ROYAL BRACKLA 2008 (MOSSBURN) 13 Mar 2020 | Royal Brackla MOSSBURN is a new bottler for me. They are also the owners of the Torabhaig distillery, one of the fairly recent projects on the isle of Skye. From their second batch of whiskies I bought a sample of thisROYAL BRACKLA 2008.
ROYAL
BRACKLA 10 YO 2008
(46%, MOSSBURN ‘VINTAGE CASKS’ 2018, REF. 11.0408.9) Nose: simple but fresh, with lots of lemon notes, as well as some Granny Smith apples. Young, very orchardy. Hints of baker’s yeast, lager and almonds. Mouth: sweet and fairly youngish again, but with a nice creamy texture. Hints of milk chocolate and vanilla biscuits. Barley sugars. Lemon gums and ripe apples. So close to a fruit eau-de-vie at times. Finish: medium, clean and slightly spirity. I chose this one to widen my experience with the Brackla distillery, but I’m not sure there is any typical character in this. Not bad, just way too young. Still available from Master of Malt.

LAPHROAIG 1998 // GLENBURGIE 1998 // LEDAIG 2005 (THE WHISKY EXCHANGE) 12 Mar 2020 | Glenburgie| Laphroaig
| Ledaig
THE WHISKY EXCHANGE just released three new single cask expressions, the second set under their own independent label. Three casks selected by Sukhinder Singh: 21 year-old GLENBURGIE (a sister cask of the latest Black Friday bottling), 13 year-old LEDAIG and a 21 year-old LAPHROAIG from a very active sherry cask. GLENBURGIE 21 YO 1998 (55,4%, THE WHISKY EXCHANGE 2019, BOURBON HOGSHEAD #900888, 254 BTL.) Nose: a fruit salad with yellow apples, hints of mango and plenty of pineapple on syrup. Peaches and pears. Lemon peel. Just a light grassy touch and sunflower oil. Very natural, with a crystal-cut eau-de-vie character. Mouth: slightly deeper and more tropical now, with a nice waxy side as well. Pineapple, pears and peaches. Hints of Calvados. There’s white pepper and ginger from the oak, as well as a certain metallic note. Finish: a darker style of wood, with sour apples, pepper and wax.
The resemblance with TWE’s Black Friday deal is clear, but this is slightly more oaky and eau-de-vie-like in its fruitiness. A nice and fruity Speysider. Available from The WhiskyExchange
.
Score: 87/100
LEDAIG 13 YO 2005 (57,4%, THE WHISKY EXCHANGE 2019, SHERRY BUTT #622, 622 BTL.) Nose: warm and sooty. Lots of tobacco notes, leather and brown sugar, mixed with gentle medicinal hints. Iodine, menthol, light tarry notes. Plums and milk chocolate sweetness in the background, as well as damp hay, walnuts and ash. Very wintery. Mouth: quite a medicinal style again, with menthol and eucalyptus all along. Ashy peat, charcoal and liquorice. Caraway seeds. Deep sooty notes and sweet cigar smoke. A hint of berry sourness too. Finish: very long, on tarry and mineral notes, blackberries and leather. A very warming dram, with a nice mix of dark peaty notes and sherry sweetness. Nothing dirty, and showing a nice complexity. The pick of the bunch if you want value for money. Available from The WhiskyExchange
.
Score: 88/100
Then a LAPHROAIG 1998, matured in ex-bourbon until 2010 and re-racked into a sherry hogshead for a further nine years. LAPHROAIG 21 YO 1998 (54,4%, THE WHISKY EXCHANGE 2019, OLOROSO SHERRY CASK #117, 322 BTL.) Nose: yes, such an old-style profile! It’s full of forest fruits: blackberries and blackcurrants. Plums and Corinthian raisins. All mixed with a classic Laphroaig style: deep soot and smoked earth, hints of bitumen, sea air and camphor. Lots of tobacco and leather notes. Glazed chestnuts and smoked ham. Mouth: a very intense but very balanced mix of Islay peat and sherry. Soot, tar, leather, medicinal notes. Old rancio. There’s a great sweet-and-sour fruity side though, with rasberry ganache, cherry liqueur and blackberries aplenty. Blood oranges too. Lovely. Finish: very long, elegantly becoming drier, on chocolate ganache, cherries, earthy and oaky notes. Fireworks. Intense, with heavy sherry but nice fruity notes as well. You rarely come across this style. May I predict this will end up in my ‘Best of 2020’ list? Not cheap, but highly recommended. Available from The Whisky Exchange.

It is Batch 7, one of the latest releases of HIGHLAND PARK from THAT BOUTIQUE-Y WHISKYCOMPANY.
HIGHLAND PARK 26 YO
(50,2%, THAT BOUTIQUE-Y WHISKY COMPANY 2019, BATCH #7, 598 BTL.) Nose: starts very mineral, with lots of wet chalk and grassy notes before it turns towards green banana, lime and fresh minty notes. Heather honey. Grapefruit zest, green apples, melons and some flinty notes. A little sunflower oil. Very natural, quite complex and beautifully balanced. Mouth: wonderful really, it stays on these chalky notes but it bursts into passion fruits and tangerine now (reminds me of these peated 1991 Irish malts). Subtle cedar wood and vanilla. Earthy notes underneath. Crushed peppercorns. Lime. Finish: rather long, on spicy notes and lingering fruits. This is quite an amazing Highland Park. The fresh appeal starts on the nose and gets even more intense with bright, slightly tropical fruits on the palate. Mixed with the chalky, mineral notes this is quite a gem. Available from Master of Malt.

BRUICHLADDICH BLACK ART 7.1 10 Mar 2020 | Bruichladdich In 1994 BRUICHLADDICH was closed – it remained silent until 2001 when a group of Islay landowners (Murray McDavid) reopened it. That means this BRUICHLADDICH BLACK ART 7.1 was distilled at a rather crucial point in time. Black Art has been a series of ‘dark science’, with some unique recipes of different cask types and finishes. For this release all they want to say is “only Adam knows”. That’s Adam Hannett, thehead distiller.
BRUICHLADDICH ‘BLACK ART 7.1’ 25 YO 1994 (48,4%, OB 2019,12.000 BTL.)
Nose: aromatic but also delicately layered, with hints of raspberry jam, violets, blood oranges and poached pears. Rosewater lokum. Walnuts, a little vanilla cake, whiffs of sour chutney and juicy berries. Moist tobacco leaves. There’s a slightly winey / brandy-like touch, but overall it offers lots of fun. Mouth: dark and spicy. I get blackberries, cherries and citrus, as well as honey and firmly bitter herbal tea, or even hints of vermouth or Fernet Branca. Cassia bark. Toasted oak, cinnamon, orange peel. Hints of salted lemons and liquorice roots. Finish: quite long, oaky, with leathery notes, salted nuts and a coastal edge. There’s surely some fortified wine involved here, but it’s hard to say which one. It’s quite special, with an above-average complexity and some unique flavours. Quite intruiging. Still available from TheWhisky Exchange
or Tyndrum Whisky
for instance.

GLEN KEITH 1993 (TWE EXCLUSIVE) 09 Mar 2020 | Glen Keith What a year it has been in 2019 for THE WHISKY EXCHANGE, presenting a seemingly endless stream of high-quality bottlings to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Next up: a GLEN KEITH 1993. Whisky from this distillery really shines above 20 years of age, often showing a brilliantly fruity profile. GLEN KEITH 26 YO 1993 (56,6%, SIGNATORY VINTAGE FOR THE WHISKY EXCHANGE ’20TH ANNIVERSARY’ 2019, HOGSHEAD #82779, 217 BTL.) Nose: lovely fruitiness. Unripe pineapple, lemon meringue, green apple and banana. Great balance between creamy notes and zesty elements. Hints of icing on vanilla cake, as well as fresh mint and subtle wax. Mouth: punchy, citrussy and slightly grassy. Bright orchard fruits again (juicy pear), grapefruit, hints of white pepper and cinnamon. Sauvignon whisky. Subtle maracuja. Touches of mint and aniseed. Finish: quite long, minty, with green fruits and classic bourbon oak. When it comes to bright, fruity and slowly matured Speyside whisky Glen Keith should be on your list. MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH – KNOCKRATH FOREST 06 Mar 2020 | * Ireland MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH is a series of Irish pot still whiskeys matured in traditional bourbon barrels and then finished for 2 years in NATIVE IRISH OAK. Each series uses wood from a specific forest – KNOCKRATH FOREST in this third release. Not only is the wood sourced from one forest, they also created barrels from INDIVIDUAL TREES. Each tree was shipped to Baralla (Galicia, Spain) where it was cut into staves sent to the Páez Lobato cooperage in Jerez. They were worked into barrels and given a light toasting before returning to Ireland, where they were filled with a mix of whiskeys ranging from 13 TO 26 YEARS. Giving detailed tasting notes for each of these whiskies would be ridiculous: in fact they are really close together and some would even be impossible to set apart. So I’ll write about Tree #1 and use this as a benchmark to compare the others. MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH – KNOCKRATH FOREST TREE 1 (56,6%, OB ‘VIRGIN IRISH OAK COLLECTION’ 2019) Nose: you’re mostly getting the classic virgin oak elements. Vanilla cake, some leathery notes and coconut shavings. Some peach sweetness in the background, a hint of tinned pineapple and plenty of pot still spice: pepper, nutmeg and ginger. Mouth: sweet baking spice again, with a leathery dryness and toasted oak shavings. In a second wave there are nice tropical fruits (pink grapefruit, hints of passion fruits and pineapple cubes). Light mocha in the end. Finish: long, with some woody heat and spice as it fades away. Even though I’m not a fan of virgin oak maturation, this finds a good balance and allows the tropical fruits to have their say. You can still get some of them from Celtic Whiskeyfor instance.
Score: 87/100
MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH – KNOCKRATH FOREST TREE 2 (56,6%, OB ‘VIRGIN IRISH OAK COLLECTION’ 2019) This one has a brighter kind of fruitiness, with more lime and tart gooseberries. Less vanilla but equal amounts of pot still spice. In terms of Irish fruitiness this would be my favourite. However it gets quite woody on the palate, leaving a slightly plankish impression. Hints of cinnamon and lemon zest. Score: 86/100 MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH – KNOCKRATH FOREST TREE 3 (56,3%, OB ‘VIRGIN IRISH OAK COLLECTION’ 2019) Overall more spices here, with less fruits and more pencil shavings. Some vanilla and light hints of latte, but it shows less complexity. Perhaps a little over-oaked for my taste. On the palate as well it’s a bit rough and grainy, with a slightly tannic edge. Score: 83/100 MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH – KNOCKRATH FOREST TREE 4 (56,1%, OB ‘VIRGIN IRISH OAK COLLECTION’ 2019) Close to Tree #1, with a nice mix of characteristics. There’s also a nice hint of oak polish and waxy notes that I personally adore. One of my favourites on the nose, alongside #2. On the palate as well, it finds a nice balance of sweet fruits and oak spice. Score: 86/100 MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH – KNOCKRATH FOREST TREE 5 (56,5%, OB ‘VIRGIN IRISH OAK COLLECTION’ 2019) More cake and vanilla as well as some hints of cognac. A slightly musty, earthy note too. Only minor fruits. The woodiness turned to something very herbal, almost medicinal now, with plenty of menthol and eucalyptus. Complex and interestingly different, but maybe not the most seductive one. Score: 84/100 MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH – KNOCKRATH FOREST TREE 6 (56,6%, OB ‘VIRGIN IRISH OAK COLLECTION’ 2019) This one has the loudest hints of coconut, or rather coconut cream. Add in some vanilla and pineapple and you have a Piña Colada style. Really works as it also pushes the wood to the background. Similar impression on the palate: a syrupy, quite tropical fruitiness with coconut, banana and pink grapefruit. Score: 88/100 and as it turns out, this one is still available.
MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH – KNOCKRATH FOREST TREE 7 (56,5%, OB ‘VIRGIN IRISH OAK COLLECTION’ 2019) A lime and lemon note up front, though slightly less than #2. The oak is certainly louder here as well. Sweet and fairly spicy, slightly tannic on the palate. Score: 85/100 _Afterthoughts: this is a difficult exercise. Maybe I should have given most of them the same score, that’s how close they are together. Also, in general they are very wood-forward. That is the whole point of course, and while they are very bold whiskeys, I personally prefer Midleton spirit without a virgin oak finish. And last but not least: does this work from a commercial perspective? I’ve had several questions from consumers who are afraid to buy an inferior cask… Is choice stress a welcome side-effect of thisexperiment?_

GLEN SCOTIA 2007 (TWE EXCLUSIVE) 05 Mar 2020 | Glen Scotia Some of the 20th Anniversary bottlingsfrom THE WHISKY
EXCHANGE seem to have stayed under the radar for a while, like this GLEN SCOTIA 2007 single cask. It’s surprisingly good though, andaffordable.
GLEN SCOTIA 12 YO
2007 ‘GRAND TOUR SINGLE CASK’ (54,6%, OB FOR THE WHISKY EXCHANGE 2019, FIRST-FILL BOURBON CASK #204, 209 BTL.) Nose: dry and slightly mossy at first. Bay leaf. After a while it becomes surprisingly fruity, with waxed lemons and green banana. Subtle vanilla cake. Hints of chamois leather. Wet pebblestones and petrichor. Greasy engines. Diesel fumes as well. Really complex, funky and seductive. Mouth: intense, quite medicinal, mixing herbal notes, a little oak char, paraffin and coastal notes. Salty anchovies. Hints of tar. Light grassy notes and pepper. There’s a vague sweetness and a hint of coffee underneath. Finish: long, peppery, still quite medicinal, with menthol, lime and herbal tea. Very complex and very entertaining, this is pretty great! It goes in different directions: not a beginners dram, but hats off to this characterful composition. Only from The Whisky Exchange(also samples
