Bayern Munich will take a commanding lead to Bavaria after an emphatic 3-0 win at Chelsea in the Round of 16 first leg. Here are five things we learnt from the Champions League knockout

CHELSEA HAS A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB It is very hard to see Chelsea coming back from this. The team was completely outplayed by Bayern and could have lost by an even wider margin. And this was at home. To make matters worse, Marcos Alonso and Jorginho will both miss the second leg through suspension. Alonso was sent off for foolishly putting his hand in Robert Lewandowski’s face and Jorginho’s yellow card was for dissent. In the Allianz Arena the Blues need to score three times – and not concede – just to force extra time. Stranger things have happened in soccer, but you wouldn’t bet on it. BAYERN LOVES PLAYING IN LONDON

In its last seven away matches against English teams, Bayern has won three times, all in London. In those three matches, the Bavarians have scored a barely-believable 15 times. At this stage of the 2016/17 Champions League Bayern thrashed Arsenal 5-1 on their own turf and in the group stages of this season’s Champions League it smashed seven past Tottenham in a 7-2 victory. One player who apparently enjoys playing in the UK capital more than most, is Bayern winger Serge Gnabry. The former Arsenal player has scored six Champions League goals this season – four at Spurs in October and two today at Stamford Bridge.

N’GOLO KANTE IS A CRUCIAL COG IN CHELSEA’S MIDFIELD Kante has not had much luck with injuries this season and, when he doesn’t play, you realize how much Chelsea miss him. Lampard picked the same team that beat Spurs at the weekend, but today the midfield two of Jorginho and Kovačić were no match for Thiago Alcantara and

Kimmich.

Bayern found plenty of space in midfield and, with quick wingers and one of the best strikers in the world, the German champions will punish you. Kante, of course, is not easy to replace but with the benefit of hindsight, Lampard will wonder if a more conservative formation would have produced a different result. BAYERN’S ATTACK IS A MATCH FOR ANY DEFENCE There’s the pace and trickery of Kingsley Coman and Gnabry, the rejuvenated Thomas Muller and the deadly Lewandowski. All four impressed at Stamford Bridge with Gnabry and Lewandowski linking

particularly well.

Muller, who looks back to something like his best under manager Hansi Flick, nearly opened the scoring in the first half with a clever header that rebounded off the bar. When it arrived, the opening goal looked so simple but was expertly crafted. Gnabry played it to Lewandowski who unselfishly squared it back for Gnabry to tap in. The second was a ruthless counter-attack where the pair again combined for Gnabry to finish cooly. Lewandowski got his reward for an excellent performance with Bayern’s third. ALPHONSO DAVIES HAS A BIG FUTURE That third goal was made by Bayern left-back Alphonso Davies, who again showed why he is such a special talent. The 19-year-old Canadian international demonstrated his explosive pace to race down the left side and square the ball for Lewandowski to tap in. Davies was up and down the left all evening, terrifying Chelsea’s defence with his pace. He is still young and does not always make the right decision, but he also showed glimpses of the maturing defensive side of his game. In the first half, when it looked like Mason Mount might get away from him, Davies sprinted back and muscled Mount off the ball. If he keeps playing like this, Davies is on the way to becoming one of the world’s best left backs. Follow me on Twitter .
