Owen Farrell was off colour as his kicking game suffered with Storm Ciara swirling in Edinburgh.

Ellis Genge’s late try secured victory for Eddie Jones’ men, though, as they got their Six Nations campaign on track following last week’s defeat to France. The loosehead prop was helped over the line by Tom Curry and Maro Itoje to make up for Farrell’s hopes of his own try being dashed by the Television Match Official minutes earlier. Adam Hastings’ 78th-minute penalty only reduced England’s margin of victory in the end as the beaten World Cup finalists go some points

SEAN MAITLAND – 6. A spectator for the majority of a game destined by Storm Ciara's visit to Murrayfield to be played in other areas. HUW JONES – 6. Fronted up well in defence but only had one opportunity to show his jet heels in attack before being substituted. SAM JOHNSON - 7. Monster hit on Jonny May from the kick-off and busy throughout in the Scotland midfield. Punched above his weight.

BLAIR KINGHORN – 6. One useful kick return in the first period but could not break the shackles on counter-attack. ADAM HASTINGS – 6. Kicked his goals but unable to stamp any authority on the game. Would Scotland have fared better with Finn Russell at stand-off? It wasn't a Russell sort of day. ALI PRICE - 7. Looked dangerous around the ruck and box-kicked accurately on the whole despite the challenge of the conditions. RORY SUTHERLAND – 6. Barnstorming second half break pitched camp for Scotland's first points of the game but creaked a little in the scrum. FRASER BROWN – 6. Nuggety and fiercely committed but his replacement Stuart McInally offered more when he replaced the Glasgow hooker. Hands let the big tight-head down when Scotland could have done with him punching holes before he was withdrawn. SCOTT CUMMINGS - 5. Indisciplined start coughing up two penalties in the opening ten minutes to England for the same offence. JONNY GRAY – 7. Relentless workhorse who gave everything as always despite taking a bang to the shoulder early on. Will be a huge asset to Exeter next season. JAMES RITCHIE – 6. Grafting contribution but although he never stopped throughout, England's back row edged a grim contest. HAMISH WATSON – 7. High-energy display in topping the Scotland tackle count from the English-born flanker who was invalided out of the World Cup after just 37 minutes. MAGNUS BRADBURY – 5. Struggled to make an imprint on his recall after cuddle from his mum – the president of the SRU – in the line-ups before kick-off.

GEORGE FURBANK – 6. Looked more like his Northampton self after a difficult debut in Paris last weekend but still did not give off entirely positive vibes. JONNY MAY – 6. Second half charge down which could have brought an England try summed up his puppy-dog enthusiasm on a day when it was better not to have the ball. JONATHAN JOSEPH – 6. England could have done with Manu Tuilagi but his stand-in did a decent defensive job with little chance to show his

running game.

OWEN FARRELL – 5. Low kicking percentage but hardly surprising in a tempest. Should have been moved to stand-off by Eddie Jones to add

more control.

ELLIOT DALY – 6. Made one first break down the left but contributed to the kicking malaise with the fourth punt that went straight into touch in quick succession. Wasteful with his tactical kicking and threw a horrible pass to Jonny May when England were under pressure in their

own 22.

WILLI HEINZ – 3. First Six Nations start at the age of 33 but no visible improvement on Ben Youngs. Scrum-half starting to look a problem area for England. MAKO VUNIPOLA – 6. Good to have one Vunipola back in the England ranks at least although not one of Mako's more potent trucking-up

days.

JAMIE GEORGE – 8. Tremendous tackling stint from the England hooker. Horrible throwing day so should be cut some slack for the couple that veered off line. Fulcrum of dominant scrum. KYLE SINCKLER – 7. Won his scrum battle and produced important rip on Jonny Gray defused one menacing Scotland second half attack.

MARO ITOJE – 8. Breakdown nuisance who stopped Scotland at source like a one-man vice and hit hard and often in the tackle. Deserved better from his half-backs for his efforts. GEORGE KRUIS – 7. Looked at home in a slow-paced game played at close range. Lineout go-to man who proved a disruptive influence to

the Scots.

LEWIS LUDLAM – 6. Stole the headlines with his tough talking before the game but not so much during it before being replaced with half an

hour to go.

SAM UNDERHILL – 8. All-action display from the Bath flanker whose breakdown work and tackling deservedly earned him the man of the match

award.

TOM CURRY – 8. Evidently learns quickly. Much more convincing performance at No 8 than in Paris. Carried well for England and thumped the Scots back in the tackle.
