SeaWorld San Diego trainers no longer surf on the backs of dolphins or stand on the snouts of the marine animals during shows, but the Southern California theme park says the changes have nothing to do with protests by animal rights activists. SeaWorld San Diego trainers no longer demonstrate dolphin surfing or stand on dolphin rostrums, theme park officials said. SeaWorld San Diego removed dolphin surfing from the Dolphin Days show nearly two years ago, officials said. SeaWorld San Diego trainers stopped standing on dolphin rostrums during the show late in 2019,officials said.
SeaWorld said the changes to the Dolphin Days show were not influenced by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or other “ill-informed activists.” “SeaWorld is continually evolving its animal presentations to create the best experience for both guests and our animals,” SeaWorld said in a statement. “As an accredited zoological facility, our leadership solely determines the content and format of our presentations and is not influenced in any way by the actions of ill-informed activists, who are seemingly more interested in their profile and fund raising than they are the welfare of animals.” PETA nonetheless declared victory in its campaign to end cruelty toward dolphins at SeaWorld. “SeaWorld has stopped treating dolphins like surfboards and will soon stop making trainers stand on their faces in demeaning circus-style shows,” PETA said on its website.RELATED ARTICLES

The San Diego marine park saw a 20 percent boost in visitors in 2018 after being battered by attendance declines over the previous five years. The reason: The 2013 release of the “Blackfish” documentary which was critical of SeaWorld’s treatment of captivewhales.
During the Orca Encounter show,
SeaWorld San Diego trainers stay out of the water and use hand signals and whistles to direct the killer whales to perform behaviors. -------------------------* Report an error
