MountainTrue, the I (heart) Pisgah Coalition and other forest lovers delivered the Valentine’s cards, flowers and other expressions of love and affection to the Asheville headquarters of the Pisgah-Nantahala national forests. (Photo credit: WLOS staff) ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Local nonprofits gathered Valentine's Day cards that encourage forest officials to adopt a plan that best protects Western North Carolina woodlands. On Wednesday, MountainTrue, the I (heart) Pisgah Coalition and other forest lovers delivered the Valentine’s cards, flowers and other expressions of love and affection to the Asheville headquarters of the Pisgah-Nantahala national forests. The cards come as a draft of the new management plan for Nantahala and Pisgah national forests was released. A 90-day public comment period on the plan will begin Friday. "The U.S. Forest Service really needs the input of the public to make sure they get the plan right," MountainTrue public lands biologistJosh Kelly said.
The proposed plan is built on significant public engagement and the best available science to guide forest management for the next 15 years, a news release from the U.S. Forest Service said. The recognizes the multiple uses of national forests including recreation, timber, water, wilderness and wildlife habitat. The draft environmental impact statement considers the economic, environmental and social impacts of forest management activities. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p "Each Valentine card is a message of love for our forests from a member of the public asking the Forest Service to adopt a management plan that protects the unique qualities of Nantahala and Pisgah national forests so that people who care about recreation, ecological restoration, natural areas, clean water, wildlife and local economies are all satisfied with the plan," a news release from MountainTruesaid.
NEWSMAKERS FORUM: FUTURE OF PISGAH, NANTAHALA NATIONAL FORESTS INNORTH CAROLINA
The nonprofit is encouraging people to make their opinion known. "This will allow us to focus on ecosystems and allow us to partner with others more effectively and also to recognize all of our shared goals," U.S. Forest Service's Michelle Aldridge said. The proposed plan describes how the Forest Service will increase forest restoration, generate more jobs and economic development in local communities, and promote sustainable use of the national forests. The draft EIS presents four alternative approaches to managing the forests that offer different ways to make progress towards multiple goals and be sensitive to special places. "These drafts are significantly different from the early plan materials we shared in 2017 because we've incorporated public feedback received since then," Aldridge said. "Using public input, we've re-written parts of the plan, changed management area boundaries, and added a new chapter about places and uses on each part of the forest. We built alternatives based upon what we heard were shared values to offer win-win solutions and minimize polarization." THE DRAFTS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE HERE. The
formal comment period ends May 14, 2020. Public comments are most helpful when they include detailed information about specific places and uses of the forest. CLICK HERE TO COMMENT ONLINE.
PUBLIC MEETINGS WILL BE HELD ON THE FOLLOWING DATES FOR PARTICIPANTS TO TALK WITH PLANNING TEAM MEMBERS: * 5:30-8:30 p.m. March 10 at Foothills Conference Center, 2128 S. Sterling St., Morganton. * 5:30-8:30 p.m. March 16 at Rogow Family Community Room, Brevard Library, 212 S Gaston St., Brevard. * 5:30-8:30 p.m. March 19 at the Brasstown Community Center, 255 Settawig Road, Brasstown. * 5:30-8:30 p.m. March 24 at First Presbyterian Church's Tartan Hall, 26 Church St., Franklin. "We heard from a wide range of people and groups who use, depend on and appreciate the forests as we developed the plan," Allen Nicholas, Forest Supervisor of the National Forests in North Carolina, said in a news release. "We're sharing this proposed plan so the public can review it and provide additional information before the plan isfinalized."
