SCOTT HAMMOND/STUFF
Suicide and cancer prevention, as well as animals, are causes at the top of Tracey Merrett's list. Youth services, cancer, animals, mental health and heart disease: these are some of the causes Marlburians would support if they hit jackpot on Wednesday's Lotto. After Saturday's winning numbers were not struck, the Lotto Powerball has sky-rocketted to $42 million,
which could be the second largest Powerball prize in the history ofthe game.
Blenheim residents are in agreement that, with a prize that big, some should go to charity.SCOTT HAMMOND/STUFF
With the jackpot hitting $42 million on Wednesday, Redwoodtown Lotto owner Peter Matthews has been busier than usual. Although she said she would buy a Lotto ticket this time around, Blenheim woman Shannelle Ward said taking a whole $42 million for herself would be "greedy".READ MORE:
* Lotto Powerball jackpots to $42 million * Missing Lotto winner claims their $17.1 million * Missing millionaire: $17.1 million remains unclaimed "I'd pay off my house, support my family, and then a massive chunk ... probably to the SPCA, and then breast cancer," she said.Advertisement
Advertise with Stuff Purchasing a Lotto ticket on Tuesday morning, Richard Bowling said he would give "a big hunk" of a $42 million win to charity, mostly to local and smaller groups, he said. "With 42, you'd have to give half of it away - probably a mix ofthings," he said.
SCOTT HAMMOND/STUFF
Donna Brooke-Taylor would put money towards young people. "I don't need $20 million for the rest of my life, and nor does myfamily."
For Garry Stewart, it would be the Red Cross, the Heart Foundation orHospice.
Tracey Merrett was in agreement, and said she would put some money towards suicide and cancer prevention.SCOTT HAMMOND/STUFF
If the prize was claimed by a single winner on Wednesday, it would be the game's second largest win since Lotto began in 2001. "And animals probably - they get a pretty rough deal in this country sometimes," she said. "Maybe a million, if you've got 42 of them. Considering all of your family will want a million." Donna Brooke-Taylor was about to check her numbers from Saturday, and would grab a new Lotto ticket while she was there. She would donate money to the youth - "anything to do with the young ones" - but said it was also important to support family.SCOTT HAMMOND/STUFF
Irene Percy already knows what it's like to win big, and to contribute a big portion of it to charity. For Irene Percy, the question was not a hypothetical: she and her husband Graeme won the Heart Foundation lottery in 2016 and the Second division lotto the following year. Both times they donated money to the Heart Foundation, and variousother causes
,
including supporting the children they had fostered over the years. "I think it's important if you give, you receive," Percy said. "It's important for yourself as well as the community, and if you look after them they'll look after you."SCOTT HAMMOND/STUFF
Janelle White says buying a Lotto ticket can be considered a charitable donation. In spite of their lottery wins, the Percys continued to buy tickets each week "just random, no numbers" to support the Heart Foundation and the causes that Lotto NZ sponsored. They had also lobbied to have tickets for the Heart Foundation lotteryavailable
to purchase online.
With $42 million, Janelle White would give some to family, to charity and build an aquarium with the remainder. With 100 per cent of Lotto NZ's profits going towards Kiwi causes, she considered buying a lotto ticket to be a "charitable donation". Lotto NZ head of communications and corporate social responsibility Marie Winfield said Lotto NZ's profits went towards 3000 different causes, including Heart Kids, mobility dogs, Sport NZ and Film NZ. The Powerball had jack-potted 16 times since the beginning of the year, and if the prize was claimed by a single winner on Wednesday, it would be the game's second-largest win since Lotto began in 1987. Winfield said it was the first time in four years the Powerball had been over $40 million, since an Auckland couple won $44 million in2016.

I've already donated to charities by buying tickets over the years. I'll probably continue giving to charity, but not from the 50mil I'll be winning this weekend. I'll be investing it all, then I'll be able to keep on giving from the interest earned & so will my family when I'm gone.* Like

It's heart-breaking seeing people queue up at the Lotto shop clutching fistfuls of dollars who, if they're lucky, might get pocket money back once in a while, when there's a lottery which you **always** win every month **and** keep what you paid! At Kiwibank it's called a Notice Account My wife and I put our spare money into it. At the end of every month we "win" interest , and the money we put in is still ours!. (The interest changes from time to time, that's the lottery part). If we leave it there, next month we get interest on the interest. Do that for a year and what a Christmas you and the family can have.* Like

I'd still rather have a shot at $50 million plus. And yes, I have plans... and no, it ain't all for me either. Got family that need a hand up to buy a house. And that's a hand up, NOT a total gift to buy a house outright. Plus a number of charitable organisations would see some of my largesse. A little bit of play money for myself and invest the remainder for future generations of family and charities.* Like

Technically it isn't a lottery, its an investment. Bonus bonds is another matter altogether, it is definitely a lottery type draw there to try and win a prize every month.* Like

I'm not sure whether raising the previous cap of 30 million to 50 million before 'must win' and increasing the cost of tickets was a good idea, as bigger jackpots along with more expensive tickets maybe encourage people to spend more on what for most people will neverreturn anything.
Winning over 40 million means just leaving the money in the bank should be able to return over a million a year in interest if properly managed. That's enough to live well, and keep giving to charity everyyear indefinitely.
I think if I came into that sort of money, I'd be looking at models of how some of the more successful iwi trusts have developed intergenerational investment strategies that benefit members and their wider communities in the long term.* Like

I think apart from seriously compulsive gamblers most people have a limit on how much they are prepared to spend on weekly Lotto tickets. I certainly do. And I've broken that rule only 4 times, when the pool got seriously big. As in this Saturday's jackpot.* Like

Interesting how people think, if they've never had money before they're very short sighted. If properly invested, $42m could support many charities basically forever if you don't touch the capital. If you give it away, it's a one time deal, you no longer have the earning potential to keep giving.* Like

I'd donate to Dementia Canterbury and Dementia NZ - there is a huge wave of dementia heading our way and the community-based services are woefully underfunded.* Like

Just this afternoon me and my workmates at Dementia Waikato talked about what we'd do with 40M and each of us said give a couple of mil to our trust. I applaud your intent, and share it.* Like

I think this amount of money going to one ticket winner is disgusting..it should be capped and smaller prizes given to so manymore needy people.

It is capped. The cap is $50 million. What don't you get about that? Quite a number of years ago Lotto NZ decided that more people should win prizes. Their strategy, after having a "new" junior survey people (allegedly 50 people and the survey was a chat instead of a structured questionnaire) was to have 2 bonus balls. End result, people got turned off and many stopped playing. And the bonus ball amounts were pathetic. One guy I know who consistently got small amount winnings, won zero while the dual bonus ball system was in place. Once it reverted his winnings came back, and still do. Sure, only small amounts but he reckons he's ahead financially. I can't of course verify that but the Lotto shop he patronises says he seems to have the magic touch when it comes to numbers and winning small amounts. The even joke with him about it when he bowls up with his tickets.* Like
