Kidsafe Queensland CEO Susan Teerds said small children were most at risk from dog bites, which were the most common animal attackcomplaints.
"Don't assume just because you have had this beautiful dog that has been perfectly behaved for years that it is going to love everybody,"she said.
"Dogs get very jealous and they don't understand toddlers trying to hug them around their neck, ride on their back, pull their tail and try to take their biscuit out of their mouth." Ms Teerds said a three-year-old Brisbane child was taken to hospital last year after their dog started "ripping at their face". "The child had been happily playing with their dog for the past three years then for no reason it just said, 'I don't want you here anymore'and attacked them.
"Kids do not respect dogs' boundaries and don't know how to read their body language, like when their ears go down and they back up and baretheir teeth.
"They think dogs are like teddy bears and go in for big pats and hugs, but a lot of dogs don't understand cuddles." Ms Teerds said it was safer to keep young children and dogs separated. A Brisbane City Council spokeswoman said one in every five Brisbane households owned a dog. "Council is focused on keeping Brisbane a great place to live, work and relax, and it encourages residents to be responsible pet owners,"she said.
"Council proactively patrols areas to educate people on responsible pet ownership and to enforce the Animals Local Law where non-compliance is observed. "Council responds to reports of dog attacks or aggressive dogs 24 hours a day and will investigate all attacks reported and, if necessary, can take action against the owner, including seizing thedog."
Manly West and Moorooka were next on the list after the top three, both with 11 reported attacks. The northside suburbs with the most reported attacks on humans were Bracken Ridge, Chermside and Zillmere, each with nine reports.*
