BERNIE SANDERS WINS NEVADA DEMOCRATIC CAUCUSES AND TAKES LEAD IN RACE TO BECOME DONALD TRUMP'S OPPONENTBy Peter Marsh

Here's a simple guide to what that means RELATED STORY: Americans are about to vote — but not for president. Here's what you need to know RELATED STORY: Will Trump win the presidency again? Here's when we'llknow the answer
Bernie Sanders has won the Nevada Democratic caucuses and taken the lead in the party's race to face US President Donald Trump at November's presidential election. It's the second-straight victory for the senator from Vermont (and arguably his third depending on how you read the still-under-contention Iowa results). Here are five takeaways from the latest stop in the Democratic primarycampaign.
1. THERE'S NOW NO DOUBT — BERNIE IS THE FRONTRUNNER Three top finishes — one a comprehensive victory?
CHECK.
A double-digit lead in national polls? CHECK. A fundraising operation rivalled only by the billionaires spending money out of their own pockets? CHECK. PHOTO: Bernie Sanders delivered a fired-up victory speech to a raucous crowed after his Nevada win. (Reuters: Mike Segar) Senator Sanders was expected to do well in Nevada. And in a race that's been upended since voters started heading to the polls three weeks ago, living up to expectations counts for plenty. > "We will not only defeat Trump, we will transform this country," he > told a lively crowd of supporters that had the same energy as those > at one of the President's rallies. His win tonight UNEQUIVOCALLY MAKES HIM THE FRONTRUNNER IN THIS RACE. But there is plenty of time left. It's up to everyone else to use it to catch up if they can. 2. BIDEN PICKED HIMSELF UP OFF THE CANVAS — BUT NOT MUCH MORE THANTHAT
At the start of February, former vice-president Joe Biden was the clear frontrunner to take on Mr Trump. Then people started voting. The first two stops WERE A DISASTER FOR BIDEN no matter how you sliced it. His clear second place tonight was much needed, even if it was a distant one behind Sanders's runaway win. > "We're alive and coming back and we're gonna win," he told> supporters.
The RESULT BUYS HIS CAMPAIGN SEVEN DAYS OF BREATHING ROOM heading into a state — South Carolina — that he's been describing as a"firewall".
It's TOO EARLY TO DECLARE "BIDEN'S BACK". But it's ALSO TOO EARLY TO WRITE HIM OFF as well. 3. REALITY ARRIVES FOR KLOBUCHAR AND BUTTIGIEG The performances of Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar in Iowa and New Hampshire were ALWAYS QUALIFIED with notes about their polling with American minorities. WE FOUND OUT WHY in Nevada — the first state with big populations of African-Americans and Hispanics.PHOTO:
Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg are struggling with voters of colour.(AP: John Locher)
As of publication, it's borderline whether Mr Buttigieg will qualify to receive delegates from Nevada or not. Senator Klobuchar has nochance.
The longer this race goes on, the more states look like Nevada than Iowa or New Hampshire. Both candidates NEED TO FIND A WAY TO APPEAL TO DEMOCRATIC MINORITYVOTERS. And fast.
4. CAN THE MODERATES PICK A CHAMPION? Bernie Sanders APPEARS TO HAVE ALL BUT LOCKED UP THE PROGRESSIVE LANE of the Democratic party. THE TRUMP CHALLENGERS YOU SHOULD WATCH The field of Democrats running for president is thinning. Here's who'sleft
But behind his shared win in Iowa and close victory in New Hampshire there was a thought — that if those who preferred a more moderate candidate could pick a single candidate, Sanders's 20-30 per cent of the vote wouldn't be enough to carry him to the nomination. Nevada has made that A MUCH MORE URGENT PROSPECT for those who believe the best way to defeat Donald Trump is with a moderate candidate. Mr Biden, Mr Buttigieg and Senator Klobuchar ARE SPLITTING THE MODERATE VOTE THREE WAYS. The addition of Michael Bloomberg on Super Tuesday will SPLIT IT A FOURTH. It remains to be seen if any one of them can (or even want to) make this a two-way race with Senator Sanders. 5. IS ELIZABETH WARREN RIGHT THAT HER DEBATE HAS HER BACK IN THE RACE? PHOTO: Elizabeth Warren has another chance on the debate stage on Wednesday AEST. (Reuters:Jason Redmond)
Elizabeth Warren wasn't in Nevada when the race was called tonight. Instead, she spoke to a crowd of supporters in Seattle. She told them that "since Wednesday night" — where she delivered a blistering performance on the debate stage in Nevada — HER SUPPORT HAD BEEN GROWING. Then she launched into a re-run of her best attacks on MichaelBloomberg.
The senator from Massachusetts had a poor night at these caucuses BUT A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE STATE VOTED EARLY, well BEFORE HER BREAKOUT DEBATE performance. She might yet be right that she's having a resurgence. WE'LL FIND OUT IN SEVEN DAYS' TIME WHEN SOUTH CAROLINA VOTERS HEAD TO THE POLLS with that debate performance in their minds. See how the Nevada results arrived in our blog below.BLOG

There are really only two minor questions left now: * How big will Bernie Sanders's win be? * Will Pete Buttigieg make the 15 per cent threshold? PETER MARSH earlier today at 4:14amSun 23 Feb 2020, 4:14am (Updated: earlier today at 4:14amSun 23 Feb 2020, 4:14am)*
EARLIER TODAY AT 4:09AMSUN 23 FEB 2020, 4:09AM (UPDATED: EARLIER TODAY AT 4:09AMSUN 23 FEB 2020, 4:09AM) A NOTE ON SUPERDELEGATES You guys are all in on that contested convention! Some quick answersfor you:
> did not the Superdelegates determine the outcome of the last > Democrat nomination?>
> -SCOTT
The superdelegates didn't decide the vote last time Scott. Hillary Clinton was able to clinch the nomination with enough of the regular delegates on June 7 in 2016. There was a lot of talk about them though as Bernie made the race much more competitive than expected. > Sanders seems to be in the box seat now. But if he doesn't get the > 1,991 delegates & there is a contested convention, who do you think > the super delegates will back?>
> -ADAM
I HONESTLY CAN'T TELL YOU ADAM. The conventional wisdom is that the superdelegates, being senior Democratic party officials, are in favour of the status quo (ie. not Bernie Sanders). But what if Sanders goes into the Convention with a clear majority (like if he had 1500+ delegates and no one else had any more than than 600 or so)? Who's to say they wouldn't just get behind the clear will of the Democratic electorate? The only thing I'll say for sure is this: IF SUPERDELEGATES ARE ASKED TO BE THE DECIDING FACTOR IN THIS RACE, WE'LL BE HEADED FOR A MESS THAT'LL NOT EVEN I'M READY FOR. PETER MARSH earlier today at 4:09amSun 23 Feb 2020, 4:09am (Updated: earlier today at 4:09amSun 23 Feb 2020, 4:09am)*
EARLIER TODAY AT 3:59AMSUN 23 FEB 2020, 3:59AM (UPDATED: EARLIER TODAY AT 3:59AMSUN 23 FEB 2020, 3:59AM) SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS I got James Glenday to dig into these for you. HERE ARE HIS ANSWERS: > It looks like the Klo-memtum has slowed, what will this mean going> forward?
>
> -LOGAN
It was always hard to see how she had a realistic path to the Democratic Presidential nomination. It is even harder tonight. She did "well" and finished third in New Hampshire … but third is obviously, just, third.
If she hangs on until Super Tuesday, she might be able to win her home state of Minnesota and do OK in places like Arkansas. But unless her support collapses, her continued presence in the race is likely to split the moderate vote a bit. > Is Steyer actually still in the race? When will he drop out?>
> -STEVE
Yes he is! And good question. Not yet apparently. Watch this video and tell him he's dreaming! Also, Tulsi Gabbard is still in there too, though I'll admit I had to double-check. After more than a year of this, my interest in fringe contenders is pretty low! PETER MARSH earlier today at 3:59amSun 23 Feb 2020, 3:59am (Updated: earlier today at 3:59amSun 23 Feb 2020, 3:59am)*

That's where no Democrat gets the 1,991 delegates needed to become the nominee by the time all these primaries and caucuses are finished. Mr Yang, a former candidate in this race, said a contested Convention is now the "most likely" outcome. It's also the most likely outcome according to the FiveThirtyEight Democratic Primary Forecast. Basically ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN AT THAT POINT. Superdelegates start to weigh in. Deals can be made between candidates. Delegates can switch allegiances. It'll be a HUGE mess. It'll be pretty notable if Pete Buttigieg is able to sneak about the 15 per cent threshold to actually grab some delegates from the state. We'll see if that holds. PETER MARSH earlier today at 3:33amSun 23 Feb 2020, 3:33am (Updated: earlier today at 3:33amSun 23 Feb 2020, 3:33am)*
EARLIER TODAY AT 3:24AMSUN 23 FEB 2020, 3:24AM (UPDATED: EARLIER TODAY AT 3:24AMSUN 23 FEB 2020, 3:24AM) HOW JAMES GLENDAY SAW THE RESULT TONIGHT I asked the ABC's North America Correspondent James Glenday to give me a read on what this result means for the rest of the race. Here's whathe had to say:
> Two take-outs from tonight.>
> 1. This is a really major victory for Bernie Sanders and puts him > firmly in the box-seat heading into a crucial few weeks in this> election cycle.
>
> Tonight's result demonstrates his broad appeal in a diverse state > and his whopping projected margin of victory suggests he is winning > over some moderate voters.>
> If he performs as strongly as opinion polls suggest he will on Super > Tuesday on the 3rd of March, Bernie could build a very big lead and > be hard to catch.>
> 2. It also is now increasingly unclear how the divided centre-left > wing of the party will actually stop the progressive Senator's march > to the Presidential nomination.>
> Who is the clear centre-left or centrist alternative to Sanders? > Bloomberg, Biden, Buttigieg … Klobuchar?>
> Even if one of them does emerge as the obvious alternative – and > the others drop out — will Democratic voters actually coalesce > around them during a long, drawn-out primary campaign? EARLIER TODAY AT 3:17AMSUN 23 FEB 2020, 3:17AM (UPDATED: EARLIER TODAY AT 3:17AMSUN 23 FEB 2020, 3:17AM) THIS LINE SOUNDS FAMILIAR... Of course, "MINI-MIKE" IS THE NICKNAME DONALD TRUMP has given MichaelBloomberg.

She's in Seattle, not in Nevada. She also started by congratulating Bernie Sanders. She then immediately turned back to her debate performance a few days ago. "Since Wednesday night our support has been growing everywhere," shesaid.
Instead of targeting the Democratic frontrunner, like Pete Buttigieg did earlier, Senator Warren went after Michael Bloomberg, and called him a "threat". She targeted his claim that he's the safe choice tobeat Donald Trump.
"He's not safe, he's just rich," she said. Her crowd is booing every mention of Bloomberg's name, and laughing at every shot she takes at him. PETER MARSH earlier today at 3:09amSun 23 Feb 2020, 3:09am (Updated: earlier today at 3:09amSun 23 Feb 2020, 3:09am)Show more posts
