CAN I USE AN EXISTING WOOD FLOOR AS A SUBFLOOR? Yes, you can install over an existing wood floor, provided it meets some important conditions. First, make sure doing so won't create problems with height differences at areas such as transitions with other rooms and stairs. Then, be sure the existing floor is flat, clean, dry, structurally sound, free of squeaks and free of protrudingfasteners.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUBFLOORS FOR ENGINEERED FLOORS A: This is a good question, because one of the major selling points of engineered hardwood flooring is its versatility with many kinds of subfloors. The secret behind this versatility is its dimensional stability, which comes from its composition. Most engineered hardwood flooring is three-ply or five-ply. STEP BY STEP: HOW TO GET A CONCRETE SLAB READY FOR WOOD Step 1: First, test the moisture content of the slab to make sure it's ready for wood flooring installation. Never install over a slab that's less than 30 days old. To test, there are several options, including moisture meters, poly film tests and phenolphthalein tests. If any indicate moisture, use a calcium chloride test. STEP BY STEP: APPLYING A WAX FINISH ON A WOOD FLOOR Step 1. Sand the floor as you would to prepare for any finish and apply stain, if desired. Mix shellac and denatured alcohol in a 50/50 mix. Because you're using shellac, take all precautions with any type of electric or gas ignition, and use an OSHA-approved respirator. WHAT CAUSES MYSTERIOUS BLACK SPOTS IN WOOD FLOORS? To confirm that metal particles could cause such black spots, I needed to research the effects of combined wood, chemicals, and metal. Following is what I learned. Three things are needed to make ferric oxide (rust): iron, water (moisture) and oxygen. Common red-colored rust comes from hematite (a mineral form of iron (III) oxide, Fe2O3). WHAT IS REALLY CAUSING WHITE LINE SYNDROME? Far less common than white lines from peeling is what some manufacturers refer to as "real" WLS. This happens when the finish stretches over a gap that develops when wood flooring boards contract. Just like a black garbage bag stretched too far, stretched areas of finish over the gaps turn white. WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE MULTIPLE MEASUREMENTS OF BOARD SPANS Wood flooring expert Mickey Moore explains why taking multiple measurements of board spans before installation can avoid problems, and what they tell you after the floor is installed.
