REVIEW ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS AROUND THE WORLD The index provides the foundations for governments to improve animal protection standards. By reviewing legislation around the world, countries will be able to create a roadmap for change, helping to protect billions of animals worldwide. What’s more, through improving legislation, countries will help their people too. ANIMALS IN FARMING: SUPPORTING 70 BILLION ANIMALS The global farming challenge. The treatment of farm animals is the world’s biggest animal welfare issue – and it’s getting bigger. By 2050, livestock production will be twice what it was in 2000. Right now, more than 70 billion animals are farmed for food each year – two-thirds in conditions that mean they can’t move freely or live GROUND-BREAKING ANIMAL PROTECTION INDEX ASSESSES ANIMAL The Animal Protection Index ranks countries on their commitment to protect animals in their legislation, improve animal welfare and recognise animal sentience.. The index shows that many countries are found lacking in terms of animal welfare, due to issues ranging from intensive farming and illegal wildlife trafficking to the culling ofstray animals.

The COVID-19 pandemic is believed to have originated in a 'wet market' where wild animals were being sold. But these markets are part the global wildlife trade: a much bigger system that allows and encourages wild animals to be treated as commodities for the sake of profit. JOIN THE CAMPAIGN TO END WILDLIFE CRUELTY By the time tourist come to ride an elephant, it may look at peace, but this is because it’s spirit has been broken. The bullhook used permanently reminds the animal of human dominance. The cruelty does not end after the crush. When not performing or used for rides most elephants are kept on chains, unable to socially interact with oneanother.
HOW THE TOURISM INDUSTRY EXPLOITS WILD ANIMALS FOR PROFIT In Thailand, people are paying 700 baht ($20 USD) to pet a tiger cub and capture that “special moment” with these animals - unaware of the true cost. But the owners of these type of establishments are well aware of what they are doing and rely on this unintended ignorance to generate profit. We’re spreading awareness of the abuse that’s ANIMAL WELFARE MATTERS: SEE HOW YOUR COUNTRY TREATS Holding countries to account. For the API, we assessed the animal welfare policies and legislation of 50 countries, and ranked them from A (the highest score) to G. . Shockingly, no country obtained an ‘A’ grade.
