The Lancers built a double-digit lead after the opening quarter and outscored Lakehead in each quarter to advance to Saturday’s quarter-final in St. Catharines against the No. 7-ranked BrockBadgers.
Kayah Clarke paced the Windsor offence with 21 points and had a team-leading nine rebounds as the Lancers outrebounded the Thunderwolves by a 46-23 margin. Harriet Carey came off the bench to score 17 points for the Lancers while Oivia Osamusali finished with 14 points and Erin Kenny added 10points.
LANCERS BOUNCED
The University of Windsor Lancers men’s basketball team’s season came to an end on Wednesday after a 94-66 loss to the No. 7-ranked Laurentian Voyageurs in OUA playoff action in Sudbury. Windsor fell behind by 17 points after the first quarter and could not pull back into the game. Thomas Kennedy had 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds to lead the Lancers. Telloy Simon finished with 14 points for Windsor and Jake Polski had 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.ADMIRALS DELIVER
Michael Ruttinger scored a pair of goals to lead the third-seeded Amherstburg Admirals to a 6-1 road win over the sixth-seeded PetroliaJets on Wednesday.
With the win, the Admirals now have a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven quarter-final series in the Bill Stobbs Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League. Game 5 set for Thursday in Amherstburg. Kyle Meloche and Cody Schneider each had a goal and an assist for the Admirals while Bryce McGregor and Mitchell Demelo added single goals. Max Clifford had a pair of assists for Amherstburg, which held a commanding 41-21 edge in shots.LUCHUK TRADED
Former Windsor Spitfires captain Aaron Luchuk is headed back to the NHL’s Ottawa Senators. The 22-year-old Luchuk, who scored the game-winning goal for Windsor in the 2017 Memorial Cup final, was traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs along with a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2021 for forward Max Veronneau on Wednesday. Luchuck originally signed a three-year deal with Ottawa in 2017, but was sent to Toronto in a six-player trade on July 1, 2019. Luchuk had been playing with the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers, but will report to Ottawa’s AHL farm team in Belleville. “Aaron strengthens Belleville’s depth at the centre-ice position,” Ottawa general manager Pierre Dorion said in a release. jpparker@postmedia.com twitter.com/winstarparker University/College roundup: Saints women's basketball locked into third place after weekend...THIS WEEK'S FLYERS
