onFriday night.
Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor produced the most explosive half centuries of their Twenty20 international careers to lift the Black Caps to 203-5 from their 20 overs. But India chased it down in relative comfort, getting home with an over to spare and six wickets in hand. ANDREW CORNAGA/PHOTOSPORT Black Caps batsman Ross Taylor hits out on his way to making 54 off 27balls.
The two teams will return to the Auckland venue for the second contest in the five-match series on Sunday, with the hosts needing to bounceback.

Andrew Voerman • Sports reporter andrew.voerman@stuff.co.nz The Kiwi innings had the rhythm of a three-act play – first Colin Munro went off, supporter by his opening partner Martin Guptill; then it was Williamson, then finally it was Taylor. Munro took a liking to Shardul Thakur, hitting a four and six as he scored 11 off four balls in the second over, then a pair of fours and another six as he added 18 off six in the fourth. Guptill unleashed the shot of the innings to finish the power play, lofting Mohammed Shami down the ground for six to leave the Black Caps sitting pretty at 68-0. KAI SCHWOERER/GETTY IMAGES Black Caps captain Kane Williamson scored the fastest of his 10 Twenty20 international fifties. India struck in the eighth over with Shivam Dube removing Guptill for 30 off 19, caught at deep square leg by Rohit Sharma – who had to juggle the ball to avoid conceding six instead. Munro brought up his fifty soon after, cutting Yuzvendra Chahal for four, but the legspinner combined with Thakur for a bit of revenge in the next over, taking the catch that sent the opener on his way for 59off 42.
Williamson had already sprung into life by then, first hitting Dube for six over extra cover, then sending Thakur to the leg side boundary twice, and he ended up playing one of his best T20 innings, making it to 51 off 26 before skying a ball from Chahal. KAI SCHWOERER/GETTY IMAGES Black Caps opener Colin Munro celebrates his fifty against India. Colin de Grandhomme had come and gone for a duck, but Ross Taylor was there to lift the Black Caps over 200, first attacking Ravi Jadeja in the 15th over, then Shami in the 16th, where he and Williamson added22.
Taylor brought up his fifty in the final over – his first since March 2014 – and finished unbeaten on 54 off 27 with the Black Caps 203-5. His strike rate of 200 was easily the best of his five half centuries, as was Williamson's 196 of his 10. Mitchell Santner was given the ball for the second over when they took to the field, and it looked like a costly move for four balls, as KL Rahul drove him for four and Rohit Sharma took him down the ground forsix.
But with his fifth he got Sharma to top edge one and Taylor took the catch – sending the danger man on his way for 7 off 6. Kohli joined Rahul and the pair put the hammer down – the opener flicking Southee square for a memorable six – and they raced out to 65-1 at the end of the power play. The Black Caps were unable to slow India down, with Ish Sodhi going for 12 and Santner going for 14 as they raced out to 91-1 after eight. KAI SCHWOERER/GETTY IMAGES Hamish Bennett made his Twenty20 international debut for the BlackCaps against India.
Blair Tickner lured Kohli into a false stroke to start the ninth over, but as the ball rose high in the air in front of Sodhi at third man, he saw Tim Seifert coming and hesitated, then failed to take thecatch.
Rahul brought up his fifty the same over with a six, but Sodhi made amends for his earlier miss the following over, tempting him to offer Tim Southee a catch at long off, and he was on his way for 56 off 27, with India 115-2 at the halfway stage. Kohli finally fell seven balls later, caught brilliantly by a diving Martin Guptill in the deep on the leg side for 45 off 32 balls, and suddenly India had to start again. Sodhi struck again to remove Dube for 13 off nine, caught by Southee at long on, and with six overs remaining, India needed 60, so the asking rate was back where it started. Shreyas Iyer saw India home, finishing not out on 58 off 29 and hitting the winning six off Southee in the penultimate over. BLACK CAPS 203-5 (Colin Munro 59 off 42, Ross Taylor 54no off 27, Kane Williamson 51 off 26) LOST TO INDIA 204-4 (KL Rahul 56 off 27, Virat Kohli 45 off 32, Shreyas Iyer 58no off 29; Ish Sodhi 2-36) BYSIX WICKETS.

I see NZ bowled 10 wides and a no ball. That's nearly two extra overs for the Indians to chase down NZ's score, and they won with one over to spare. Bit more discipline needed in the next four games. While it was good to see Munro score some runs, you have to wonder how well one of the six or seven openers who were in better form than him in the domestic competition would have gone if given a chance.* Like

no problem with sodis bowling, if you look at where he was trying to bowl ,that is getting the batter to hit in a particular area, what i do have a problem with is kanes reluctance to change something quicker thats not working,(oh did i just criticise capt cricket?) and the media drooling over him* Like

Great Guptill took agreat catch but he is there to open and needs bigger score's. BC's need to be blooding in a replacement for a smooth transition as he won't be around much longer sporadic form and age. The AB's are continually so strong as they are always blooding new player's and on a regular basis this is what successful team's need todo.

I see a lot of comments that BCs had inexperienced bowlers. blah blah. Takur is a replacement for bhuvi. India is not playing their main players (dhawan, pandya, bhuvi). they are bringing in new players to stabilize the team for wc. so that is not the reason. BCs were simply outclassed by India last night. everyone wrote off India when they lost against Aussie in the 1st odi. then everyone know what happened next. BCs you can do better. good luck to both teams* Like

very proud of our BC'S sure they lost but a run out was on twice but for a rush of blood by the fielder and it could have changed the course if the match. great to see Ish getting respected by the opposition and taking wickets. But sorry Santner needs to go back to domestic cricket. Surely Neesham is our No 1 all rounder why isn't he playing. Great to see Guppy and Munro bringing their domestic form on and hopefully Kane and Ross settled any criticism that they cant bat fast.* Like

My favourite moments from the game were Taylor's blitz, Kane's uncharacteristically aggressive batting, Bumrah's brilliant 18th over, Rahul's sensational flicked six, Rahul's swatted six back over Santner's head, Guptill's breathtaking diving catch to dismiss Kolhi, Iyer's beautiful, yet calm, hitting to finish the game.* Like

One bolter I still think would be great at the World Cup with his accurate short ball on longer boundaries in Aus, and his knuckle ball etc is Neil Wagner. I also think that Bennett looked pretty good for his first game, and if De Grandhomme isn’t bowling then Mitchell or Neesham can have his spot. Ferguson to return also will make a bigdifference.

Oh to be a sports journalist in NZ, all you have to do follow the fashion trend on what you are reporting at the time (in this case how bad the Black Caps are), write articles to act as clickbait, and generally redefine the term hack. I for one enjoyed the game, over 400 runs scored so very entertaining, playing a nation that is fanatical about cricket and has a vast pool of players to choose from.* Like

Sodhi was our best bowler last night in case you missed it... while it would also be pretty hard to drop the 3rd ranked T20 bowler in the world... although Santner likely should be dropped for Sunday's game at the same ground. Sodhi and Ajaz Patel in the same team would beinteresting.

"It was like facing the Ilford seconds at one end and the Ilford seconds at the other end"would have been Graham Gooch's summation. But our batting was good, and it was fabulous to watch Guptill, Munro, Williamson & Taylor. We just have to get some of our injured stars back-is Neesham amongst them?* Like

The black caps need a positive captain in my opinion. Kane is a great player but his demeanor compared to Kohlis just showed he is very much down and out at the moment. Freshen it up give Taylor the reins for a few months until Kane gets to a positive place. It looked like a lack of leadership and enjoyment from my point ofview anyway

Very good points, and I agree with them all. My only issue with this ground is that it's basically a repurposed rugby stadium with literal "corners" on the boundary. This is not only aesthetically jarring, but actually does impact the on-field action in a pretty significant way as well. A traditional cricket stadium is always oval-shaped.* Like

My point is merely that as NZ's largest centre, Auckland deserves a better cricket ground. Is there a more oddly shaped, smaller ground on the internationalcircuit?
Wasn't an anti-Auckland statement. Just that folks in the City of Sails might appreciate something where mishits aren't worth six. Especially for longer format games. Glad you're happy with it.* Like

NZC is about to hit the doldrums big time. Domestic cricket is at an all time low and with all due repeat when you can give a 32 year old Journeyman a debut and he is the most economical on show then you’ve got problems. The batting was ok - maybe 20 short - but the bowling fielding was well below par. Santner Southee and Sodhi need to go!* Like

Using your analysis Shami won’t get another game for India. Sodhi’s fielding lets him down, but thought he was NZs best bowler last night, he is certainly their best wicket taking option.* Like

The batting was poor in Australia, last night it was the bowling and fielding. Two of the wickets we got were horrible balls that the Indians made mistakes on. What this summer has proved is that against world class opposition we have very little depth and the second tier of bowlers simply aren't up to standard.* Like

KW disappointing again as captain. Uses only 5 bowlers when they're going for 9-11 an over and you still have DG, Munro & himself who can bowl. Even if it's only for an over or two, there's three overs that he possibly could've taken off Bennet, Santner & Southee. KW, the idea is to win these games using whatever resources you have available... surely you don't use these games to trial players, as Santner & Southee wouldn't make the cut !!* Like

Why on earth Kane decided to let Santner bowl all of his 4 overs when he was getting hammered is beyond me, India's bowlers succeeded when bowling slower balls and i feel CDG would have been very handy but Kane decided not to bowl him, very odd but Kane always seems to persist with bowlers who get hammered and lets them keep gettinghammered.

Sodhi was our best bowler of the match and only conceded 3 boundaries? I admit Sodhis dropped catch cost us a lot but Southees brain fart deciding to throw the ball at the stumps on the run out attempt when he had all the time in the world to pass the ball to the bowler for an easy run out cost us big time.* Like

That’s a bit harsh. Certainly they have work ons though. I’d love to see Southee go spend several months reconditioning, kind of like when bond joined the police force. He needs to find his full pace where he used to be mid 130s and touch 140s at his quickest. He was world class when bond was coaching him and needs to get his mojo back. Santner is a good short form bowler who needs more bowling after a long break. Sohdi needs a lot of regular fielding practice.* Like

Once again four things fall into the diabolical category. Bowling, fielding, captaincy and coaching. The two most experienced bowlers in Santner and Southee going for almost 100 and the rest of them very average. Sack both of Southee and Santner. Fielding is appalling - poor catching and no urgency and school boy/club cricket run out failures. Captaincy poor - odd bowling changes, average field placements and no ability to react to the game. Coaching - well we simply have a head coach and his underlings who seem to have no clue what they are doing. All in alll a recipe for further failure.* Like

I think they were nice to Kiwis simply because Kiwis are nice toeveryone as well.
The Black Caps are hardly "useless" as you put it. They did, after all, manage to beat a very strong Indian side in the semifinals of the World Cup, remember? Having said that, this current Indian side does seem like a better one than the one that played that semifinals. Players like Shreyas Iyer, and M. Panday add considerable heft to India's middle order. Saini, who didn't play this game, is, likewise, a genuinely good paceoption for India.
I expect the Black Caps to fight back strongly on Sunday.* Like

I've just got one word to describe India's performance tonight:Jetlag.
That's right, India arrived on these shores on Wednesday, shortly after pummeling a full strength Australian unit back home. They arrived into a timezone that's a good seven-and-a-half hours ahead of their native timezone (Shreyas Iyer, after the game, admitted to having had to take sleeping pills to help adjust). Then, a little over a day later, they step out on to the park having lost three of their first-choice players to injury (Darwan, Kumar, Pandya), and, just like that, chase down a 200-plus score with an over to spare? Scary stuff indeed. This Indian outfit looks to be the real deal. The Black Caps are probably going to have to play out of their skins to win this series from here, and it only looks like it's going to get harder as the opposition gets better acclimatised to the conditionshere.

India’s bowling and fielding was worse than NZ. Difference was India’s batting. As a neutral it was beautiful to watch how they bat with proper effortless cricketing shots. Shreyas Iyer made batting look very easy - amazing to watch. He did have the advantage of facing Southee in what turned out to be thefinal over, though.
I thought Sodhi bowled the best he has for at least a year last night - good control, only two balls dragged down in his four overs. Bennett will be better now his first game is out of the way, and Tickner's competitive attitude is good to see. I felt Seifert's keeping was very ordinary - NZ will be lucky to get anyone stumped in this series.* Like

Hardly humbled - they lost the game, but they also put in some good individual batting scores. They could have just as easily won it in the last 3 overs. What I was disappointed with was some of the fielding - whats going on with that? We used to be the best fielding side in the world in all forms of the game. I'm going to put it down to an inexperienced side and missing bowlers.* Like

The Black Caps are always competitive, why would anyone feel humbled? But talking of team compositions, even the Indians are trying out new players, taking advantage of a few injuries. It's paid off so far...against the Safs first, then Bangladesh, then the Windies, followed by the Lankans, and finally the Aussies, but all this was at home, What makes today's win special is that it came overseas, within two days of landing at the airport.* Like

After the heat of Aussie and the heat from Aussie cricket their confidence looks down. 200 is a pretty good batting effort and it gave them a chance but their batsmen are really intimidating with some very small boundaries at Eden Park. NZ had two new boys bowling but that's 10 runs an over for both bowling units so its hard for all bowlers.* Like

Fielding has been a huge problem for some time, ever since we stopped having a specialist fielding coach. Particularly hitting stumps with runout attempts but also catching. Several dropped catches in Aus. A few against eng. missed run outs etc. And more of the same in this game. Cost us the World Cup final too as we needed to be spot on there and the catch that went for 6 and the overthrows cost us. We need to get back to having someone who is fully accountable for the standardof our fielding.

How can the Blackcaps be so poor? They are playing at home after almost a three week break and still lost, look at India they play almost twice the number of international matches as compared to New Zealand they came here only three days ago after finishing a series against Australia and yet they chased 200 without breaking a sweat, really disappointing to see as a kiwi fan* Like

because their bowlers and batters are better; just look at the averages. our bowlers were very poor but really no surprises there. tickner will always go for a few and Santner was worse than poor. our bowlers dont seem to be thinkers, like slow ball first up when wicket not holding up and should know batsman likely to target ball 1.* Like

Nz's batting was pretty good but the bowling was seriously woeful, yes they are missing several frontline bowlers but this is not an excuse someone else has to step up, if they keep bowling like this even a score of 250 will be not sufficient* Like

Actually, Sodhi bowled his full quota and picked up two wickets while going at around 9 runs-per-over in a game where the asking rate was 10runs-per-over.
The real bowling culprits were Southee, Santner, and TICKNER. I'm not a huge Sodhi fan either, but until a better option arrives, he's one of the best available spin options for the Black Caps.* Like

You answered your own question, they play twice the matches we do. We have shorter series and longer spells between series, during which it’s harder to develop form and then stay in form. And then their talent pool comes from 1.4 billion versus our 5 million. We punch way above our weight in cricket, just enjoy the contests and odd purplepatch.

India's 1.4 billion are fanatical about cricket and they have players to burn. Playing more internationals gives them plenty of chances against top opposition to build a team of experience, plus replacements. NZ being competitive is about the best you can expectagainst India.

Nothing wrong with giving credit where due. The Indians played brilliantly. Rahul and Iyer struck 50s at a strike rate of 200 while Bumrah conceded runs at just a shade over 7 runs-per-over-in a game where the overall run-rate was over 10 runs-per-over. Brilliant stuffthat.
Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were awesome as well. Was a good gameoverall!

@Richard Banger: Okay, so that's 11+ 6 (hit off the free hit) = 17 minus India's 6 = 11; and that was fairly gettable in the over that was in hand. My point: the extras did not cost BCs the match.* Like
