Mais comment ce camp d’extermination a-t-il été créé ? Avril 1940 : Himmler, le commandant de la SS, ordonne d’aménager un camp à Oswiecim, dans le sud de la Pologne.
En allemand, cette ville s’appelle Auschwitz.
En juin 1940, un premier transport de prisonniers polonais arrive. Un an plus tard, le camp regroupe 11 000 détenus. À la même période, Himmler demande son agrandissement et ordonne la construction d’un second camp sur le site du village voisin de Birkenau. À l’origine, il est prévu pour accueillir des prisonniers de guerre. Mais quelques mois plus tard, Birkenau est désigné pour devenir le camp de rassemblement et d’extermination des juifs d’Europe de l’Ouest. Celle-ci démarre au début de l'année 1942. UNE ENTREPRISE DE MORT PROGRAMMÉE Au moins 1,3 million de personnes sont déportées à Auschwitz:
des juifs, des Polonais, des prisonniers de guerre soviétiques, des Roms, des Sintis, des témoins de Jéhovah ou encore des homosexuels. Ce sont des hommes, des femmes, des enfants, des vieillards... Au total, 1,1 million de personnes y sont assassinées, dont 90 % dejuifs.
La plupart trouvent la mort dans les chambres à gaz utilisant du Zyklon B. Des médecins nazis procèdent aussi à des expériences médicales sur des déportés. D’autres sont sélectionnés pour le travail forcé. Un troisième camp est créé, celui de Monowitz autour de l’usine IG Farben. Les prisonniers tentent de survivre au gré du bon vouloir des soldats SS ou des kapos chargés de les encadrer. Face à l’avancée de l’Armée rouge, Himmler décide à la fin de l’année 1944 d’arrêter les opérations de gazage. Les installations de mise à mort sont démantelées. Le camp est évacué dans l’urgence. Le 17 janvier 1945, débutent les marches de la mort. Près de 60 000 prisonniers sont entraînés sur les routes en plein hiver. Le camp est finalement libéré le 27 janvier par des soldats de l’Armée rouge. À l’intérieur, ils ne découvrent que 7 000 survivants.
