Ltd. at their Gorton Foundry, Manchester in 1902 to a compact and sturdy design capable of handling the trains on this steeply graded railway. The pair coped with all the traffic on the line from its opening in 1903 to closure in 1956. OUR HISTORY
Although the 1914 - 18 War brought a surge of business, it fell away again in the 1920s. In 1922 the Cambrian Railways was merged into the Great Western Railway and they absorbed the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway Company in 1923. It made little difference to traffic; indeed a competing bus service (owned by the GWR) reduced passengersto

The two original locomotives, No. 1 The Earl and No. 2 the Countess, were built by Beyer Peacock & Co. Ltd. at their Gorton Foundry, Manchester in 1902 to a compact and sturdy design capable of handling the trains on this steeply graded railway. The pair coped with all the traffic on the line from its opening in 1903 to closure in 1956. MEMBERSHIP - WELSHPOOL & LLANFAIR LIGHT RAILWAY The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway was opened in 1903 to connect the agricultural valley community to the national network. It made nobody rich but opened up the area, offering access to distant markets and allowing farming to prosper. LOCATION - WELSHPOOL & LLANFAIR LIGHT RAILWAY Getting to the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway could not be easier. Both of our main stations are located adjacent to the A458 main road. Welshpool Raven Square station (Postcode for Raven Square is SY21 7LT) is at the west end of the town (follow the brown signs or A458 Machynlleth / Dolgellau).FISH & CHIP TRAIN
Your journey will take approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, passing the rolling hills and alongside the Banwy river for much of the trip. When we arrive at Welshpool, Food options are fish and chips, sausage and chips and vegetarian. You will select your preference in our booking system. Train departs at 18:00 and returns at approximately20:15.

Many of our volunteers have been with us for years and have made life-long friends through the railway, with some continuing to visit us despite moving great distances away. WELCOME
Welcome to the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway. Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service for all the family and a welcome change from the rush of every day life. Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside. Most of our trains are steam hauled, either by one of our unique original locomotives or one from abroad. The carriages too are special; those in regular use being from Hungary and Austria with access to the enclosed seating area via an open balcony - a great way to watch the world go by.ANNOUNCEMENTS/NEWS
