Actress and activist Jane Fonda is coming to Kent State University for the May 4, 1970 commemoration weekend. Kent State University President Todd Diacon released the May 4 weekend commemorative events on Monday, including panel discussions, a scholarship benefit concert, the annual candlelight march and vigil, and Fonda’s speech. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the shootings, which killed four students and wounded nine. Diacon made the announcement at a Faculty Senate meeting in recognition of the 1970 faculty marshals, “whose quick thinking and wise actions saved many lives on May 4. We all stand on the shoulders of those faculty who acted in the face of enormous pressure and uncertainty and whose dedication to our students led to heroic efforts to conclude the quarter even though campus was closed. “In short, we’re rolling out the final schedule to this body to honor these professors, to honor their great work,” Diacon said. The weekend events will be held over four days, May 1-4, with each day emphasizing a different aspect of the May 4 story. May 1 will focus on the Vietnam anti-war movement; May 2, the impact of student activism; May 3, remembering the 50-year May 4 legacy; and May 4, a commemoration to honor and remember. “We will commemorate the passing of 50 years at a time when our country is divided, and noisily so. We have the opportunity to share the painful lessons of Kent State and point toward the benefit of dialogue and reconciliation, and remind everyone what happens when rancor and polarization replace reason and conversation,” Diaconsaid.
May 1 events will include a panel discussion on the role students played in documenting the May 4 shootings, which will include Pulitzer Prize winning photographer John Filo who captured the image of Mary Ann Vecchio screaming over Jeffrey Miller, and Howard Ruffner whose photograph of the shooting was on the cover of Life Magazine. Both were students at the time. There will also be a panel on the impact of the anti-war movement and screenings of “The War at Home” and “Fire in the Heartland” followed by audience discussions with thefilm makers.
REMEMBERING THE MAY 4, 1970, SHOOTINGS AT KENT STATE Photos: Remembering the May 4, 1970, shootings at Kent StateUniversity.
May 2 will feature panel discussions on activism and untold and personal stories of May 4, and for the first time, a benefit concert that will help fund four fully endowed scholarships to the School of Peace and Conflict Studies in memory of the four slain students, Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder. Diacon noted that the university’s first institutional response to the shooting was the creation of the Center for Peaceful Change, which preceded the School of Peace and Conflict Studies. The lineup, which Diacon anticipates will be released later this week, will include acts that represent “the era and the place.” “It was an early demand on our part that we have scholarships in their names. It’s long been sought, and we’re so grateful to see the university find a way to do that. This benefit is a long dream realized for us,” said Roseann “Chic” Canfora, May 4 witness and member of the 50th commemoration committee. May 3 will feature Eric Foner of Columbia University, one of the nation’s leading historians and author of “Second Founding.” “If you read Foner’s book, you realize that the things written into our constitution are only made real through human action and human judgement, and when we thought about the events of May 4, 1970 and freedom of speech, it was very appropriate,” Diacon said. Later that day, Fonda will be featured as the Presidential Speaker. According to Canfora, Fonda also came to Kent State the year after the shooting and participated in the candlelight vigil that year. “If you watch the HBO documentary on Jane Fonda that came out last year, one of the things she said very powerfully is that she does not regret having opposed the war in Vietnam, that it was absolutely the right thing to do, but she has regrets about the way she did it. It was a very meaningful moment that spoke to this goal we have of reconciliation,” Diacon said. May 3 events will conclude with the annual candlelight march at 11 p.m. and the silent vigil held from midnight until the noon May 4 commemoration ceremony, which will feature Laurence Tribe, a professor of constitutional law at Harvard University. In the morning on May 4, there will also be a breakfast honoring the faculty marshals andfaculty of 1970.
Canfora and 50th Commemoration Project Manager Rod Flauhaus noted that while the weekend events have been finalized, they anticipate several more new events being added throughout the year as more people find ways to participate in the commemoration. Flauhaus added that most of the weekend events will be free or relatively cheap. He anticipates that some panel events will be live streamed for people unable toattend.
“We have this important opportunity to model the values that we hold as our core values at Kent State: a fierce commitment to free speech, kindness and respect. On our campus, there will be individuals with different political ideologies, different understandings of what happened that day, and different interpretations of the meanings and legacies of those events, and we know that we will be guided by our core values as we present the various symposia, lectures and musical events from May 1-4,” Diacon said. “Even though it’s a milestone year, it still is a remarkable turning point. There were decades when we were working separately, but starting with President Warren making the commitment, and then watching President Diacon take it to a whole new level, a lot has happened to prove that we can do far more working together. For us, it will be the most meaningful commemoration ever because it charts a whole new forward looking path for May 4,” Canfora said. For a full list of weekend events and more events leading up to the weekend, visit www.kent.edu\may4kentstate50.
