WHAT IS LENT?

Lent is the period of 40 days before Easter in the Christian calendar. This period is a time when worshippers are expected to reflect and prepare for Easter celebrations. Christians observe the 40 days of Lent by replicating the sacrifice and withdrawal undertaken by Jesus Christ, by fasting, both from food

and festivities.

means “spring”.

In Old German lenzin, lengizin, and lenzo are related words to the term Lent, which probably derived from the same root as “long” and referring to “the lengthening days,” as the earth moves from the winter solstice toward the spring equinox. WHEN IS LENT?

The days of Lent can differ according to the different Christian

denominations.

In Roman Catholicism, Lent always begins on Ash Wednesday, which this year is Wednesday, February 26. Ash Wednesday is celebrated the day after Shrove Tuesday, commonly known as Pancake Day in the UK. Elsewhere in the world Shrove Tuesday also goes by the name of Mardi Gras, which is French translates as “Fat Tuesday”. The 40 days of Lent conclude on Holy Thursday Evening, before the Evening Mass of God’s Supper, which comprises 44 days, which means it officially ends on Thursday, April 9. The Lenten fast excludes Sundays and continues through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, totalling 40 days.
