(Image courtesy FC Cincinnati) CINCINNATI — After a failed, multi-year search to fill the attacking midfield role with an impact player, FC Cincinnatihas finally
landed one with the signing of midfielder Siem de Jong. The 31-year-old arrives on a free transfer from Dutch power Ajax and will occupy an international roster spot. He will be added to the club roster upon the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate andP1 Visa.
“We believe Siem will play an important role in adding to the final third and efficiency of our attack,” said general manager Gerard Nijkamp said in a team release. “Not only does he have an impressive intelligence and skillset, he has also played in some of the most prestigious competitions and has been a leader on and off the pitch throughout his career.” De Jong seems excited about the move despite the recent upheaval in Cincinnati in which Ron Jans stepped down as head coach following a racial slur investigation. “For me, when FC Cincinnati presented their plan of how the club is growing and how they want to build the team here in the upcoming years, I felt this would be a good experience for me,” de Jong said. “Hopefully, I can help the club and the players to build somethingspecial here.”
FCC have yet to decide whether de Jong will be signed as a designated player or if his contract will be bought down using allocation money. Should he be classified as a DP, he would occupy the club’s third and final slot following the offseason acquisitions of Yuya Kuboand Jürgen Locadia
.
The club has until the 2020 MLS Roster Compliance date on Feb. 28 tomake that decision.
Additionally, de Jong being handed the No. 11 shirt likely signals the departure of Jamaican forward Darren Mattocks. Mattocks, who is facing felony charges in Pennsylvania related to insurance fraud, has not been with the team during preseason training after Jans indicated he is not in the club’splans.
De Jong had made five appearances and scored three goals for Ajax this season prior to joining the Orange-and-Blue. In total, the midfielder has made 347 career appearances, tallying 102 goals and adding 59 assists. He’s also played at prestigious clubs such as PSV Eindhoven in Holland, Newcastle United of the English Premier League, and Australia’s Sydney FC in his 13-year professional career. Cincy will open regular season play on Sunday, March 1, against the New York Red Bulls.
Nijkamp indicated that de Jong would be unlikely to appear in that match. The player will require a return to the Netherlands to complete the necessary paperwork to wrap up his move to MLS.COMMENTS
