JAPAN’S MOST RELAXING COFFEE CHAIN By Ken Y-N ( June 8, 2020 at 01:31) · Filed under Polls, Rankings
goo Ranking asked their readership to choose the most relaxing coffeeshop chain in Japan
.
Looking at the top three, when I lived in Kansai a friend of mine would post Facebook updates from Komeda Coffee, of which I was rather jealous as there were none near me, so when I moved to Tokyo I was keen to try, but the only one I’ve been to was a bit of ananticlimax.
Starbucks is often the very opposite of relaxing as there is often people busy talking on the phone, although I know of two in my town that are usually phone-free, and as long as I don’t think too much about the price they are quite relaxing; the French press of freshly-ground beans in particular is good. Of all the Doutors I’ve been in, only one was approaching nice, let alone relaxing. However, the cheap coffee keeps me coming back. My most relaxing is Tully’s; I’ve never been in a bad one and their plain latte is good value, but Saint Marc’s gets most of my business; there’s one the station before the office, so if I’m early in the morning, it’s just right to perk up and wind down with a hot coffee before work. LIFESTYLE CHANGES UNDER COVID-19 By Ken Y-N ( June 6, 2020 at 01:48) · Filed under Business, Lifestyle

The company Link and Communication, who make an AI health advisor mobile app called Calomama,
surveyed their users about mental and physical health changes since the State of Emergency was declared.
I’m working from home, and my walking distance has been reduced from an average of 10,000 steps to about 500 or so. However, it’s been great for my stress levels, even though I find myself doing much more overtime than I did in the office. Due to the wonders of modern technology, I can log into my beefy work PC and do 95% of what I needto do.
Even better, the company has extended work at home for the forseeable future; the target is less than 50% per team commuting, but I think our team is under 10% right now. Here’s a random Japan home office that is much more exiting thanmine:

ITALIAN AND GYOZA MOST WANTED NEARBY CHAINS By Ken Y-N ( June 1, 2020 at 01:46) · Filed under Polls, Rankings
Japan has many cheap (and not so cheap) chain restaurants and cafes but I’m sure everyone has a favourite they wish were closer. This was the question goo Ranking asked, which chain restaurant do people most wish would open a new branch nearby them.
I’d vote for Tully’s Coffee (random photo from a snack there attached); I find them very pleasant and with very drinkable coffee and cheap pasta lunches. Unfortunately the nearest one (four train stops away) suddenly closed just before the lockdown. Even though I live beside an express stop train station, all we have is the greasy Chinese spoon Bamiyan and a privately-owned traditional style coffee shop; a nice Tully’s or similar would improve the neighbourhood no end! This large-scale survey from NHK’s Broadcast Culture Research Centre looked at Japan and America,
with particular focus on the current Trump regime. This will be posted over three nights in chunks of around 9 questions each. The final part of this survey shows further how Japan perceives that America has lost its way, yet Japan still finds the country is it’sbest friend.
Interestingly, despite Japan’s Prime Minister being excessively friendly to Trump, the people rate Obama as the greatest post-warpresident.

This large-scale survey from NHK’s Broadcast Culture Research Centre looked at Japan and America,
with particular focus on the current Trump regime. This will be posted over three nights in chunks of around 9 questions each. Although the Japanese press on the whole lauded Trump’s overtures to North Korea and made a big thing of the relatives of the Japanese hostages talking to Trump and getting a nice positive soundbite out of it, it was obvious to me that Trump was spouting any old nonsense in an effort to get his ratings. Satisfyingly, the Japanese public seems generally to share similar opinions. Read the rest of this entry »READ

This large-scale survey from NHK’s Broadcast Culture Research Centre looked at Japan and America,
with particular focus on the current Trump regime. This will be posted over three nights in chunks of around 9 questions each. I’m slightly surprised at the relatively positive view of many aspects of Trump’s policies, of not at their effects on Japan, but perhaps that is more a reflection of my media consumption. Japanese broadcast media mainly treats him as a normal president; only his more massive gaffes make headlines here. Read the rest of this entry »READ

This survey is ancient in terms of the progression of COVID-19, but there’s still interesting figures in this survey from @nifty conducted at the end of March into COVID-19. This survey
was conducted before the Olympics were postponed and the state ofemergency declared.
So far I’d put myself in the not really worried category; it is of course a serious disease and lockdowns are a justified response, but at the moment in Japan things seem reasonably under control and the collapse of the medical system seems to have been largely avoided, although in-hospital infections are a bit too widespread for myliking.
About the only thing I’ve avoided is going to the ENT clinic for my hayfever this season as I didn’t fancy sitting in a packed waiting room breathing potentially virus-laden air, so luckily first I had a bottle of nose spray left over from last year, and second an OTC version of the identical medicine was approved this year, so I could just visit my much quieter local chemist to replenish my supply. BRANDS JAPANESE WERE SUPRISED TO FIND WERE JAPANESE By Ken Y-N ( May 1, 2020 at 02:12) · Filed under Polls, Rankings
I’m back, and with some free time let’s try a translation I started last year; brands that the Japanese were surprised to learn were actually Japan-born.
Samantha Thavasa television advertisements have an extremely American feel with supermodels frolicing around New York in fancy frocks, so I too was surprised to find they were actually Japanese. However, here is some proof of their Japaneseness. Wilkinson was another surprise; I thought they were just a made under licence foreign brand, but it was actually founded in Kobe by a Britonnamed Wilkinson
