Williams Syndrome (WS) is a genetic condition that is present at birth and can affect anyone. It is characterized by medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning challenges. These often occur side by side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities, and an affinity for music. RESEARCH | WILLIAMS SYNDROME ASSOCIATION Williams syndrome affects the cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal function and aspects of personality and development, therefore, scientists believe findings from research in WS may offer insights into overlapping conditions in the general population, including: Hypertension, which affects 74.5 million Americans age 20 or older. DIAGNOSING WILLIAMS SYNDROME A laboratory can use the technique known as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to confirm the diagnosis of Williams syndrome. FISH is a type of specialized chromosome analysis utilizing specially prepared elastin probes. If a patient has 2 copies of the elastin gene (one on each of their chromosomes #7), they probably do not have WS. WILLIAMS SYNDROME CLINICS Williams syndrome clinics are "specialty" clinics often located in children's hospitals. They are established to provide a place where parents can bring their children to see specialists with an excellent knowledge of Williams syndrome. HEALTHCARE GUIDELINES The American Academy of Pediatrics has published guidelines (updated in January 2020) for the medical care of children with Williams syndrome. The protocol was developed by the medical advisors of the Williams Syndrome Association and details all of the "routine" testing that should be performed for patients with Williams syndrome duringannual exams.

Common medical characteristics include cardiovascular issues, kidney anomalies, and gastrointestinal problems. These issues can range from mild to severe when evident but no issue affects everyone. ADULT LIFE | WILLIAMS SYNDROME ASSOCIATION Adult life can open new horizons and new opportunities for growth. Leaving high school does not signal an end to learning. Many young adults with Williams syndrome are entering post-secondary programs - both academic and life skills oriented, and many express a desire to AVAILABLE AID AND ASSISTANCE The diagnosis of Williams syndrome can have financial and resource implications for your family. The Williams Syndrome Association has a Medical Treatment Assistance Fund and several scholarship programs that can help you provide enrichment and post-secondary educational programming for your child, as well as attend WSA conventions andconferences.
MUSIC AND WILLIAMS SYNDROME Most individuals with Williams syndrome have an affinity to music. They are touched by music in ways not usually seen in the general population. It is quite common for those with Williams syndrome to be reduced to tears by classical music, disturbed by music played in minor chords or moved to dance and laugh by playful and "happy" music. CAMPS | WILLIAMS SYNDROME ASSOCIATION Each summer (and at a special adult camp in March!) approximately 130 youth and teens and adults with Williams syndrome enjoy camp weeks designed especially for them, at WSA sponsored camps. The camps are busy, happy, and enriching places with many activities and specializedprograms.
RISK ASSESSMENT AND ANESTHETIC Andrew J. Matisoff, Laura Olivieri, Jamie M. Schwartz & Nina Deutsch Since the first description in 1961, several case reports have documented an increased incidence of anesthesia-related cardiac arrest in patients with Williams–Beuren syndrome, commonly known as Williams syndrome (WS).
